Ari woke with a gun aimed at his heart.

He blinked at Ethan.

“Why is everyone looking at me?”

“You spoke in Jonas Morrow’s voice,” Rachel said.

Ari frowned.

“I don’t remember.”

The vehicle moved through the rain toward the capital. Saint Oran was behind them, buried beneath its own ruins.

Rachel held the witness key between both hands.

Three signals moved across its display.

The first fracture came before sunrise.Rachel was still at the console when the witness network began to break apart. Not all at once. Not cleanly. One memory at a time.A woman in the eastern district woke screaming because she remembered a daughter she had buried twenty years ago. A man in the transit tunnels forgot the name of the person sleeping beside him. In the lower city, continuity subjects who had refused to register began losing pieces of themselves in real time. The screen filled with alerts.> **SUBJECT 12 — MEMORY FRACTURE** > **SUBJECT 31 — MEMORY FRACTURE** > **SUBJECT 44 — MEMORY FRACTURE**Rachel’s hands moved across the console.“I separated the purge command,” she said. “But Orin left something behind.”Ethan stood beside her. “What?”“A delay.”Subject 00’s presence moved through the system, slower now.“The command is still active,”

  • Chapter 84 — The Second Witness

The new message appeared before dawn.Rachel saw it first. The witness console had been quiet for hours, its blue light resting against the wall while the city beyond the safehouse tried to decide what it believed. Then the display changed.> **CONTINUITY OVERSIGHT RESTORED** > **ALL SUBJECTS MUST REGISTER**Ethan read it twice.“That’s not from the old Council.”“No,” Rachel said. “It’s from the network.”Elara looked up from the chair near the window. “Someone used the authentication system.”Subject 00’s presence moved through the console, not as a voice but as a correction. The map shifted. A signal appeared beneath the identity records, buried so deeply that Rachel had missed it.“It’s human,” she said.Ethan looked at the signal. “Who?”Elara’s face tightened.“Someone we know.”The room went still.Ari sat near the window, pale but awake. “I can hear it.”Ethan looked at him. “What do you hear?”Ari’s hands closed around the blanket. “A voice. It keeps saying the same thing.”

  • Chapter 83 — The Quiet Between

The safehouse was quieter after Subject 00 entered the network. Not empty. Not peaceful. But quieter. The witness console glowed across the room, cycling through identity records in slow, steady pulses. Rachel sat beside it, one hand resting against the device as though she could feel every signal moving through it.Ethan stood at the window.Below, the city had gone quiet. The public screens still flickered between contradictory broadcasts, but the noise had changed. The Council was no longer shouting. It was listening.Behind him, Subject 00’s presence moved through the network like a second heartbeat. It did not speak often. When it did, it corrected memories rather than giving commands.Rachel looked up from the console. “It’s trying to help.”Ethan watched the display. “You’re sure?”“No.”Elara sat near the far wall, her hands folded in her lap. “That’s not good enough.”

  • Chapter 82 — Subject Zero

The witness key woke on its own.Rachel was asleep beside the console when the screen lit the room in pale blue. She sat up fast, one hand already reaching for the device. The display showed a single line.> **CONTINUITY SUBJECT 00 — UNKNOWN** > **HOST STATUS: ACTIVE**Ethan was awake before she said his name.He crossed the room and looked over her shoulder. The signal moved through the network in slow, deliberate pulses. It did not behave like Darius. It did not behave like Vale. It moved as though it were searching.“For what?” Ethan asked.Rachel watched the signal settle. Then the display changed.> **SUBJECT A-01 — ETHAN GRAVES**His chest tightened.“It’s looking for me.”Elara appeared in the doorway, wrapped in a blanket. “That shouldn’t be possible.”“It is,” Rachel said. “The signal is inside the network.”Ilyra’s voice came from the chair ne
