"Five hundred," Sato said, lowering the bamboo stick. "Lunch."

Ren dropped his hands, his shoulders throbbing like two blocks of solid lead. His wraps were dark with sweat, and his breathing came in heavy, ragged hitches.

He wiped his face with the back of his forearm and was just about to head toward the doorway when a sharp, bright blue screen popped up right in front of his eyes.

  • Suspicions

Ren chewed his rice quickly, his arms still aching from that hundred-clone streak in the void.'I wonder if I the system made that penalty easy because it was my first penalty? Jeez! I really do hope that I won't miss any sort of Sparring Void training again, especially now that I've already unlocked level three opponents.'Ren thought to himself.Across the low table, Sato ate like a robot. His back was straight as a board, taking quite small bites. He hadn't brought up the ten-minute blackout since they left the dojo, but the silence between them was heavy.Sato set his chopsticks down flat against the wood. He didn't look up immediately, but his voice came out sharp and quiet."What were you doing back in the corner?"Ren paused, his chopsticks hovering over his bowl. "What do you mean?""Your breathing stopped," Sato said, turning his head to look directly at Ren. His dark eyes were cold and completely unreadable. "You sat there for ten minutes straight without changing your pos

  • One-Two-Three!

Sato led Ren right back into the drafty dojo ten minutes after breakfast, the double doors clicking shut behind them to block out the morning sun."Yesterday was standing and stepping," Sato said, picking up his bamboo stick from the corner rack. "Today is hitting without opening your defense."Ren slipped into his stance—feet set shoulder-width apart, back heel slightly raised, right hand glued to his cheek. His legs were still stiff from the ten-kilometer morning run, but the system's stamina recovery had taken the edge off the deep muscle soreness."Show me the one-two," Sato ordered. "Jab, straight right, back to guard."Ren stepped forward on his left foot, snapped out his jab, and immediately followed with a straight right punch, pivoting his back hip to drive his weight forward.SMACK!"Hey—"Sato’s bamboo stick tapped Ren’s exposed left jaw before the right punch even landed fully."You dropped your left hand when you threw the right," Sato said coldly. "Your face was wide op

  • Workouts.

At 4:55 AM, the wooden sliding door of the guest room snapped open.Sato didn't shout or kick the futon. He simply stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the cold grey mist of the early morning, holding two thick cotton running wraps."Up," Sato said, his voice completely flat. "Five minutes."Ren groaned, his eyes burning from sleep as he pulled himself up. Every muscle in his legs felt like stiff cardboard from yesterday's six-hour stance drill, but the moment his feet touched the cool floorboards, a familiar blue screen flickered in his vision.DING![DAILY WARM-UP QUEST: MORNING ROADWORK]Target: Estate Mountain TrailTime Limit: 2 HoursObjectives: * Distance Run: 0 / 10.0 Km[QUEST REWARD: Stamina Restoration][FAILURE PENALTY: Physical Fatigue Doubled for 24 Hours]Ren blinked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. • The Basics

Ten minutes after the last bowl of rice was cleared, Sato led Ren down a long, drafty hallway that ended at a pair of heavy wooden sliding doors. He pushed them open, revealing a massive, empty dojo. The floor was made of polished cedar boards that gleamed under the high windows, and the air smelled heavily of old wood, straw, and sweat.... Yup, mainly sweat.Sato stepped onto the floor, barefoot, and turned around to face Ren."Take off your shoes," Sato said. "Stand in the middle."Ren unlaced his sneakers, kicked them to the side of the doorway, and walked out onto the smooth timber."Now," Sato said, folding his arms behind his back. "Show me your fight stance."Ren took a breath, stepped his left foot forward, bent his knees slightly, and raised his wrapped hands up to cover his cheekbones, just like he had been doing in his guest room. He felt solid, but the moment he settled into it, Sato walked over.Without saying a word, Sato kicked the inside of Ren’s back ankle.Ren’s foot

  • Getting Ready For Training

Ren dropped his hands to the floorboards, keeping his back straight. The blue system screen floated right at the edge of his vision, counting every rep."Just some push ups and sit ups and shadow boxing, I'm already someone who is fit, enough to complete those... I guess?"One.He kept a steady continuous pushing off the wood without rushing it.Two. Three. Four...By thirty, his arms started trembling, the leftover ache from Saname’s strike reminding him how weak his real-world body actually was. "okay, I'm not fit! I take back my words, I'm not fit at all!" He gritted his teeth and pushed through the burn.Forty-nine. Fifty.Ren let out a long exhaled of breath, "Okay, that was torture!"*[Push-ups: 50 / 50 (5 XP)]"Okay, I'm making progress, just a little more and I might be done."He rolled straight onto his back, planted his feet, and started the sit-ups. Fifty reps later, his stomach felt like it was on fire, but he didn't sit around resting. He scrambled up, wiped the sweat
