Chapter 2: The Power of Extraction

The crimson interface hummed right before Kai's eyes, glowing red against the purple darkness of the library floor. The teeth of the mutated beast were buried deep in his left shoulder, ripping his skin and turning his vision blurry with burning pain.

"Yes!" Kai screamed in his heart. "Extract! Extract it all!"

The moment he spoke the command, a warm, powerful shockwave exploded inside his body.

Black mist surged out of the dead beast's open mouth and flooded straight into Kai's chest. The terrible tearing pain in his shoulder disappeared in a single second. His open flesh knit back together, his broken skin closed tightly, and his tired muscles filled with raw, terrifying force.

A sharp bell rang inside his head as red text flashed across his eyes.

[Extraction Successful!] [Target: Mutated Hound (Tier 1)] [Rewards: +5 Strength, +3 Agility] [New Skill Acquired: Corpse Blade (F-Rank)]

Kai felt a surge of energy rushing through his veins. It felt like a cold, heavy power burning through his blood, making his sight and hearing ten times sharper than before. He could hear every heavy purple raindrop hitting the roof. He could see every speck of dust floating in the dark air.

The heavy beast lying on top of him felt light now, like a sack of dry straw.

Kai reached up, grabbed the monster's thick neck with one hand, and shoved it off his body. He stood up in one smooth movement, stepping right over the dead creature.

Gritting his teeth, he raised his right hand. A cold black mist swirled around his fingers, forming a sharp aura that wrapped around the broken iron pipe he held. This was his new Corpse Blade skill.

The remaining three mutated beasts in the corridor growled, their red eyes flashing with wild hunger. They did not understand how their prey had suddenly healed, but they lunged forward together, snapping their jaws toward his neck.

Kai did not take a single step back. He did not feel fear anymore.

He swung his iron pipe with his boosted strength. The dark energy wrapped around the pipe sliced through the air with a loud whistle.

BANG!

The iron pipe slammed straight through the head of the first beast, crushing its skull like a soft melon. Black blood sprayed across the floor. Without stopping, Kai spun around and drove the pointed edge of his pipe into the neck of the second beast, ripping its head completely off its shoulders.

[Target Killed! Extracting Attributes: +4 Strength, +2 Agility.] [Target Killed! Extracting Attributes: +5 Stamina, +1 Agility.]

The third beast stopped running. It whined like a beaten dog, tucking its tail between its back legs as it backed away from Kai.

"Now you are scared?" Kai said, his voice cold and flat.

He moved forward like a lightning bolt, his speed twice as fast as before. With one downward strike of his pipe, he split the third beast in half from its head down to its chest.

[Target Killed! Extracting Attributes: +4 Strength, +3 Stamina.]

Silence fell over the main corridor.

Kai stood in the middle of the blood and broken bodies, breathing steadily. He looked down at his hands, feeling the massive power pulsing under his skin. The old world of money, status, and rich bullies was completely gone. In this new world, strength was the only thing that mattered.

Brandon had used his father's money to walk all over him. Sarah had taken his hard work and thrown it into the dirt.

Kai looked up at the quiet balcony where Sarah and Brandon had run away. A cold, dark smile touched his face.

"You left me to be eaten," Kai whispered into the dark room. "You locked the gate so you could live while I died. But I did not die. When I come up those stairs, I will make sure you drop to your knees and beg for mercy."

He wiped the black blood off his face and turned around to look at the ground floor of the library.

The main entrance was ruined, but the inner doors to the private rooms were still closed. If he wanted to build a safe shelter and get stronger, he needed to clear out every single beast hiding on this floor.

Kai walked through the wide hallway, his eyes sharp. He kicked open the door to the computer lab. Two mutated zombies turned around, their white eyes staring at him.

Before they could even roar, Kai moved across the room. His upgraded agility made him fast like a shadow. He swung his pipe left and right, cutting both zombies down in less than two seconds.

[Target Killed! Extracting: +2 Strength.] [Target Killed! Extracting: +3 Stamina.]

Room by room, Kai hunted through the ground floor. He cleared the textbook section, the study cubicles, and the staff offices. Every beast he killed gave him more stats, making his body harder and faster. His iron pipe became covered in hard black blood, growing sharper under his Corpse Blade skill.

By the time he reached the central study hall, he had cleared out more than fifteen beasts. He felt no tiredness at all. The power from his system kept his chest clear and his muscles strong.

In the middle of the large study hall, a giant mutated hound lay on top of a pile of wooden tables. It was twice the size of the others, with black iron spikes growing out of its back. It was an Elite Mutated Hound.

The beast opened its mouth and roared, charging at Kai like a runaway bull.

Kai stood his ground until the beast was just two feet away. He ducked under its sharp claws, slid across the floor, and drove his black-wrapped pipe upward straight through the monster's soft belly.

The elite beast crashed onto the ground, thrashing violently before going completely still.

A small chest with glowing silver handles appeared right beside the dead monster. Kai walked over, pressing his hand against the chest to claim his loot.

While looting a chest dropped by an Elite Mutated Hound, Kai hears desperate banging on the heavy oak doors of the library study hall.
