Chapter 002

"Where is the beast?"

Herald's harsh voice rose up with himself from the floor as he quickly gathered the broken fragments of his memories ready for a fight.

He could still feel the thick trial of fear, the dark stare of the God Tier Beast that paralyzed him even without doing nothing.

Even though he could no longer feel the aura of the beast, the fear that it brought still lingered and he could only think for his group with the fact that he had the highest grade combat skill among them and the only one with an immortal core.

But when he looked around, the squad were just scrambling off their feet, some barely standing, and some members supporting the others.

And the beast, it laid there dead, its core coiled out like nothing.

But just a little pick at it was enough to make a person's heart shift out of place.

And something wasn't right.

His feet stopped as his eyes glazed over the beast.

The kill that ended the life of this terrific beast, it was clean, and almost impossible.

Over the years going for rides right from a tender age, Harold knew exactly what a beast kill should look like.

Multiple slashes and woods, splattering blood everywhere. But whoever made this kill, it was more like they were slicing through butter.

He looked around, searching for an explanation.

The only one that seems not to be affected by this was their friend and employer, the one that they were supposed to protect, Mia.

Everyone gathered around Mia, waiting for an explanation and the more she thought about it, the more her frown deepened.

"Mia, how did you kill the beast?" They were still stunned at the miracle before them.

"Did you receive outside help? Is that why the beast doesn't have a core?" Multiple questions flung at her from every direction all at once.

"I wish that was the case!" She snorted.

"The beast ambushed us from the eastern flank," she replied, drawing a deep breath. "It broke through our formation before we could set up properly."

"And the finishing blow?" Herald's eyes didn't move from the wound.

Mia's jaw tightened. She could feel the stares of the others already burning into her back.

"A slum kid," she forced the words out. "Prideful little rat. He wandered into the zone and struck it while the beast was already dying."

"But he claimed to have done it all by himself and would not share the essence with us!" She explained with a hint of vermin in her tone.

"A slum rat took down an advanced armored beast? That's rich."

"I definitely didn't believe him when he made such a claim!" Mia hissed out her lungs.

"The beast must have bled out from your fight," another quickly added. "The kid probably just swung a stick at a corpse and got lucky."

"Yeah," someone else agreed. "Those slum vultures always show up when the real work is done. It's what they do."

A few of them chuckled. Even some of Mia's own squad looked relieved that someone had given them an easy explanation.

Mia nodded along. "Exactly. He just got lucky with a dying monster. Nothing more."

Herald crouched beside the beast. His fingers hovered over the cut without touching it.

An advanced armored beast, even a dying one, still had shell protection that could stop most channeler weapons. His own squad would need coordinated strikes to get through this cleanly.

This wasn't just a quick hit, it was a perfect kill with a killing intent. Like someone who knew exactly where to hit.

'A dying beast doesn't soften its armor.' He kept the thought buried.

A large lump went down his spine. Whether it was the slum kid or not, whoever killed this was the monster and not the beast itself and it would be a beast if they avoided any troubles with them.

"We should be glad we are alive, in the meantime, we will cook up a story to tell the board of channelers for now, and clean up this mess..." Herald ended quickly and everyone nodded.

Mia's blooded over as she watched them carry off her injured squad members.

She hadn't risked her life and brought her elite team into this death zone for routine monster hunting. She had come for that core. That specific advanced core.

Prince Edward was coming to the arcane academy in three days and a welcome party was going to be hosted for him.

That core was supposed to be her ticket to grab his attention and make him hers.

Her way to stand out from the crowd of desperate nobles throwing themselves at the crown prince's feet.

Now some sickly nobody had walked away with her future tucked under his arm.

'If I ever see that ragged rat again,' she swore silently, 'I will personally tear him apart with my bare hands.'

Riley's feet were still making that annoying cracking sound with every step.

He was taking the northern route back, the long way that barely anyone used.

This his first time in the city and he never realized his first meeting was going to be with an ungrateful brat.

"But she's kinda quiet!" He smiled to himself.

He was doing his mental calculations for the third time, trying to figure out how much he could get from the core in his bag and possible ways to absorb most of its essence, when the ground started shaking.

Horses, lined in rows strutted with dignity towards him, but what stood out most were the men on them.

Their robes lined with gold linens and their pulsing aura all spelled raw dignity.

However, the old un-assuming man at their center caught Riley's attention as he instantly sensed his God Tier essence core.

Riley's face hardened instantly.

The man stopped right before him and helped the old man off from his horse and their eyes interlocked.

His aura was stronger than before and only his stance spelled wealth and power.

“I don't believe I know you!” Riley's stance remained glued to the floor as he surveyed the old man deeply.

"I'm sorry if I startled you sir!" The man instantly dropped to his feet, his face woven deeply with a mixture of fear and reverence that carved confusion into the faces of the other men.

Satisfied that his Mum was safe, he returned his gaze to the men in front of him, looking for a way to escape from them. “Please, I beg you, lady. Just come out!” Suddenly, he felt balls of sweat running down his body at different parts, as he stood at a spot with nowhere to run to, trying so hard to catch his breath which was moving farther and farther away. With nothing but a little borrowed courage left inside him, he discarded every form of thought in his mind, and ran to his left, in an attempt to get past the guard there, but he found himself on the floor, as the guard put his leg on the way, causing him to trip on it. Riley grunted loudly, as he hit the ground with his chaste, causing him to feel so much pain. He tried to get up almost immediately to escape from the men, but he felt a tight grip on his neck as soon as he tried to get up. “Come here, boy! Enough of the games, it’s all over.” “No! Let me go! We can talk about this.” Riley said loudly, but that wasn’t enough

CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR“Get into the van, Mum!” Riley said to his mother, who was reluctant to move, as she stood at a spot, frightened by the scary sight of the two men in black suits who panted with so much vexation.“Are you sure, Riley ? They look really scary, I don’t want you to get hurt.”“Just go Mum, I will be fine.”Mrs. Ederson took one last look at her son, and then she moved into the Van and sat close to Sammy who was lying still in a corner.Certain that his mother was safe, Riley moved backward, and then he closed the barn doors without looking, while his eyes carefully looked at the men in front of him, as they approached with full force.“Come with us and your family can go!” Said of the two men who was standing on the right, while the other panted frantically, trying to catch his breath, as it was evident that they had been running in an attempt to catch up with Dace after he had locked them in.“Look, just let us go, I don’t want any trouble,” Riley said with a soft

CHAPTER FORTY-THREE“Don’t worry about them, Mum. But we have to move faster so that they don't get up and come after us.”Riley ’s mother looked so confused even though she didn’t say it, but the look on her face explained the way she felt. She reluctantly agreed to her son’s words, and increased the speed of her steps, trying so hard to stop her heart from beating fast, and the tension in her body from taking full control. They got close to the men on the floor who were still grunting in pain, and Riley wheeled the stretcher carefully across them, making sure that he avoided them entirely.“Stop right there!” The last man he has dealt with said with a shaky voice, as he placed his hand on the wall, and balanced his weight on it, straining to get up.Seeing that he was attempting to get up, Riley pushed faster and with more force, making sure that he avoided the rest of the men who were on the floor ahead of them.Eventually, they got past the other two men, and Riley continued to

CHAPTER FORTY-TWOAlmost at the same time, they distanced themselves from each other and moved toward the two corners of the hallway, making it difficult for him to know which one of them he was going to focus on.He looked to his left, and then to his right, unable to make a choice between the two angry-looking men who didn't seem like they were going to give up.“Alright, guys. This doesn’t have to get violent, I just want to get to my family.” He said with a soft tone, but his hopes were dashed when the man standing by his right rushed at him, almost grabbing him by his neck, if he wasn’t fast enough to elude his grip.“That was close!”He kicked the man impulsively on his belle, causing him to grunt in severe pain, as he staggered and fell to the ground.Seeing his partner on the floor, the other man growled angrily and attempted to take Riley unaware by throwing a punch at him, but he missed by an inch, as Riley was fast enough to dodge his knuckles. Not willing to give up, the

CHAPTER FORTY-ONEGetting out of the elevator as soon as the elevator chimed, he looked to his right, and then to his left, in an attempt to make sure that no one was along the hallway.Seeing that the coast was clear, he sighed heavily, and then he moved to the end of the hallway, just like the Scientist had instructed.“Hey, you! Stop right there!” The hoarse voice thundered from behind him, causing him to gasp and turn at the same time to see a man in a black suit with broad shoulders and braided hair. He was approaching with heavy and fast footsteps, which later turned to running in a few seconds.“Shit!”Riley gasped at the man’s speed, and then he increased his speed, moving in a flash with the help of the superpowers the system granted him.“There he is! Over there!”“Oh no,” Riley said softly, and his eyes widened as soon as he saw the two men in similar suits in front of him, running toward him, just like the man behind him, with only the intention of capturing him.Realizing

CHAPTER FORTY“Then you better start talking!”Riley moved the taser toward his head, eager to discharge enough electrical shocks into him in case he failed to speak. The scientist looked at the taser, and his heart skipped more beats, even though he seemed to have proven stubborn at first, and was willing to hold onto his decision.“Wait! Wait! I will speak.” He said with a shaky voice, but that wasn’t enough to make Riley withdraw the taser, which was a few inches away from Seth’s neck.“Go on, you have ten seconds. Nine!…Eight!”“They are held up in a room here in the lab!”“Where? Where is the room? How do I locate it?”Seth whimpered, and then he took another look at the taser, and his breath almost left him.“Five!”“They are up! By the end of the hall, the last room by the left!”“Are you sure?”“Yes! I am not lying, they are there!”Riley looked at him for a few seconds, while he continued to shake amidst the tension that was rising in his body.“Well, I hope you are telling t
