Blood in the Water

Ethan Cross stood still in the center of the small warehouse office, his heart pounding like a war drum. His fingers were clenched into fists, his knuckles white. Around him, the air was thick with tension.

Across the desk sat Darius Kim, a ruthless local businessman known for swallowing up small competitors like candy. Bald, built like a pit bull, and with eyes sharp as razors, Darius grinned as if Ethan were already dead.

“I heard about your little delivery app,” Darius said, tapping his fingers against the desk. “Smart. Too smart for someone who used to run errands on a scooter.”

Ethan didn’t flinch. “I’m not here for your approval.”

“No, but you are here in my city. You’re setting up a company without kissing the right rings. That’s a problem.”

Ethan smirked. “The city belongs to no one. And I don’t kiss rings. I break them.”

A thick silence dropped between them like a slab of concrete. Darius leaned back, chuckling darkly.

“You’ve got a mouth on you. I like that. But this isn’t about pride, boy. It’s about power. I’m giving you one chance to sell me your company. I’ll give you five hundred grand and let you walk.”

“Five hundred thousand?” Ethan repeated, then leaned forward. “For something that’ll be worth millions next quarter? I think I’ll pass.”

The goons at Darius’s side cracked their knuckles.

Ethan turned to leave.

“Be careful, Cross,” Darius called after him. “There’s blood in the water. And I smell yours.”

Ethan jumped into his car and drove through the city with the words echoing in his head. Survive? Was this going to be physical? Financial? Both?

As if on cue, his phone buzzed.

Unknown Number:

"You made a mistake rejecting Darius. You won’t make it past tonight."

He didn’t respond.

Instead, Ethan called his only reliable ally in this mess: Miles, the coding genius who helped him build the backend of his delivery app.

“Miles. We’re under attack. Expect hacking, sabotage—everything.”

“Already saw someone trying to breach our firewall,” Miles said. “I blocked it. Barely.”

“Send everything to an offline backup. And encrypt all driver info. No one gets to them.”

“You got it.”

Ethan hung up and took a deep breath. He couldn’t let this be the end. Not after how far he’d come.

Hours Later – Midnight

Ethan stood outside one of his newly rented delivery hubs on the outskirts of the city. It was supposed to be a quiet night—no deliveries scheduled, just inventory checks.

But the silence didn’t feel right.

He entered the building cautiously, flicking on the lights.

Nothing.

Then—

CRASH!

A window shattered. Three masked men burst in, one wielding a bat, the others with pipes.

“Darius sends his regards,” one growled.

Ethan didn’t wait.

He grabbed the broom handle leaning by the wall and swung fast, cracking the nearest guy in the gut. The man doubled over with a wheeze.

Another charged. Ethan ducked, adrenaline flooding his system.

He ducked, spun, and swept the legs of the second attacker. The third swung his bat wildly—Ethan blocked it with the handle, then drove his fist into the man’s throat.

Three bodies groaned on the floor.

Ethan stood over them, chest heaving.

“You picked the wrong nobody to mess with.”
