"Pests!" The king lifted the demon commander's head for the demon foot soldiers to see. "Here is your leader!"
After the commander had been killed, the dome began to fade away and the light from the sun that had been previously obstructed by the dome shone on the king and his yellow aura making him resemble an angel of light on a rescue mission. Demons were not very emotional creatures, but the sight of their "strong" commander's head sent a ripple of fear through them. However, before they could react, the king tossed the head at them. The head was still sailing through the air when the king murdered every demon foot soldier standing in the town square with blinding speed. Suddenly, everyone burst into applause and cheers. Even the chief guard sighed deeply in relief. Alex was stunned. Even though he lived in a world of magic, it was quite difficult to witness such battles in action because the guilds and the Magic Association in conjunction with the Royal Body of Magi (ROBOM) made sure that any danger that required the use of magic to be solved was always kept far away from the villagers. However, something must have gone terribly wrong today for the demons to have managed to infiltrate the Awakening. Alex looked at the king again. There were splotches of blood all over his face and armour (apparently not his blood). It was so hard to believe that a man with a face as soft and harmless as his had carried out such carnage. Before this incident, people had always criticised the king because they had never seen him in action. They always believed that he was weak and was only the king because he was privileged enough to be born into a royal family. However, after this display of raw magic power, Alex wasn't sure that anyone would tolerate that line of thought again. The applause and cheers continued. Alex couldn't help but feel a great deal of emotion for the man. If the king had not stood up to the occasion, then the demons would most likely have murdered all of them. In a way, they all owed their lives to the king. As the applause died out, two men dressed in black arrived grandly, with one of them manipulating the darkness behind him while the other just walked calmly without displaying any magic but still managed to exude the same amount of terror as his acquaintance. "Is the party over?" The one with black magic asked with a pompous grin on his face, The king turned towards him, and a small smile appeared on his small face, "Ken, ever the latecomer." "I'm not to be blamed," Ken raised his hands in submission, "I thought the ceremony began way later." "Well, it's over already. You missed the fun part." "Ah, too bad," Ken said and kicked one of the corpses of the demon foot soldiers. He didn't look at the corpse for longer than a second before looking up and asking, "Any queers this year? Or will my losing streak continue for the 7th time?" "Actually..." The King's smile deepened and tilted his head in the direction of the newly awakened children, "You hit the jackpot this year. There are 2 of them." Ken's eyes widened ever so slightly like he had just won the lottery, then he licked his lips and said, "Well, I'll be damned." This exchange between Ken and the king left a lot of people confused. The villagers were just realising that they didn't know anything about their dear king. Who knew that the king and the captain of the Blakk guild were on casual speaking terms? Alex didn't know who Ken was. He didn't even know what the Blakk guild was. While in the orphanage, there were very limited sources of information on things that went on in the outside world. However, he was intrigued by the darkness that the man controlled. Some people went their entire lives without ever meeting a Black magic ability user, but today alone, he had seen two of them. Alex was still so mesmerised by the Black magic that he did not notice when Ken stood before him. It was only when the man and his darkness obstructed the light on his face that Ken realised that he was in front of him. "What is the colour of your affinity?" Ken asked, "Grey," Alex replied simply, "Well, welcome to the Blakk Guild," Ken chucked his hand forward for a handshake, "No..." Alex replied and used his smaller hand to bring Ken's hand back down. "I'm sorry, but can I think about it first?" Ken shrugged. "Take your time, kid, whenever you decide, you know where to find us." After that, he walked away with the other man beside him, probably to look for the other "queer." However, before the 2nd man walked away, he looked at Alex with what looked like pity. It was almost as if he was trying to say. 'We've all been there before...' There was something strange about this interaction to Alex. Ken and his acquaintance both behaved like they were 100% sure that Alex would choose them. This made Alex sort of pissed and he silently agreed within himself that if he managed to see another guild that would impress him, then he would choose them rather than those two haughty fellows. Hours later, Alex had not seen a single guild willing to take him. Initially, none of the guild representatives were walking up to him, unlike his mates. He decided to take matters into his own hands and started meeting the guild representatives himself only for him to get slapped in the face with the words; "I'm sorry, but your affinity does not fit into our guild's plans." It was almost as if someone who awakened a grey affinity was as useless as a non-awakened. After so many hours of constant disappointment, Alex understood why Ken acted that way towards him. The Blakk Guild was the only guild that would take him under their wing. After coming to this realisation, he began to ask around for the Blakk Guild headquarters.

To meet the next guild member, Ken had to take Alex into the forest. They met Amelia and the other guild member, Trent, patrolling the forests. There was instant tension in the air when Amelia caught sight of Alex."What's he doing here?" Amelia asked Ken, "Does he want to destroy the forest again?""Please calm down Amelia," Ken said, "he's just a newly awakened, he doesn't have control of his powers. I mean, you of all people should know how that feels."Ken's last statement made Amelia shut up, even though she still looked unhappy about the previous day's drama."The forest's efficiency is not yet up to 100%. It will take a few more days before that happens. Till then, we have to be on high alert so I'm going to continue patrolling." Amelia said hurriedly and walked off,"Why's she so worked up about the whole thing?" Alex asked, "The forest is okay now. She doesn't have to antagonise me anymore.""Well, Amelia's affinity is Green. She has a very deep love for nature and in additio

"Huh?" Alex retorted and spun around to see a scrawny young guy smiling suspiciously at him."I meant the view. It's hard, right?" The guy asked again and nudged his chin in the direction of the view before them where the beautiful forest and the beautiful lady all stood.Alex narrowed his eyes in suspicion. "I'm not sure I know what you're talking about...""Ahhh, you're so funny," the guy said and hooked his arm around Alex's neck like an old-time friend. "I'm Rex. What's your name?""Alex.""Alex, I have a feeling we'll get along quite well, so what's your affinity?"Before Alex could reply, Ken interrupted them. "Rex, leave the kid alone. He's still a minor, I don't want you feeding his mind with your nonsense.""Aww..." Rex laughed and ran off, "See you later, Alex."Alex and Ken watched Rex run off in silence. "I like him." Alex chipped."Meh, he's okay." Ken shrugged then turned to Alex, "How do you feel this morning?""I feel great, honestly." Alex shrugged in response, "Th
8 One Interesting Kid
The person who slammed the door open was a young girl, who looked not older than 21 years. She also had green hair and wore green-rimmed spectacles that made her look like a nerd. However, she was angry and looked like she was ready to murder someone."Master Ken!!" She yelled angrily, "Someone burnt down the entire forest outside!! Who did that? I will kill that person!!"Alex froze at the words that came out of her mouth. He hoped that Ken wouldn't say anything to implicate him, he didn't want any smoke with this girl. Obviously, she was an ability user. She could kill him in a breath.Master Ken smiled broadly and asked, "Amelia! Have you met the latest addition to our guild?... What's your name kiddo?""Alex" "Right. Amelia, this is Alex, he's the newest member of our guild. Please treat him well."Amelia ignored the last comment and went straight to Alex. Even as a malnourished 15-year-old, Alex was still a bit tall for his age so when Amelia stood before him, she had to arch h
7 Blakk Guild HQ
"Who the hell builds a guild HQ in the middle of nowhere?" Alex gritted his teeth as he waded through the thick Vegetation of the village forest where everyone told him that the Blakk Guild had built their HQ. "This is mental..."It was nighttime, and Alex was barely managing to move through the bushes without tripping or running into something that would end his life. If he had known that the guild building was so far away, then he would've slept in the village before embarking on the journey the next day, but he hadn't known so here he was, stumbling through the darkness in search of a building that he did not even know what it looked like. Now that he had awakened, Alex had no reason to ever return to the orphanage, not even to sleep for one second. He never wanted to see that building or the people inside it ever again. He remembered seeing Flash after the Awakening. His abilities were not active so his hair was its natural colour, but from the haughty smile on his face and the

5 The Attack
The priests and paladins reacted instantly and professionally to the explosions. Most of them tried to huddle all the children together like sheep and encircled them to protect them. The rest jumped to assist the Royal guards in protecting the king. The sudden fear and panic that came with the sudden attack had caused many of the children to subconsciously retract their abilities — including Alex. In fact, they did not even feel like people who had just recently awakened, they felt weak and helpless. A few moments ago, a large blood-red dome had appeared in the sky. The presence of that dome prevented anyone from teleporting in or out of the town square."A magic barrier dome? Shit, they mean business." Alex overheard one of the paladins mutter to himself in panic.People had been running helter-skelter since the explosions and now with the appearance of the dome, there was nowhere to run to. There was no way to even tell where the enemy was coming from because no hostile figure had
