Chapter Four: A Man Against Three Monsters
last update2026-09-10 18:49:45

Samuel's eyelids cracked open as he took a deep breath. He was heavily injured and exhausted; it seemed as if he'd pass out again.

‘How long have I been out?’ he groaned, sitting up. He then noticed the silver vial in his hand.

[×1 low-level healing potion

Price: 50 tokens

Effect: Restores 6 HP]

Was he supposed to drink it? He shrugged as he uncorked the vial. There was no harm in trying. He gulped down the potion and winced. It was bitter, spreading inside his entire mouth. But when it entered his throat, a cold sensation emanated. It was as if he'd drunk cold water.

[+6 HP]

His injuries healed rapidly, closing up.

[Health: 10/10]

He took a ragged breath as he tried to stand up. But his legs gave way, causing him to collapse to the ground. He'd thought that he'd regain his stamina with the health points. He was greatly mistaken.

[You'll gain stamina points by resting]

‘Oh,’ he raised an eyebrow and sat down.

[+1 stamina point]

“So that's how it is…” he muttered to himself.

[+1 stamina point]

He decided to check his player status. He'd seen the notifications before he passed out.

[System Player Status]

Name: Samuel Winston

Rank: E

Level:1

Mana: 3/10

Health:10/10

STA: 10/10

SP: 1/10

AP: 0/10

One point had been added to his skill points, experience points, and MP points. His AP remained the same.

“What's AP?” He asked.

[Your attribute points. It can be used to increase your stats]

“It's used to increase my stats?” He furrowed his brows. “Why not my attribute?”

The Abyssal System didn't answer.

“What about mana?” He asked. “What's that?”

[It's the overall term used to describe Qi, the life force of everything. It allows you to use your attribute and skills]

“I get…” Samuel nodded in realization.

The terms on the system's interface were confusing. But with the right questions, he'd gotten his answer.

He clicked on the skill tab.

[SKILLS]

Savage Pounce, LV1 (Active)

“Savage Pounce…” he squinted. This was the skill the Iron-toothed Sabertooth had used against him. He couldn't help but wonder what he could do with it.

[System update!

Mission: Hunt the five hunters in this Abyssal Zone

Reward: ×1 Active Skill, ×1 Passive Skill, +5 MP

Duration: 2hrs 30mins

Penalty for failure: Death]

His heart skipped a beat. He stared at the purple screen and clenched his fists. So, Declan and his men were still here…

He remembered the loaner stabbing him with the greatsword… The pain he felt as he died.

He stood up slowly and glanced at the carcass lying beside him. He had to retrieve the Abyssal Creature’s Qi core. It was a condensed blob of Qi.

He bent over the carcass and grabbed a bone from the ground. Then, he began tearing through the carcass. Qi cores were usually located within the chests of Abyssal Creatures. So, it didn't take him long to extract it.

The Iron-toothed Sabertooth’s Qi core was a black blob of twirling energy. When he touched it, he felt something uncanny within his body.

[That object is corruptible! Do not make prolonged contact with it!]

Samuel quickly pulled back his hand. He didn't have to be told twice. He could see the veins bulging in his right arm.

[Do you wish to store the Iron-toothed Sabertooth's Qi core in your inventory?]

[Yes] [No]

“Yes,” he replied.

Suddenly, a purple light engulfed the Abyssal Creature’s chest. When it dissipated, the Qi core was gone.

[INVENTORY]

×1 Iron-toothed Sabertooth's Qi core

[Objects extracted from Abyssal Creatures can be used in making items]

Samuel blinked.

[Do you wish to extract the Iron-toothed Sabertooth's fangs?]

[Yes] [No]

“Yes,” he replied.

[System extract…]

[System Extraction complete…]

[INVENTORY]

×1 Iron-toothed Sabertooth's Qi core

×4 Iron-toothed Sabertooth's fangs

[The Iron-toothed Sabertooth's fangs can be used for crafting weapons. Do you wish to craft a weapon?]

[Yes] [No]

Samuel readily agreed. There was no reason to think twice. Since he had to face those five hunters, he had to go prepared.

[Which weapon do you want to craft?]

[Greatsword] [Spear] [Bow]

“Greatsword,” he chose. He wasn't even good with spears and bows, so he picked the easiest choice.

[Weapon crafting initiated!

Duration: 5mins]

Samuel gripped the bone in his hand and crouched. He was in an exposed area with Abyssal Creatures running amok. He was still unarmed, so he didn't want to fight one… Not yet.

He looked around vigilantly. The ashy sands and bones stretched endlessly. It gave him such an eerie feeling… he couldn't help but shiver. If not for the mission, he would have left this place immediately. The Abyssal Gateway was at most a hundred meters away from him.

Something clattered behind him.

‘Damn…’ he immediately lunged forward. He didn't even look back to ascertain what was behind him.

There was a heavy thud behind him as he landed on the ground. He rolled to his feet and turned around. His face fell instantly, dread washing over him.

Three Iron-toothed Sabertooths stood in front of him, growling. They walked toward him slowly, trying to surround him.

Samuel took five steps back, without turning around. His eyes remained fixated on the Abyssal Creatures.

‘Damn it…’ he gripped the bone with trembling hands. ‘I should have known…’

[New mission triggered!

Mission objective: Slay the three Iron-toothed Sabertooths!

Reward: ???

Duration: 30mins

Penalty for failure: Death]

Samuel's expression turned grave.

One of the Iron-toothed Sabertooths pounced at him suddenly. Luckily, he was vigilant. He immediately rolled forward, evading the attack.

[SKILLS]

Savage Pounce, LV1 (Active)

He activated his skill as he skidded toward the Iron-toothed Sabertooth closest to him.

[Savage Pounce, LV1 activated!]

He planted his feet into the ground, stretching forth his right hand. The Iron-toothed Sabertooth tried to claw at his neck, but he leaped into the air.

He smashed the Iron-toothed Sabertooth's face with the bone as he soared over the Abyssal Creature. The bone shattered, jerking the Abyssal Creature’s face backward.

He landed behind it and leaped forward, grabbing another dry bone. This one was heavier and stronger than the previous.

He turned around to see the three Iron-toothed Sabertooths charging toward him. He took a deep breath and bent down. The ground shuddered as the Abyssal Creatures sprinted toward him. He could see the bones and skulls shattering under impact.

A regeneration attribute was no joke.[Your weapon’s effect is active! Do you want to activate its special ability?][Yes] [No]He nodded readily, taking a fighting stance. His swordsmanship was better than the scar-faced man's with the Sword Master skill. Now he just had to use his skills wisely. He'd figured out that he had a limit on how he used his skills. He couldn't use more than one skill at the same time. So he had to be sharp and take down the scar-faced man before he realized what was going on.“You are arrogant,” the scar-faced man bellowed. “And that will be your undoing!”He sprinted toward Samuel, swinging horizontally at his waist. • Chapter Nine: System Countdown

Samuel stretched out his right hand, summoning his Black-fanged Greatsword. The three men widened their eyes, exchanging apprehensive glances. The onlookers showed shocked expressions. Everyone knew Samuel was ordinary. He'd not awakened his Qi at the age of twenty-four. Hence, he could not take care of his mother till her death.“What is going on?” The scar-faced man asked. “I thought he wasn't an Evolved.”“He wasn't!” The second man answered. “He's nothing but a carrier!”He scrutinized Samuel with his beady eyes apprehensively. “Were you hiding your awakening all this while?”It was no news that several Evolved wanted to leave a low-key life. So they hid their awakening, pretending to be ordinary people.“I don't think he was hiding his ability…” The third man replied, rubbing his beard thoughtfully. “He must have made a deal with an Abyssal Creature…”Samuel gripped his greatsword. That wasn't far from the truth. But the Abyssal System wasn't an Abyssal Creature. In fact, he didn

Samuel slid into his shack undetected. The news of his mother's death had died down, and everyone was returning to their lives. His eyes became teary when he saw his mother's corpse lying on the ragged bed. She hadn't been buried yet. What had he expected? He shook his head bitterly. Who would want to bury a poor person like his mother? Society saw poor people as trash. The world treated them worse than other ordinary humans.Samuel didn't complain. He carried the corpse out of the shack, toward the woods north of the town. Without any disturbance, he buried his mother.Tears streamed down his eyes endlessly as he remembered the last moment he'd spent with her. She'd been singing her favorite lullaby.“Rest in peace, Mum,” he said, crossing his chest in prayer. “We'll meet in our next lives.”[Weapon fusion completed…][Your weapon has been upgraded to the Black-fanged Greatsword!Rank: CLevel: 1][INVENTORY]Black-fanged Greatsword, LV1 (C-Grade)Effect: Increases physical damage by

He wanted to run, but he couldn't. His tendons had been severed. He'd lost because of his miscalculations. He'd greatly underestimated Samuel… Partly because he'd recently awakened his attribute.“Samuel, listen to me…” he pleaded. “W-we can settle this. We'll return to the settlement, as if nothing happened.”“You should have thought about that before killing me.”Samuel's expression was cold. He stopped an inch away from Declan, his eyebrows furrowed.“Wait…” Declan crawled backward. “Don't you wanna know everything?”Samuel remained unblinking.“Someone paid me to kil
