2026-09-09 04:29:37Samuel looked around. Declan and his five men were gone. He was the only person in the E-Grade Abyssal Zone. He instinctively crouched, his heart skipping a beat. Then he remembered he had something extraordinary: the Abyssal System.
“Hello?” He called. “Are you online?” Wasn't he supposed to get a buff in strength or something? So far, he felt nothing. He was still ordinary. [Ding!] [System online…] [System initializing player status…] [System initialization complete…] [Welcome, player!] Samuel blinked, staring at the screens before him. They were purple with white characters. [System Player Status] Name: Samuel Winston Classification: Evolved Species: Human Profession: Carrier Rank: E Level:1 Mana: 2/10 Health:10/10 STA: 10/10 SP: 0/10 Exp: 0/10 AP: 0/10 He stretched forth his right hand to touch one of the screens. Initially, he'd thought they were tangible. But his hand went right through it. ‘They’re holograms…’ he muttered inwardly. His mother had taught him some things about the Old Era. It was the period before the apocalypse. "Mana?" He read out loud. "Shouldn't the real term be Qi?" Qi was the life force that ran through everything. But only Evolved, Altered, and Abyssal Creatures could utilize it. Four separate holographic screens floated in the air. They contained new information. [STATS] Strength: 4 Agility: 3 Vitality: 3 Intelligence: 6 Perception: 5 Willpower: 7 Samuel didn't know what those terms meant, so he moved on to the second screen. [SPECIAL] Class: ??? Attribute: Abyss Title: None “My class is unknown?” He furrowed his brows. “What do you mean by that, Abyss System?” No answer. “Hey, answer me!” Silence. He couldn't help but become bothered. Every Evolved had a class and attribute. A class was the role or specialization, while an attribute was the innate supernatural abilities. Since he was an Evolved, he'd hoped to get a Guard or Magician class. But he got nothing! And then there was this Abyss attribute… “I've never heard of it…” he muttered to himself. [SKILLS] None He sighed when he saw that he had no skill. He wasn't disappointed, though. He believed there was a chance to get a skill. [INVENTORY] 50 Bronze Tokens He was surprised when he looked at his inventory. Didn't Declan collect his bronze tokens? [The player's belongings were transferred to his inventory during revival] “Oh…” Samuel nodded slowly. Everything seemed strange, but he was beginning to get used to it. He was now the Abyss System's player, sworn to rebel against gods and humanity. A series of crunching sounds interrupted his train of thought. He quickly turned around and looked in that direction. That was when he saw it. A monstrous creature was creeping toward him. It looked like a crossbreed between a tiger and a bear. Its entire body was pitch black, with two tusks protruding from its maw. Samuel instantly recognized the Abyssal Creature. [System scanning…] [System scanning complete…] [TARGET IDENTIFIED Classification: Abyssal Creature Species: Iron-toothed Sabertooth Rank: E Level: 1 Attributes: Enhanced Strength, Enhanced Durability, Keen Smell Skills: Iron Fang, Savage Pounce Information acquisition: 20%] ‘Target?’ Samuel took two steps back. There was no way that creature was his target. It'd rip him apart instantly! [System update! Mission: Kill the Iron-toothed Sabertooth in ten minutes! Reward: ×1 Active Skill Penalty for failure: Death] Samuel's expression turned grave. He hadn't expected the Abyssal System to be very strict. The Iron-toothed Sabertooth growled, saliva dribbling down its maw. Its eyes locked onto Samuel, tracking his every move. Then without warning, it lunged at him. “Shit…” Samuel cursed as he rolled forward. He heard a heavy thud behind him, and the sound of crushing skulls. But he didn't dare turn back. He sprinted forward, as if his life depended on it. The Iron-toothed Sabertooth turned around sharply and pounced at him. If he hadn't leaped forward a split second earlier, he would have been crushed. He landed and rolled immediately, turning around. ‘It’s fast…’ he thought. ‘I can't escape by running… So I have to fight.’ [9mins 30secs left…] Samuel clenched his fists, planting his left foot in the ground. There was no escape from this… Only survival. He'd either survive or die! The Iron-toothed Sabertooth roared, and then charged at him. It swiped its right paw at his face, a faint light reflecting on its claws. Samuel sidestepped, evading the fatal attack. He then turned around and watched as the Abyssal Creature crashed to the ground. Without giving it a second to turn around, he pounced on it. At that point, there was no turning back. Every fear in him had already dissipated, replaced by the will to survive. He didn't even care about the Abyssal Creature swiping its claws at his face. He wrapped his arms around its neck and pulled it. He buried his face behind the Iron-toothed Sabertooth’s head, using it as a shield against its claws. He didn't let go, even when the Abyssal Creature rolled on the ground. [-2 HP] Samuel gritted his teeth and closed his eyes. He could feel the bones on the ground stab his back and crush him. Blood drizzled out of the wounds, but he didn't let go. [-4 HP] Vanessa's betrayal and his mother's death filled him with determination. His will to survive became terrifying. Crack! The Iron-toothed Sabertooth’s neck snapped after nine minutes. The Abyssal Creature became limp, lying still on Samuel. [You have killed an Iron-toothed Sabertooth!] [+1 EXP] [+1 SP] [+1 MP] [System update! Mission: Kill the Iron-toothed Sabertooth in ten minutes! Reward: ×1 Active Skill Penalty for failure: Death] [Mission accomplished!] [You have unlocked a new skill!] Samuel didn't stand up or open his eyes. He lay there, panting. He'd killed the Iron-toothed Sabertooth. He'd almost died, but he did it. [SKILLS] Savage Pounce, LV1 (Active) Samuel pushed the Abyssal Creature off his body. He stood up slowly, wiping the blood off his face. [Do you wish to buy ×1 healing potion with your 50 bronze tokens] [Yes] [No] He stared at the screen weakly. His vision darkened for a split second. [Health: 4/10] He chose ‘yes ’ and smiled. “So I can also buy things…” He didn't complete his statement when he collapsed to the ground. A small silver vial appeared in his right palm, but he was already unconscious.
