Chapter Seven: The Victor’s Song
last update2026-09-15 20:57:57

Samuel stood up slowly. He was no longer exhausted, even though he was still injured. He could feel the grueling pain all over his body. It felt like he was on fire. But he didn't mind because he was staring at the man who once seemed untouchable—the man who claimed his life in this Abyssal Zone.

He walked toward Declan, gripping his greatsword. “You killed me without thinking twice.”

Declan's facial muscles trembled. He wanted to run, but he couldn't. His tendons had been severed. He'd lost because of his miscalculations. He'd greatly underestimated Samuel… Partly because he'd recently awakened his attribute.

“Samuel, listen to me…” he pleaded. “W-we can settle this. We'll return to the settlement, as if nothing happened.”

“You should have thought about that before killing me.”

Samuel's expression was cold. He stopped an inch away from Declan, his eyebrows furrowed.

“Wait…” Declan crawled backward. “Don't you wanna know everything?”

Samuel remained unblinking.

“Someone paid me to kill you,” Declan revealed. “I can tell you… but you have to promise me you won't kill me…”

“No,” Samuel answered.

Declan's expression turned ashen. “W-what? I can tell you—”

Samuel swung his greatsword at his neck, interrupting his sentence. He watched as Declan's body turned limp instantly.

[Mission completed!]

Samuel heaved a sigh of relief. This time he didn't fall on his knees. Instead, he looked around vigilantly.

[You have obtained a new active skill!]

[You have obtained a new passive skill!]

Samuel immediately viewed his player status.

He clicked on his skill tab to check his new skills, his brows creasing.

[SKILLS]

Savage Pounce, LV1 (Active)

Sword Master, LV1 (Active)

Flaming Bow, LV1 (Active)

Iron Skin, LV1 (Passive)

“Huh?” he recognized those skills instantly. “Why do I possess those skills now? Didn't they belong to the artillerist and Mark?”

[Your Abyssal Class allows you to gain the skills of Evolved killed.]

“Oh,” he nodded slowly in realization. He then clicked his tongue. He would have loved to have the two Magicians’ skills as well.

[You currently have four skill slots!]

“So that's the reason.”

He glanced at the corpses lying around.

[There are spoils of war present! Do you wish to collect them?]

[Yes] [No]

Samuel raised an eyebrow. Although he didn't know which spoils the system mentioned, he agreed.

[Five spoils have been added to your inventory!]

[INVENTORY]

×3 Iron-toothed Sabertooth's Qi core

×1 Bronze Spear, LV1 (E-Grade—Broken)

×1 Black Greatsword, LV3 (D-Grade)

5,000 bronze tokens]

Samuel’s gaze lingered on the three Iron-toothed Sabertooth's Qi cores. Obviously, they were also spoils. He then looked at the bronze tokens, his heart skipping a beat. That was a lot of money!

[Your health is critical! Do you wish to spend ×1 healing potion to heal?]

[Yes] [No]

“Yes,” Samuel agreed. He closed his eyes as a purple hue engulfed him. All his wounds healed rapidly, his pain dissipating. A few minutes later, he'd recovered completely.

[A D-Grade weapon has been detected! Do you wish to fuse the Black Greatsword, LV3 with the Iron-toothed Greatsword, LV2?]

[Yes] [No]

Samuel became elated. He couldn't control the smile tugging at the ends of his lips.

“Yes,” he replied. “If it's possible, also fuse the Bronze Spear with them.”

A purple light engulfed his Iron-toothed Greatsword. When it cleared, his greatsword had vanished into thin air.

[Weapon fusion initiated…

Duration: 2hrs 30mins]

‘It’s so long…’ he frowned slightly. He decided to leave the Abyssal Zone immediately. Without a weapon, he didn't think he'd be able to fight several Abyssal Creatures.

Samuel walked back in the Abyssal Gateway’s direction. It was the only way he could get out of this Abyssal Zone. Thankfully, this was an E-Grade Abyssal Zone. So far, he'd not encountered a D-Rank Abyssal Creature.

He heard a roar from a far distance and quickened his pace. He didn't want to fight whatever that was. Relief washed over him when he saw the black swirling vortex.

The Black Gang had brought him here to kill him. Unfortunately for them, he awakened with the Abyssal System. Now they were dead, while he was walking out alive. What an irony.

He walked out of the grey world into the blinding sunlight. He shielded his face with his right hand, squinting. It took him some minutes to adjust to the light.

He then walked towards the town. Now that he'd awakened, there were a lot of things to do. He wasn't capable of getting his revenge yet. Peter was a D-Rank hunter, whereas he was only an E-Rank carrier. He'd only defeated Declan due to the element of surprise. Peter was more experienced, so he'd be decimated.

“Hey!” Someone yelled at him.

He turned around and saw a young man walking toward him. He didn't recognize the man because he'd never seen him before. After all, Windfield Town was a big place.

“You shouldn't be out here,” the man said, stopping before him. “An E-Grade Abyssal Gateway recently appeared here. It's dangerous.”

Samuel didn't say anything. The man must be one of those hunters from the Red Cross guild. He could see the armour that the man was wearing. There was a red cross on the chest of his breastplate.

“Don't worry, but our hunter guild will—”

Samuel walked away, ignoring the man blatantly. He was fed up with people pretending to be what they were not. Hunters like him claimed to be heroes. Yet, they watched ordinary people suffer. He couldn't stand such hypocrisy.

The man creased his brows when he saw Samuel leave. He couldn't help but wonder why the young man reacted like this. He shook his head bitterly and looked up.

“It's definitely because of the government,” he said. “If only they'd used their power for everyone's good…”

A few minutes later, ten other people arrived. They glanced in the direction Samuel had headed, a frown on their faces. They didn't say anything and slowly headed in the Abyssal Gateway’s direction.

So he had to be sharp and take down the scar-faced man before he realized what was going on.“You are arrogant,” the scar-faced man bellowed. “And that will be your undoing!”He sprinted toward Samuel, swinging horizontally at his waist. Samuel stretched out his right hand, summoning his Black-fanged Greatsword. The three men widened their eyes, exchanging apprehensive glances. The onlookers showed shocked expressions. Everyone knew Samuel was ordinary. He'd not awakened his Qi at the age of twenty-four. Hence, he could not take care of his mother till her death.“What is going on?” The scar-faced man asked. “I thought he wasn't an Evolved.”“He wasn't!” The second man answered. “He's nothing but a carrier!”He scrutinized Samuel with his beady eyes apprehensively. “Were you hiding your awakening all this while?”It was no news that several Evolved wanted to leave a low-key life. So they hid their awakening, pretending to be ordinary people.“I don't think he was hiding his ability…” The third man replied, rubbing his beard thoughtfully. “He must have made a deal with an Abyssal Creature…”Samuel gripped his greatsword. That wasn't far from the truth. But the Abyssal System wasn't an Abyssal Creature. In fact, he didn

His eyes became teary when he saw his mother's corpse lying on the ragged bed. She hadn't been buried yet. What had he expected? He shook his head bitterly. Who would want to bury a poor person like his mother? Society saw poor people as trash. The world treated them worse than other ordinary humans.Samuel didn't complain. He carried the corpse out of the shack, toward the woods north of the town. Without any disturbance, he buried his mother.Tears streamed down his eyes endlessly as he remembered the last moment he'd spent with her.
