Chapter 8. : The eskapa soldiers

Meeting Sei, one of the characters from the comic book I created, was an extraordinary experience that left me practically speechless where I stood.

She walked away before I could even talk to her, and I did nothing to chase after her until she was already surrounded by her fellow Eskapa soldiers.

"She really is as kind as I imagined," I whispered.

She possessed every single trait I had written into her character, making me believe she could help me with my problem.

" No, I'm sure she'll help me because Sei is naturally merciful and helpful to anyone in need."

" That's right. If I talk to her and explain my situation, she might be able to help me find Koko."

Without wasting another second, I hurriedly followed Sei to ask for her assistance.

"Wait, Miss Sei!" I shouted.

Before I could even get close, a large hand from behind me yanked me back.

He dragged me until I sat hard on the ground, my bottom hitting the rocky earth.

"Ouch!"

"Hey, what's your problem?"

I was shocked by being thrown like that, and when I turned to look at them, their appearances instantly made me nervous.

Three Eskapa soldiers blocked my path. I knew that the green-skinned, giant minotaur-like creature was the one who had grabbed me because of his massive hands.

To his left was a woman with brown hair and black skin. Her black eyes were strikingly unique, and I couldn't quite tell what kind of creature she was.

To the minotaur's right was a woman with blonde hair and cat ears. They were all wearing the blue Eskapa capes, though I couldn't tell if she had a cat tail to match.

Their intimidating looks momentarily startled me since I wasn't used to facing beings like them.

"They look terrifying."

Even so, they were members of Eskapa, so I had nothing to fear—after all, Eskapa's purpose was to care for and protect the weak.

A moment later, the woman with black eyes stepped forward to stop me.

"Pardon me, sir, but you cannot simply approach our queen without permission," she said softly.

Her voice was extremely gentle, but because I was in a rush to catch up to Sei, I couldn't help raising my voice and answering her with a question.

"Permission? Whose permission?" I blurted out as I stood up from where I had fallen.

"I don't have bad intentions; I just want to ask Sei for help," I added.

It wasn't that I was angry, but I knew that if I didn't reach Sei in time, I would lose my only chance to ask for her help.

However, the soldiers blocking my path weren't about to let me pass.

The cat-eared woman immediately jumped into the conversation and snapped at me.

"Plenty of people want to ask the queen for help just like you."

"Learn your place, human," she stated.

Her sharp glare and condescending tone rubbed me the wrong way.

My intentions were pure, and I knew I had to do this because Sei was the only one who could help me right now.

"What do you mean by that?" I asked her.

I summoned the courage to face them, telling myself they had no right to treat me poorly just because I was a human. First of all, based on Eskapa's rules, they were supposed to help me since that was their purpose, and receiving assistance from them was my right.

It was obvious on their faces that they didn't like what I said, but the black-eyed woman remained calm, addressing my harsh attitude with patience.

"It is also our right to choose who we help," she replied.

"And that depends entirely on the problem you want to ask our help for."

With that, she asked about my problem and how Eskapa could assist me.

"Tell me, what exactly is the issue you want to bring to our queen?"

Yet, even as she asked, hesitation gripped me. Should I really tell them about my situation?

I figured there was no harm in telling them my predicament, but I kept wondering how much I should reveal.

" Wait, can I really tell them everything? " I thought to myself.

Suddenly, I felt conflicted. Could I really spill the details of my problem to people I didn't even know?

I had no memories or knowledge of them beyond the fact that they were likely minor background characters in the story.

What was I even supposed to say? Should I tell them I came from another world and that they were just characters in a book?

" There's a high chance they won't believe me. Even so, they're still Eskapa members with a duty to help me, and they can't help me if I don't speak up."

Still, I seriously doubted it. They might just laugh at me, or worse, think I was crazy and throw me in jail. What happened to me sounded completely unbelievable—even to myself.

" Well, I don't have a choice. Damn it, I guess I'll just have to trust them."

While I stood there deep in thought and thoroughly confused, the pocket of the black-eyed woman suddenly emitted a sound.

She pulled out a small, spherical object, which produced a glowing ring floating around it.

A voice came through it, resembling a telephone used to contact other soldiers.

"Team Leader Ataparag, the commander is calling you for a briefing."

Hearing the order, they instantly lost interest in listening to me.

They made moves to leave while telling me to come back another time if I wanted to ask for help.

"We have far more important matters to attend to," the cat-eared woman added.

I couldn't fathom why they were brushing me off so easily when it was literally their duty to help.

Before they could take another step away, I stopped them.

"Wait, hold on!" I shouted.

I managed to make them pause and turn back to me.

"Just listen to me first," I pleaded.

At that point, I begged them again. With nowhere to stay in this town, I desperately hoped they would listen. Helping people like me was part of Eskapa's duty; they couldn't just abandon me.

"My life is on the line here, so you can't just ignore me, especially since prioritizing people like me is part of Eskapa's mandate," I argued.

"Prioritizing?" the cat-eared woman scoffed, looking irritated by the word. Her attitude toward me turned even more hostile.

"You know, you have a very odd tone for someone asking for a favor, but fine, speak your mind," she said.

She allowed me to explain, but her tone made it glaringly obvious she had zero interest in listening.

Even so, I tried to speak up, hoping at least to get some temporary shelter and food while I was stuck in this place.

"It's kind of a long story why I ended up here, but right now, I don't have anywhere to stay."

She cut me off immediately, rushing me to spit out my problem without beating around the box.

"We'll give you five seconds to state your problem," she sneered.

I winced at that. She clearly wasn't taking me seriously and had no intention of helping.

I had literally just told her it was a long story, and then she gave me five seconds to explain.

It was crystal clear she didn't want to listen to me and would likely just brush off anything I said.

" If I tell her my problem about the angel Koko, there's a huge chance she won't believe me and will definitely chase me away, " I thought to myself.

" Only Sei is truly trustworthy with my problems."

Even though they seemed in a rush, the black-eyed woman—whom the caller on the device had addressed as Captain Ataparag—showed some understanding.

"Nyabu, let him speak. Who knows, maybe what he's saying is true," she said.

I was glad to hear that. This captain seemed very different from her companion, whom she called Nyabu.

However, Nyabu didn't take it seriously at all and warned Ataparag not to be too soft on people like me.

"You can't just hand things out to people," Nyabu snapped.

She reminded her leader not to forget what happened with the monthly distribution to the locals, where none of them appreciated what they were given.

"They beg us for help, and in the end, we just catch them gambling away the money we gave them," she added harshly.

She had no qualms about pointing out how many times Ataparag had been played for a fool due to her generous nature, especially when it came to handing out cash.

"Yes, it's our duty to help them, but we aren't their personal bank whenever they need money," she continued.

Ataparag just shook her head, speechless after hearing Nyabu bring up how easily she got played and scammed.

From Ataparag's reaction, her companion's words hit close to home, leaving the captain to look down in quiet dejection.

"You didn't have to air that out in front of an outsider," Ataparag muttered, looking embarrassed.

Looking closely at her reaction, she seemed deeply disappointed in herself—she only ever wanted to help, but it always seemed to backfire.

"I just hate seeing these beggars take advantage of your kindness, Leader," Nyabu said.

I was stunned when I heard that woman call me a beggar. Apparently, she had lumped me in with people who only wanted to milk them for money.

That was probably why she refused to take me seriously from the very beginning—she assumed I was a scammer.

"Hey, I'm not a beggar, so stop judging me!" I yelled back at her.

"Oh yeah? Do you have money?" she shot back immediately.

"M-money? N-no," I stammered.

"A house? A job?" she pressed further.

I didn't know what clever response to give because it was true—I had no money, no house, and no job. Lying just to avoid looking pathetic wasn't going to work either.

"Tsk, a beggar," she scoffed, looking at me with absolute disdain.

She looked down on me so intensely, sizing up my miserable state. But how could I defend myself when I really was in a wretched situation? I was just a stranger in this world, completely empty-handed.

" Damn it! I really don't like this cat girl " I thought to myself.
