"Mr. Cole, I'm afraid there's been a change."
The hospital administrator didn't even look up from her clipboard. Ethan stood at the front desk of St. Mary's with a bag of oranges for his mother, three hours of sleep, and a pair of borrowed sunglasses hiding the fact that he could suddenly see every dust particle floating in the air.
"What kind of change?"
"Your mother's bed has been reassigned. Alpha Reed's office called this morning." She finally met his eyes, and there was something like pity in them. "Her treatment was covered by the Hale Estate staff program. This morning, at Alpha Reed's request, the household office suspended it. Unless the Alpha withdraws his complaint by tomorrow, she'll be discharged."
"She can't be discharged. She can barely stand."
"I'm sorry. It's not my decision." She lowered her voice. "Word is, the Alpha wants a public apology. At the Moon Assembly tonight."
Ethan's hand tightened around the bag until an orange split.
So that was the price. Kneel in front of the whole pack, beg Derek's forgiveness, and maybe his mother would keep her bed. Refuse, and she would be wheeled out onto the street.
Marcus Reed had found the one place Ethan couldn't fight back.
***
His mother was awake when he came in. Grace Cole was propped against two thin pillows, an IV in her arm, a heart monitor beeping beside her. Paler than last week. Thinner.
But her eyes were sharp, and they were fixed on him.
"You look different," she said softly.
"Different how?"
"You're standing straighter. Like you're not carrying the whole world on your back anymore."
If only she knew.
He sat beside her and peeled an orange, and he didn't tell her about the bed, or the alley, or the System, or the blue panel waiting quietly at the edge of his vision. He told her Lily was fine. That was true. Lily was at Toby's place, with the door locked and Toby's two very large Omega uncles sitting in the living room.
Grace took his hand. Her fingers were cold.
"Your father used to make promises with his face," she said. "The way you're doing now. He always kept them."
"Then I'll keep mine," Ethan said. "You're not leaving this hospital until you're better. I swear."
***
The full moon rose over Silver Creek just after eight.
Once a month, every member of the pack gathered at the Reed estate for the Moon Assembly. Attendance was mandatory for every wolf, and the Hale household always lent its human staff to the Reeds for the night.
Someone had to pour the wine.
The moment Ethan walked through the gate, every head in the stone courtyard turned. With his new senses, he heard every whisper as clearly as if it were spoken into his ear.
That's him.
He put Jace Miller in the hospital.
Impossible. He's human.
Derek's going to kill him.
Toby appeared at his side carrying a tray of drinks, his round face tight with worry.
"Why did you come?" he hissed. "Derek's telling everyone you jumped his friends with a pipe. Alpha Marcus is furious."
"He took Mom's hospital bed, Toby. I didn't have a choice."
At the far end of the courtyard, on a raised stone platform beneath an ancient oak, sat Alpha Marcus Reed. Derek stood beside him, a white bandage across his swollen nose, Bianca clinging to his arm.
Derek saw Ethan and smiled.
Ethan noticed something else, too. At the very back of the crowd, half hidden in the shadows beyond the torches, stood a man in a black suit who did not belong to Silver Creek. He held a phone low against his hip, its camera pointed at the platform.
Marcus raised one hand. The courtyard fell silent.
"Before we run tonight," the Alpha said, his voice carrying effortlessly, "we have a matter of discipline. Ethan Cole. Come forward."
***
The crowd parted like water.
"Three members of this pack were injured last night," Marcus said. "They say you attacked them."
"They kidnapped my sister," Ethan said. "They tied her up in a van and threatened to hurt her."
A ripple ran through the crowd.
"Liar," Derek said instantly. "They went to collect a debt."
"Ask them what Derek told them on the phone," Ethan said. "Ask them who said take the sister."
Marcus didn't even glance at his son.
"A human does not accuse wolves," he said coldly. "Your family has eaten from Mrs. Hale's table for twenty years, and she has asked me to settle this. I tolerated your insolence out of respect for your father." He pointed at the stone floor. "Kneel. Apologize to my son and to the pack. Then your family will be dismissed from Hale Estate and blacklisted from every business the Reeds and the Hales own."
Blacklisted. No job in this city would hire him. No hospital would take his mother. She would be on the street within a week.
[New Mission issued.]
[MISSION: Do not kneel.]
[Reward: Seal 1 progress +50%.]
"Kneel," Marcus repeated, and this time his voice carried the full weight of an Alpha's command.
It hit Ethan like a physical blow. The power of the order rolled across the courtyard, and every wolf in the pack lowered their heads. Even Toby. Even the elders. At the edges of the courtyard, the human servants dropped to their knees, trembling. Humans were never built to stand against an Alpha.
It pressed down on Ethan's shoulders, his spine, his knees.
And from somewhere deep inside him, something answered.
Something old. Something enormous. Something that did not kneel to anyone.
Ethan's knees locked. He lifted his head. The command broke against him like a wave against a cliff.
The courtyard went dead silent.
"No," Ethan said.
***
Derek moved before his father could speak. He leapt from the platform, half shifted, face twisted with rage, and swung at Ethan's head with the full strength of a grown werewolf.
Ethan caught his fist.
His hand closed around Derek's wrist an inch from his face and stopped it cold.
Derek pushed. His arm shook. Veins stood out on his neck. He could not move Ethan's hand a single millimeter.
"You told me to fight like a wolf," Ethan said quietly. "Is this what you meant?"
He squeezed.
Derek screamed and dropped to one knee. Right there, at the foot of his father's platform, in front of the entire pack, Derek Reed knelt before the human.
[Mission complete.]
[SEAL 1 BROKEN.]
Pain exploded behind Ethan's eyes, and the world fell away.
***
Candlelight. Rose petals on a stone floor.
This time it wasn't a flicker. It was real. He could smell the wax and the roses, feel the weight of a ring on his finger and a joy in his chest so complete it hurt.
She stood in front of him in a crimson wedding gown, silver hair falling over her shoulders. And for the first time, he saw her face.
She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. In this life or any other.
And she was holding a silver dagger with a black moon on its hilt.
He watched it happen in slow motion. Her hand rising. The blade flashing. That terrible cold sliding into his chest. Her face was empty as he fell.
***
Ethan came back on his knees, gasping, his hand pressed over his heart.
No one was laughing now. Marcus Reed was on his feet. Derek was scrambling backward across the stone, cradling his wrist. Bianca had both hands over her mouth.
"His eyes," someone whispered. "Look at his eyes."
In the polished silver tray Toby had dropped beside him, Ethan caught his reflection.
His eyes weren't brown.
They were gold. Pure, burning gold.
Then they faded.
Near the platform, the oldest wolf in Silver Creek, a stooped elder named Harlan who had not spoken at an Assembly in ten years, rose slowly from his chair. His hands were shaking.
"Gold," he rasped. "I've seen eyes like that only once. In a painting older than this house." He turned to the Alpha, and his voice dropped to a whisper that carried through the silent courtyard. "Marcus. Do you know what that boy is?"
Marcus Reed's face had gone grey. For the first time in Ethan's memory, the Alpha of Silver Creek looked afraid.
"Assembly's over," Marcus barked. "Everyone, inside. Now."
Nobody moved. A hundred wolves stood frozen, staring at the human boy kneeling in the middle of the courtyard.
At the back of the courtyard, the man in the black suit lowered his phone, typed a short message, and slipped out through the gate. On the back of his hand, a faint mark shimmered in the moonlight.
[Warning: Host has been observed.]
But Ethan barely saw it. One image burned in his mind brighter than the moon.
Silver hair. Empty eyes. A dagger.
The woman on the rooftop.
It was her.
The woman who killed me is still alive.

Across the city, on the seventy-ninth floor of Hale Tower, a phone lit up in the dark. Every hunter's report went to the head of the search first.
Selene opened the message. A ten-second video: a kneeling young man in a borrowed white shirt, his eyes burning gold.
She watched it once. Then she deleted it, and typed a message to Victoria with steady fingers.
False alarm. The Reed boy lost a fight to a lucky human. Nothing here.
She pressed send and closed her eyes. Victoria would believe her. Victoria always believed her.
But the hunter had seen those golden eyes with his own.
And hunters talked.

The uniform still smelled like his father.Ethan found it in the back of the estate's uniform closet on Monday morning, hanging in a plastic bag with a faded name tag pinned to the chest: D. COLE. Chapter 13: Fight Night
The Pit had never been this full.Five hundred werewolves packed the old rail tunnel, standing on crates, hanging from the rusted support beams, pressed so tightly against the cage that the chain-link bowed inward. The air was hot and thick with sweat and beer and the electric smell of wolves on the edge of shifting. Someone had hung a banner from the ceiling, painted in red: REED vs. THE HUMAN.Betting slips fluttered everywhere. The odds on the board read DEREK REED 1:8. Chapter 12: Redline
Selene. The vial was the color of fresh blood. It sat in a padded steel case on Victoria's desk, glowing faintly under the lamp. A label on the side read REDLINE — PROTOTYPE 7 — HALE BIOSCIENCES."Isn't it pretty?" Victoria said.Selene stood by the window, hands folded behind her back. "What does it do?""For about ten minutes, it makes a wolf three times stronger than he has any right to be. Faster. Angrier. Pain stops meaning anything." Victoria lifted the vial and turned it in the light. "After ten minutes, the heart usually gives out. We're still working on that part.""And you're giving it to Derek Reed.""Marcus asked very nicely." Victoria smiled. "He's terrified his son will lose to a human in front of the whole city. It would be the end of the Reed name. So I offered him a little help."Selene kept her voice perfectly flat. "You bet against Derek.""I did." Victoria set the vial back in the case and closed the lid with a soft click. "And I'll probably lose. Unless the Cole b
