Chapter 7: One Punch

The cage door slammed shut behind him.

The sound echoed through the tunnel, and two hundred werewolves roared. Somewhere in the crowd, Toby was shouting his name, his voice cracking.

[Reward: Strength +2. Combat Instinct Lv.1 acquired.]

Heat rushed through Ethan's arms and settled in his chest. The world sharpened. The noise of the crowd faded to a low hum, and suddenly he could see every detail of the man in front of him: the old knee injury Brutus favored on the left, the slight drop of his right shoulder before he moved, the way his eyes flicked to the crowd every few seconds, enjoying the attention.

Brutus cracked his knuckles. Up close, he was even bigger. Each of his fists was the size of Ethan's head.

"Nothing personal, human," he said. "But I've got money on this."

The bald man rang a bell.

Brutus charged.

***

He was fast. Much faster than anything that size should have been.

Ethan threw himself sideways, and a fist the size of a cinder block smashed into the chain-link fence where his head had been. The whole cage shuddered. Metal screamed.

The crowd howled with delight.

Brutus swung again, a backhand. Ethan ducked under it and felt the wind of it ruffle his hair. A third swing. He twisted away, his sneakers squeaking on the bloodstained concrete.

Don't trade blows, something inside him whispered. He's stronger. You're faster. Make him tired. Make him angry.

It didn't sound like his own voice. It sounded older. Colder. Like someone who had fought a thousand battles and found every one of them a little bit boring.

Ethan listened.

He danced backward. Left. Right. He let Brutus chase him around the cage, each swing missing by inches. The crowd's laughter began to change into something else: murmurs, confusion.

"Stop running and fight!" someone yelled.

Brutus's face had gone red. His breathing was getting heavier. He was used to ending fights in ten seconds, and this one had lasted a full minute.

"Stand still, you little rat!"

He lunged, and for the first time, Ethan didn't dodge.

He stepped inside the swing, the way he had with Brent at the pier, and drove his fist into Brutus's ribs with every ounce of his new strength.

It felt like punching a brick wall.

His knuckles split open. Pain shot up his arm to the elbow. Brutus didn't even take a step back.

Twelve points of Strength against a ranked werewolf. Ethan suddenly understood exactly what that number on the panel meant, and how far he still had to go.

Brutus grunted. That was all. Then a massive hand clamped around Ethan's throat and lifted him clean off the ground.

"Got you," Brutus breathed.

He slammed Ethan into the fence.

Pain exploded down his spine. Brutus slammed him again. Ethan heard something crack in his side, felt the warm rush of blood from his nose. The crowd's roar came back, louder than ever, a wall of noise.

Brutus pulled him close, grinning with too many teeth.

"Human," he said. "You should've stayed home."

He drew back his other fist. His fingers were lengthening into claws.

[Warning: Host's life in danger.]

[MISSION: Defeat Brutus.]

[Skill granted in advance. One use.]

Something ignited in Ethan's right hand.

It started as warmth and became heat and became something like light, a pulse of gold running up his arm from his knuckles to his heart. He didn't understand it. He didn't need to. His body knew exactly what it was.

As Brutus's claws came down, Ethan grabbed the werewolf's wrist with his left hand and, with his right, struck him once beneath the jaw.

There was a sound like a thunderclap.

Brutus's head snapped back. His eyes rolled up. His grip on Ethan's throat went slack, and the seven-foot werewolf toppled backward like a felled tree, hitting the concrete so hard the whole cage rattled.

He didn't move.

***

The silence was total.

Two hundred werewolves stood frozen, beers halfway to their lips, wads of money forgotten in their fists. Somewhere in the back, a can rolled across the floor and clinked against the fence.

Ethan stood in the middle of the cage, swaying, blood running down his face. His right hand was still tingling. For a split second, he thought he saw a faint golden glow fading from his knuckles.

Then the bald man found his voice.

"Winner," he croaked, "by knockout. The... the human."

The tunnel exploded.

Half the crowd was screaming in fury. Half was screaming in disbelief. A fight broke out near the bar between two wolves who had bet opposite ways. And through all of it, one voice rose above the rest.

"YES! YES! I'M RICH! SIXTY TO ONE, BABY! SIXTY TO ONE!"

Toby was standing on a chair, waving his betting slip in the air like a flag, tears streaming down his face.

[Mission complete.]

[Seal 2 progress: 20%.]

[Main Mission progress: Save Grace Cole. 82%.]

***

The bald man counted out the money with shaking hands in a cramped office at the back of the tunnel.

"Twenty thousand for beating a ranked fighter." He pushed a thick envelope across the desk. "In my fifteen years running this place, I never paid a human a single cent. Who the hell are you, kid?"

"Nobody," Ethan said, and took the envelope.

Twenty thousand dollars. More money than he had ever held in his life. Toby's winnings made it more than thirty. His mother's bill, paid. With money left over for a door that locked, for Lily's school shoes, for food.

Toby was waiting outside the office door. The moment Ethan stepped out, his best friend crashed into him in a bear hug that made his cracked ribs scream.

"Ow. Toby. Ribs."

"Sorry! Sorry." Toby let go, then grabbed him by both shoulders, staring at his face. "Dude. Dude. You knocked out Brutus. With one punch. You're human. That's not possible. That's not even a little bit possible."

"I got lucky."

"Lucky?" Toby's voice cracked. "Ethan, your hand was glowing."

Ethan looked down at his knuckles. Bruised, bloody, perfectly ordinary.

"Trick of the light," he said.

Toby didn't look convinced. But he didn't push, either. That was the thing about Toby. He never pushed.

Ethan walked out of the office corridor feeling lighter than he had in years.

Then a slow, mocking clap echoed down from above.

Ethan looked up.

On a metal walkway overlooking the cage, behind a velvet rope marked VIP, stood Derek Reed. His nose was still bandaged. His wrist was in a brace from the Moon Assembly. Bianca leaned against the railing beside him, and three of his friends stood behind them, arms folded.

"Impressive," Derek called down. "Really. I didn't know humans could take that much punishment and keep standing." He smiled. "I guess that makes you good entertainment."

"What do you want, Derek?"

"A rematch." Derek leaned on the railing. "In the cage. Here. One week from tonight. You and me, Pit rules, no holding back." He held up a finger. "Winner takes one hundred thousand dollars. My money."

The crowd below, already buzzing, went quiet to listen.

"And if I say no?" Ethan asked.

"Then everyone in this city finds out the human who embarrassed the Reed family is a coward who only wins against drunks in a dark alley." Derek's smile widened. "And maybe St. Mary's finds out where your mommy's money came from. Illegal gambling. Assault. I wonder what that does to a patient's file."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

[New Mission issued.]

[MISSION: Defeat Derek Reed in the Pit.]

[Reward: Seal 2 progress +50%. ???]

[Warning: Opponent is not planning a fair fight.]

Ethan looked up at Derek for a long moment.

"Fine," he said. "One week."

Derek laughed and turned away, Bianca hanging on his arm.

Ethan didn't notice the man standing alone near the tunnel exit. A man in a black suit who didn't belong among the gamblers, whose phone was raised just slightly, its camera pointed at the human who had knocked out a ranked fighter with a single punch.

On the back of his hand, a faint mark shimmered in the lamplight.

The same man from the Moon Assembly.

This time, he didn't send the video to the head of the search.

He sent it straight to Victoria Hale.
