The administrator at St. Mary's counted the cash twice.
Then a third time, slowly, as if the bills might turn back into paper napkins if she looked away.
"Eighteen thousand, four hundred and thirty dollars," she said at last. She looked up at Ethan, at the fresh bruises on his face and the split knuckles he hadn't bothered to hide. "Mr. Cole, I have to ask. Where did this money come from?"
"Does it matter?"
"For a cash payment this size, we're required to—"
"It's legal tender," Ethan said quietly. "My mother is a paying patient now. Not a staff program case. Not a favor anyone can take back." He slid the receipt toward himself. "She stays in the cardiac unit. Her treatment starts again today."
The administrator hesitated. Then she nodded and stamped the form.
Down the hall, an orderly who had sneered at Ethan for three months straight watched the whole thing with his mouth hanging open.

The hospital corridor vanished.
Music. A thousand candles in crystal chandeliers. A ballroom full of wolves and vampires in evening clothes, bowing as he passed.
He was bored. He remembered being bored, terribly bored, the way only someone who had never lost a fight in his life could be bored.
And then a voice behind him, low and amused.
"Do you ever smile, Golden Alpha? Or does it cost extra?"
He turned.
Silver hair, pinned up with pearls. A dark red dress. A young woman with crimson-brown eyes and the most infuriating smile he had ever seen, holding out one gloved hand.
"Dance with me," she said. "If you're brave enough."
No one had ever dared him to do anything.
He took her hand.
***
Ethan came back to himself leaning against the hospital wall, his heart pounding.
The same woman. The same silver hair. But this time she had been smiling at him, and he had felt something in that memory that he had never felt in this life.
He had loved her. Before she killed him, he had loved her more than anything.
"Ethan?"
He turned. His mother was sitting up in her bed through the open door of her room, a fresh IV in her arm, color already returning to her cheeks.
"The nurse says I'm staying," Grace said slowly. "She says the bill is paid. All of it."
"It is."
"How?"
He sat down beside her and took her hand.
"Toby's uncle lent it to me," he lied. "Low interest. Don't worry about it."
Grace studied his face for a long time. She had always known when he was lying. But this time, she only squeezed his hand and said, "Your father would be proud of you."
Ethan looked away so she wouldn't see his eyes.
On the bus to the estate, he texted Lily.
Ethan: Mom's bill is paid. All of it. She's staying.
Three seconds later, his phone exploded with messages.
Lily: WHAT
Lily: HOW
Lily: ETHAN COLE DID YOU ROB A BANK
Ethan: Toby's uncle. Long story. Also, a locksmith is coming at 5 to fix our door. Let him in.
Lily: You are being SO weird this week.
Lily: ...thank you. I love you. Don't tell anyone I said that.
He smiled at his phone all the way to the estate gate. It was the first time he had smiled for real in a very long time.
***
That night, Mr. Graves was waiting for him in the garage of Hale Estate.
"Mrs. Hale wants to see you," the butler said. "Now."
Ethan's stomach dropped.
In fourteen years, Victoria Hale had never asked to see him. Not once. Not when his father died. Not when his mother collapsed in the estate kitchen with her hand over her heart.
He followed Graves up through the servants' stairs, past the silent galleries of paintings and marble, to a set of double doors on the third floor that he had polished a hundred times and never once walked through.
Graves knocked, opened the door, and stepped aside.
Victoria's private study was warm and dim, lit by a fire and a single lamp. Every surface was covered in white roses. Their scent was so thick it made Ethan's eyes water.
Victoria sat behind a desk of black wood, a tablet in her hand.
And in the corner by the window, half in shadow, stood a tall woman in a dark suit and dark glasses. Ms. Vale. She did not turn to look at him.
"Ethan," Victoria said warmly. "Come in. Sit."
He sat.
She turned the tablet around.
On the screen, grainy and dark, a video played: a cage, a crowd, a seven-foot werewolf lifting a slim human by the throat. Then a single punch. A flash of light at the knuckles. The werewolf falling like a tree.
Victoria paused it on Ethan's bloody face.
"Brutus Kane," she said. "Ranked number three in the city's least respectable sport. And you put him on the floor with one hand." She tilted her head. "You've worked in my house since you were a child, Ethan. I've watched you carry trays and wash cars and mop up after my guests. You've never so much as raised your voice." Her eyes glittered. "So tell me. What are you?"
"I don't know what you mean, ma'am."
"Don't you?"
She rose and walked around the desk, slow and graceful, until she stood directly in front of him. Then she reached out and lifted his chin with one cool finger, turning his face toward the lamp, studying him the way a jeweler studies a stone.
The moment her skin touched his, something inside Ethan went cold.
Not fear. Something deeper. Something older. A hatred so vast and so ancient that it didn't feel like his at all, rising from the center of his chest like a wolf lifting its head in the dark.
[Warning: Concealment active. Seal 2 is suppressing Host's aura.]
[Do not react.]
Ethan didn't react. He kept his face blank, his eyes lowered, the way he had been taught since he was six.
Victoria's fingertip lingered on his jaw. Then, abruptly, she flinched. Her free hand went to her own chest, pressing just over her heart.
For one second, her perfect face looked almost frightened.
Then the expression was gone. She let go of him, laughed lightly, and returned to her desk.
"Nothing," she murmured, half to herself. "Just a human. A strange, lucky little human." She sat down. "Do you know I made a bet with Marcus Reed tonight? He's very confident in his son. I told him I wasn't." She smiled. "So you'll fight Derek next week, and you'll win. If you do, your mother's staff program will be restored. Permanently. And you'll start driving for me personally, the way your father did."
Ethan's mouth went dry.
Drive for her. Every day. Alone in a car with the woman whose touch had just woken something murderous inside him.
"And if I lose?"
"Then I lose money." Victoria's smile didn't reach her eyes. "And I don't like losing money, Ethan. Ask anyone."
She waved a hand. "That's all. Ms. Vale will see you out."
***
The woman in the dark glasses walked him to the door without a word.
She moved like water. She smelled like nothing at all; the roses in the room drowned everything. Ethan kept his eyes on the floor, his heart still pounding from Victoria's touch.
At the threshold, as she reached past him to open the door, Ms. Vale spoke for the first time. Her voice was low, barely a breath, meant for him alone.
"Don't win too easily."
Then the door closed behind him, and he was alone in the dark hallway.
Ethan stood very still.
That voice.
He had never heard Ms. Vale speak in fourteen years. He was sure of it. And yet, for one strange second, that quiet, cold voice had sounded impossibly familiar.
Like something he had heard before.
Not with his ears.
Inside his own head.

The System panel flickered once, and went dark.

The uniform still smelled like his father.Ethan found it in the back of the estate's uniform closet on Monday morning, hanging in a plastic bag with a faded name tag pinned to the chest: D. COLE. Chapter 13: Fight Night
The Pit had never been this full.Five hundred werewolves packed the old rail tunnel, standing on crates, hanging from the rusted support beams, pressed so tightly against the cage that the chain-link bowed inward. The air was hot and thick with sweat and beer and the electric smell of wolves on the edge of shifting. Someone had hung a banner from the ceiling, painted in red: REED vs. THE HUMAN.Betting slips fluttered everywhere. The odds on the board read DEREK REED 1:8. Chapter 12: Redline
Selene. The vial was the color of fresh blood. It sat in a padded steel case on Victoria's desk, glowing faintly under the lamp. A label on the side read REDLINE — PROTOTYPE 7 — HALE BIOSCIENCES."Isn't it pretty?" Victoria said.Selene stood by the window, hands folded behind her back. "What does it do?""For about ten minutes, it makes a wolf three times stronger than he has any right to be. Faster. Angrier. Pain stops meaning anything." Victoria lifted the vial and turned it in the light. "After ten minutes, the heart usually gives out. We're still working on that part.""And you're giving it to Derek Reed.""Marcus asked very nicely." Victoria smiled. "He's terrified his son will lose to a human in front of the whole city. It would be the end of the Reed name. So I offered him a little help."Selene kept her voice perfectly flat. "You bet against Derek.""I did." Victoria set the vial back in the case and closed the lid with a soft click. "And I'll probably lose. Unless the Cole b

Four days until the fight."Cole. You're driving tonight."Mr. Graves dropped a set of keys into Ethan's palm at the end of his shift. They belonged to the black armored sedan at the far end of the security garage, the one nobody was allowed to touch."Who am I driving?"Graves's mouth thinned. "Ms. Vale. Eleven o'clock.
