Vaeloric woke up choking on his blood. The black veins had crawled into his throat at night squeezing like a living wire. He rolled off the cot in the war room and slammed his fist on the floor cracking the tile.
"Breathe " he gasped to himself. "Still human. Still in control."
The Matriarch laughed softly in his mind. *Liar.*
Elara burst through the door without knocking healing light already glowing in her hands. Mira followed behind a suppressor cuff in hand. "It spiked again " Elara said, dropping to her knees beside him. "Hold still."
He grabbed her wrist before she could touch him. "How "
" Sixty-eight to seventy-four percent in four hours " Mira answered for her. "Your blood is making it worse. We need to move on the gate today not in three days."
Vaeloric pushed himself up ignoring the pain in his veins. He snapped on the suppressor cuff. Cool relief spread,. It felt weaker than before. "Then we move. Wake everyone. Lira on point with the fire teams. Kael stays chained to me. I want his knowledge close."
Mira hesitated. "Kael says he has coordinates for a hidden lab under the gate. Something about your bloodline."
Elara’s eyes flicked between them. "And you trust him now?"
"I trust no one " Vaeloric said, voice flat. ". I use everyone."
* The column moved out under a sky. Over two hundred living fighters mixed with four hundred raised dead. Mira’s armored vehicles led the way Vaeloric rode in the truck with Kael shackled beside him and Elara watching warily. Lira stood in the bed behind them flames flickering under his command.*
The city ruins slid past like a rotting corpse. Collapsed skyscrapers streets split open by rips, packs of mutated things that scattered at the sight of his army.
Kael spoke quietly almost conversational. "You feel it don’t you? The pull toward the gate. Like going."
"Shut your mouth " Vaeloric said.
". What? You’ll harvest me? Go ahead. I’ll show you the night they took your mother."
Vaeloric’s hand twitched. The mark flared despite the cuff. He forced it down.
* They reached the plaza at dusk. Once a grand government square, a cratered wasteland dominated by a massive black gate twice the size of the stadium one. Red veins pulsed across it like arteries. Doctor Crowe’s forces had already fortified the perimeter with crystal barricades and stitched monstrosities.*
Mira raised binoculars. "He’s waiting for us."
"Obviously " Vaeloric replied. He stepped out of the truck. "Lira burn their flank. Mira, vehicles center. Elara keep the living alive long as possible. I’m going through."
The battle began with force. Lira unleashed a wall of flame that lit the plaza. Mira’s vehicles charged guns blazing. Vaeloric triggered Eclipse Step repeatedly blinking across the battlefield like a ghost harvesting fallen enemies and strengthening his armor with every soul.
Crowe’s voice boomed from loudspeakers. "Welcome home, Valerian Thorne! Your family waited decades for this reunion."
Vaeloric smashed through a crystal barricade. Came face to face with a new horror. Crowe had fused himself with the Sovereign vessel remnants. One arm was crystal and bone the other still human but glowing. His face was metal, smiling.
"You’ve grown " Crowe said. ". So have I."
They clashed. The impact shook the ground. Vaeloric’s flame whip met Crowe’s crystal blade in showers of sparks and black energy. Every blow sent pain through the mark.
"Why me?" Vaeloric shouted between strikes. "Why my blood?"
Crowe laughed. "Because your grandfather volunteered. Thought it would save humanity. Instead it made the key. When the Sovereign arrives your heart will open every gate on the planet at once."
* Twist one came without warning.*
Kael suddenly broke free from his guards and sprinted toward the gate shackles somehow unlocked. "Now!" he screamed.
Mira. Shot two of her own drivers. Their vehicles exploded, taking out dozens of Vaeloric’s raised forces.
"Traitor!" Elara screamed.
Mira smiled coldly as she leveled her rifle at Vaeloric. "Crowe promised me ascension. Sorry, necromancer. You were bait."
Vaeloric teleported behind her with Eclipse Step. Slammed her into the ground. "Useful?" He harvested her partially ripping knowledge and the truth. Mira had never broken from Crowe. The entire alliance was theater.
He raised her on the spot. Her body jerked upright eyes blank. "Join the fight properly this time."
The damage was done. His forces fractured under the surprise attack. Crowe pressed the advantage his fused form growing stronger near the gate.
Vaeloric fought to the gate itself. Kael had reached it first. Pressed both hands to the stone. Red energy flowed into him.
"I was never Crowe’s " Kael shouted over the chaos. "I serve the Sovereign directly. Your blood calls me too brother."
Brother.
The word hit harder than any blade. Vaeloric froze mid-step. Harvest memories from Kael earlier had shown fragments, but not this.
Kael laughed. "Same grandfather. Different mothers. They made two keys in case one failed. I woke up first. Been guiding you here since the crypt."
* Second twist slammed home.*
The gate cracked open. A Sovereign echo stepped through not formed but terrible. Towering, hooded eyes like dying galaxies. It looked at both men. Spoke with a voice that vibrated bones.
*"Blood of Thorne. Two vessels. Only one may carry the mantle."*
The echo raised a hand. Energy lashed out. Struck Kael first. Kael screamed as black veins erupted across his body far faster than Vaeloric’s had spread.
Vaeloric felt the mark inside him surge with hunger. The suppressor cuff shattered completely. Progression jumped to 89%. Pain blinded him. Visions poured in—planets cracked open civilizations fed to maws and him or something wearing his face sitting on a throne made of every soul that ever died.
He dropped to one knee.
Elara fought through the melee to reach him. "Vaeloric! Fight it! Remember the man who died trying to save people!" She poured every ounce of healing into him. For a moment the mark recoiled.
He rose, grabbed her and used her as a shield against a crystal spear from Crowe. The spear pierced her shoulder of his heart. She cried out.
Guilt hit him like water. He harvested a fallen enemy and transferred the vitality to her instantly. "Stay behind me."
* Third twist arrived in the way.*
Lira under his command suddenly jerked and broke free. The raised state cracked. Her eyes cleared with hatred. "You thought you could own me forever?" She unleashed fire that burned both his forces and Crowe’s. "I made my deal with the echo weeks ago!"
She attacked Vaeloric with everything she had.
The battlefield became madness. Brother against brother. Former allies stabbing each other. A partial Sovereign watching like a god. Vaeloric fought on three fronts at once—Crowe’s fused monstrosity Kael drawing power from the gate and Lira’s vengeful flames.
He harvested desperately. Skills, memories, strength. His body grew taller, armored, more monstrous. The line between Ashborn and something worse blurred.
Kael reached for him across the chaos. "Join me brother! We can rule together under them. No more pain. No more weakness."
For one second Vaeloric considered it. The desperation, the constant betrayals, the weight of every death on his hands. It would be easier.
Elara’s voice cut through. She was bleeding, barely standing, but still healing him. "Don’t you dare. You died a human. Stay one."
He. Charged Kael. Their clash was personal and brutal. Same bloodline, same training echoes, same hunger for power. Kael fought with gate energy. Vaeloric answered with everything the dead had given him.
In the end Vaeloric drove a bone spear through Kael’s chest. Harvested deeper than ever before.
*[Legendary Bloodline Fragment Absorbed. True Heritage Unlocked.]*
Memories flooded him completely. The labs. His grandfather’s deal to save a dying world. His mother’s escape attempt. The system choosing him because he died with intent—trying to save others. The Sovereigns hated that purity. It was the flaw in their key.
Kael gasped his last. "You… still lose…"
The Sovereign echo laughed. *"Purity is weakness. Come. Take your throne."*
It reached for Vaeloric.
He triggered every ability at once. Sovereign Dominion Pulse. Eclipse Step. Flame Dominion. Bone Armor at maximum. He poured the harvested bloodline power into the gate itself trying to overload it.
The explosion threw everyone flat. The partial Sovereign. Retreated halfway through the gate. Crowe was blasted backward critically wounded again. Lira was thrown into a burning vehicle.
Vaeloric stood in the center chest heaving. Mark progression hit 96%. Four percent, from losing himself completely.
Elara crawled to him. "We have to shut it down. Right now. Use the blood they want against them."
He looked at her bleeding shoulder at the hundreds of bodies around them at his own hands with black veins. For the time since the crypt real fear hit him. Not of dying. Of what he was turning into.
Crowe’s broken voice echoed from the rubble. "It’s late Thorne. The first true Sovereign arrives tomorrow at dawn. Your blood will help make it happen."
Mira stood waiting for orders still raised and obedient. Lira groaned, badly hurt but alive. The gate pulsed weaker. Was not closed.
Vaeloric made up his mind. "Elara keep me stable for long as you can. We will fall back to the stadium. Tomorrow we make our stand. I will not open the gates for them."
As they retreated under the cover of night carrying the wounded and dragging prisoners Vaeloric felt the mark whispering promises of power of an end to betrayal of a throne that no one could take away.
He looked at Elara’s hopeful face and wondered how long he could keep saying no.
Back, at the stadium the survivors looked at him differently now. Some saw a hero. Others saw the monster growing inside him.
He stood on the roof alone later staring at the glowing gate. Ash fell softly.
"Four percent " he whispered. " Four percent left."
The Matriarch spoke one time that night. *When the Sovereign comes you will choose. King of graves…. God of ash.*

Dawn of the eclipse
Vaeloric gripped the edge of the stadium roof tightly that the concrete cracked under his fingers. The dark veins on his neck and jaw were throbbing in time with the gates heartbeat. Dawn was just minutes away. The sky had turned a angrier red like an open wound ready to spill its blood."Come on " Vaeloric muttered through clenched teeth. "Just hold on."Elara stood behind him her hands pressed against his back pouring all her energy into the fight against the mark. Sweat was running down her face. "Its fighting me harder now. Ninety-six percent. Vaeloric, if it hits one hundred percent..."Vaeloric cut her off. His voice was rougher than he meant it to be. He turned to catch her eyes. "You know what happens " he said. "You should be downstairs with the others. If this goes wrong I do not want you near me."Elara shook her head stubborn. "I am not leaving you Vaeloric. You are still the man who pulled strangers out of burning buildings. I saw those memories when I healed you. Do not

Veins of Crimson Doubt
Vaeloric stood over Elara his bone blade pressed against her throat. The war room was a mess it smelled like smoke and blood and sweat. Elara was on her knees her eyes were red from crying. She looked determined.Vaeloric said "Talk" in a voice. "You let Lira out of her cell you gave her back her sword. Why did you do that?"Elara swallowed the blade moved a little when she did. "I saw what was happening to you Vaeloric. I saw the veins under your skin like worms. The Sovereigns told me to save the people who can still be saved."Vaeloric laughed it was a bitter sound. "Save them by giving my place to cultists and traitors? Look around see what is happening."The room was a mess there were broken windows, blood on the carpet and broken furniture. Outside Vaelorics people were working they were quiet they were piling up bodies. The people who were still alive looked empty like they had given up.Elaras voice was shaking. Shadows in the Bloodline
Vaeloric slammed Lira against the wall of the holding room. The chains were loud in the light. "You said we had nine days until the first Sovereign arrives. Start talking. I will hurt you right now."Lira smiled, her lip bleeding. Her face was sweaty and covered in ash. Her eyes still had that cold fire. "You think chaining me up makes you safe? The mark is already inside you Thane. I can smell it."Elara stood by the door her arms crossed. She looked like she wanted to help Lira to shut her up. "This is pointless. She will say anything to hurt you."Vaeloric told Elara to be quiet. He put his hand on Liras forehead. Took some of her memories. He saw pictures of hidden altars and people in robes chanting under moons. He also saw a face that made his stomach drop. It was Kael, standing beside Doctor Crowe in a lab coat laughing.Vaeloric pulled fast. "Kael was not just working for Crowe. He was working with him from the beginning."Lira laughed quietly. "It took you enough. Crowe does
The Gate That Whispered Back
Vaeloric kicked open the maintenance door and looked down the stairs into the darkness. "Lights " he said.Kael turned on a flashlight he had found. The light was not very strong. Only made a small hole in the darkness. "This feels wrong. The Matriarch is pushing you hard " Kael said.Vaeloric started down the stairs anyway. He made a suit of bone armor to protect himself. Every step he took made a noise. Kael, Elara and four of Vaelorics guards followed him. They had left Lira chained upstairs with some guards to watch her. Vaeloric did not trust her because she was being too quiet. The air downstairs was cold and damp. It smelled like stone and something sharp like the smell you get just before lightning strikes.Elaras voice was shaking a little. "People are still scared upstairs. Some want to leave. Others say you are no better than the cults."Vaeloric said, "Let them talk. Talking does not make armies."They reached the bottom of the stairs. A big room opened up in front of them
Stadium of Ash and Flame
Vaeloric raised his hand. The column stopped moving. "There is an ambush ahead. Three snipers are on the overpass."Kael dropped to one knee beside him. Looked through some binoculars they found in a wrecked police car. "Are you sure? I do not see them."Vaeloric said "Remember what the last rifleman saw" and that was it.Before Kael could say anything a shot was fired. The bullet hit the bone titans shoulder. Vaelorics people ran to hide behind burned-out cars and fallen streetlights.Vaeloric said "Fire "His marksmen. Three people from the night before. Lifted their rifles and started shooting. One sniper. Fell from the overpass.Liras voice came from the walls two blocks away. "Thane you brought your people to my place? That is nice."Vaeloric stepped out into the open. Some bone armor formed on his shoulders and chest. "This stadium belongs to the dead now Voss.. You will get hurt."Lira laughed. "You talk big for someone hiding behind people.. Take it if you can."Elara moved up
