The stone wall groaned, a sound like grinding teeth, as Freecs slumped against the damp cavern floor. His chest felt like it had been crushed by a war hammer, and his vision was swimming in shades of grey. Above him, the shadows of the elite party retreated, their heavy boots clanking rhythmically against the stone.

"Is he still breathing?" a voice echoed. It was Seris, the party’s Radiant Knight, her tone as cold as the dungeon’s breath.

Freecs tried to call out, but his throat tasted like hot iron.

"Doesn't matter," Valerius, the celebrated hero, replied, his voice dripping with casual apathy. "He was F-rank. Expendable. The beast needs a snack to keep it occupied while we reach the treasure vault."

"A shame," Seris sighed, not turning back. "He was decent at carrying the packs."

"He was a tool," Valerius snapped. "Tools break. Leave him."

The footsteps faded into the distance. Freecs reached out, his blood-slicked fingers scraping the dirt. They left me. He’d spent three years worshipping them, polishing Valerius’s armor, praying for a crumb of their glory.

"Still... alive?" Freecs wheezed to the empty dark.

[System Initializing.]

A translucent blue box flickered into existence, hovering over his shattered ribs. Freecs blinked, his brain struggling to process the light.

"What is that? A hallucination? Great. Dying and going crazy at the same time."

[Host identified: Freecs. Rank: F. Survival probability: 0.01%. Initiating 'Hero Hunter System'.]

"System? The hell are you talking about? I’m bleeding out here!"

[Healing process initiated. Cost: One 'Hero' life. Target: Valerius the Radiant.]

Freecs stared at the text. His heartbeat stuttered. "Valerius? You want me to kill the man I just spent my life savings to follow?"

[Correction: Valerius is the primary obstacle to your continued existence. Do you accept the terms?]

"If I don’t... I die?"

[Correct. Current HP: 1%.]

Freecs let out a wet, rattling laugh. "You’re twisted. I love it. Fine. Whatever. Just stop the pain."

A surge of liquid fire erupted in his veins. The agony in his chest didn't just fade—it evaporated, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity that made his teeth ache. He pushed himself up, his muscles rippling with a newfound, unnatural strength.

"This feels... wrong. Too strong."

[Skill Unlocked: Hero’s Blind Spot. You are invisible to the senses of those you designate as 'Target'.]

Freecs stood, wincing as he tested his legs. The dungeon groaned again, the ceiling beginning to shower dust onto his shoulders. The exit was blocked, but a shimmering red line snaked along the floor, cutting through the shadows like a vein of magma.

"You’re showing me a way out?" Freecs whispered, following the line.

[Proceed. Your first mark is within reach.]

He moved with a fluid grace he’d never possessed before. The dungeon collapse had turned the hallway into a deathtrap, but the system guided his feet, stepping over gaps that should have been fatal.

He rounded a corner and saw them. Valerius and Seris were standing before a massive, sealed door, frantically trying to trigger the mechanism.

"The seal isn't breaking!" Seris shouted, her voice tight with panic. "The dungeon is caving in on us, Valerius!"

"Shut up! I’m trying to use my mana pulse!" Valerius slammed his fist against the door.

Freecs watched from the shadows, his heart cold. He could see them, but they didn't even glance his way. It was as if he were a ghost.

"They really don't see me," Freecs muttered.

[Hero’s Blind Spot is active. You are a predator, Freecs. Strike.]

Freecs stepped out of the darkness. He picked up a discarded iron spear near a pile of rubble. It felt balanced, light. He caught Seris’s eye, but she looked right through him, focused entirely on the locked door.

"Valerius, did you feel that?" Seris asked, shivering.

"Feel what? Just focus on the door!"

"I felt… like someone was breathing on my neck."

Freecs leaned in, his face inches from her ear. "I am."

Seris spun around, her eyes widening in confusion. "Who’s there?"

"Nobody," Valerius spat, turning around. "You’re losing your mind. We need to leave."

Freecs didn't hesitate. He thrust the spear, not at Valerius, but at the pressure point in the wall that held the door’s locking mechanism. He knew exactly where to strike—the system had highlighted it in a glowing gold pulse.

Clang.

The door groaned open, but the impact sent a tremor through the room. The ceiling finally gave way, a massive slab of stone plummeting directly toward Valerius.

"Valerius, watch out!" Seris screamed.

Valerius raised his shield, but the system’s interface flashed in Freecs’s eyes.

[Critical Point Detected: Shield Hinge.]

Freecs lunged, driving his spear into the exact spot on Valerius's legendary shield where the magic tethered. The shield shattered like glass.

The stone slab slammed into Valerius, pinning him to the floor. The hero’s screams were sharp, desperate, and pathetic.

"My leg! Seris, help me!"

Seris stood paralyzed, staring at the empty air where Freecs stood. "How... how did you break his shield?"

Freecs walked up to the pinned hero, the tip of his spear resting on Valerius's throat. "It wasn't that hard. Your armor is just as cheap as your morals."

Valerius looked up, his face contorted in shock as the 'blind spot' effect faded. "Freecs? You? You’re supposed to be dead!"

"I was," Freecs whispered, a dark grin spreading across his face. "But then I realized I was just a tool. And tools can be repurposed."

[Mission Complete: First Ambush. Reward: Experience Points. Evolution: Assassin.]

Freecs looked at the system screen that bloomed in the air. A new list scrolled down, glowing with a malevolent, pulsating light.

"Is this it?" Freecs asked the system.

[Mission List Updated. Target 2: The City Captain.]

Freecs looked at the terrified hero beneath his boot and then up at the dark, collapsing ceiling. "A captain, huh? Guess I’m getting a promotion."

Vivina’s golden aura sputtered like a dying candle, casting frantic, jumping shadows against the damp brickwork of the sewer. The air grew instantly heavier, smelling of ozone and rot, as the armored inquisitors closed their ring tighter around the runoff junction.“My aura is failing, Freecs!” Vivina shouted, her voice tight with exhaustion as she deflected a plunging halberd with a screech of shearing metal. “I can't hold them off much longer!”“Look at their visors!” Freecs yelled back, ducking beneath a sweeping chain weapon that tore chunks of masonry from the wall. “They aren’t breathing, Vivina! They’re pulsing in sync with the shadow-beast! Every time you flare your light, the construct grows denser!”“What are you talking about? It’s reacting to us!” she snapped, executing a desperate backflip to avoid a wave of solidifying darkness that instantly crystallized the puddles beneath her boots.“No, it’s reacting to you!” Freecs realized, his mind racing as he recalled the prison

"Don't tell me you're planning on dying in a sewer," Freecs shouted, parrying a downward strike that rattled his teeth. "That’s a pathetic way to go."Vivina ducked under a whirling blade, her golden aura scorching the damp brickwork. "I've had worse shifts, Freecs! Just watch your left!""My left is fine! It’s the dozen guys behind you that are the problem!""Then stop talking and swing your blade!"Freecs vaulted over a pipe, his boots splashing in the grime. He caught an inquisitor’s wrist, twisted until the bone snapped, and shoved him into the path of another. "You realize we’re completely outnumbered, right? There’s literally no way out of this pipe.""There is if you stop whining and start listening!" she yelled, thrusting her blade into an attacker's chest. "We need to clear the shaft! Move to the center!""The center? You want me to stand in the middle of a firing squad?""I want you to be the bait! Just for a second!""Bait? You want me to be the bait?""You're the glitch, a

The shadow monster lashed out, its limbs like jagged obsidian blades. Freecs ducked, the air whistling as a claw pulverized the stone where his head had been a heartbeat prior."This thing is solidifying!" Freecs yelled, rolling across the cold floor to regroup with Vivina."It’s not just a projection!" she shouted back, deflecting a heavy blow with her glowing sword. "It’s a construct of the Council’s spite!"Freecs lunged toward the cell, his dagger biting into the lock mechanism. "Old man, get out! Now!"The prisoner stumbled forward, his chains clattering like dead leaves. "You can’t win by fighting the shadow! You have to starve the parasite!""Starve it?" Freecs barked, parrying a strike from the shadow-beast. "How do you suggest we do that while it’s busy trying to eviscerate us?""The System feeds on glory!" the old man wheezed, clutching his chest. "Every time a 'hero' dies for their cause, the energy ripples back to the Source! It’s not a tool, you fools—it’s a harvester!"V

The city of Oakhaven was a graveyard of lights. Every torch was extinguished, and the streets were patrolled by armored inquisitors with glowing, violet visors.Freecs adjusted his velvet collar, the silk itching against his neck. Beside him, Vivina looked dangerously out of place in a floor-length evening gown that clearly belonged to someone much smaller."Stop pulling at the neckline," she hissed, her voice barely audible. "You look like you’re trying to strangle yourself.""I am," Freecs muttered, keeping his head down as they approached the North Gate checkpoint. "If this corset doesn't kill me, the guards definitely will. Who wears this stuff? It’s basically torture.""It’s high-society fashion, you idiot. Just stop hunching. You’re a lord’s son tonight, remember?""A lord’s son who smells like a sewer and has an assassin’s dagger taped to his thigh? Perfect.""Lord Valerius the Third. My cousin from the southern provinces," she added, catching his eye with a warning glare. "And

The scout lunged, his movements fluid and unnervingly fast. Freecs barely dodged the first strike, the blade whistling past his ear and carving a deep gouge into the cave wall."Stay back, Vivina!" Freecs yelled, parrying a second, bone-jarring blow."I’m not a statue, Freecs! I’m helping!" She slid beneath the scout’s guard, her own blade flashing like sunlight in the dark."That's his blind spot!" Freecs shouted, spotting the flicker of purple energy around the scout's ribs. "Strike now!"Vivina didn't hesitate. She drove her sword home, but the scout laughed—a dry, raspy sound—as he twisted his body, absorbing the hit. He kicked Freecs squarely in the chest, sending him flying back into the stone floor."You’re fighting like a pair of amateurs," the scout sneered, his voice distorting with that unnatural, layered hiss. "The Council sends their regards. And they specifically asked for your heads."Freecs gasped for air, his vision blurring. "The Council? Since when do they send scou

The explosion of light hadn’t destroyed the Architect; it had merely blinded it long enough for them to vanish into the sewers, leaving the ruined tannery to collapse in a heap of splintered wood and phantom fire. Now, deep in the damp silence of a mountain grotto miles from the city, the adrenaline was finally bleeding out, replaced by the stinging reality of their injuries.Freecs slumped against the mossy wall, his chest heaving. Vivina sat a few feet away, her golden armor shattered and discarded in pieces across the damp stone. She looked less like a Saint and more like a survivor."You’re bleeding, Freecs," she said, her voice unusually soft in the cramped space."It’s just a scratch," he wheezed, pressing a hand to his side. "You look like you went five rounds with a meat grinder.""I took worse hits during the initiation trials," she replied, picking at a jagged tear in her tunic. "At least then, the enemy didn't have tentacles.""True. The Council’s flair for the dramatic is
