6. New Skill activated

We crash into the water but i don't come up. I can't swim. I've never been in the ocean. I can't breathe. I open my mouth to scream for help, a wrong move that causes the water to flood into my system.

A tab appears in front me and a beep alerts me that spix is now active. “Warning: Water monster detected. You have received a task from the system. Earn 10,000 points for killing a water sprite. Accept or decline?“

Water sprite? What the hell is a water sprite?

Something wraps around my leg and tugs me down. I watch the light from the house fade into the distance as i am dragged to the bottom of ocean. I look down and try to kick the tentacles around my ankle but the sea creature only tightens its grip around me. I spot a rock speeding towards me and dodge it before it hits my head. I look up to see who had thrown the rock amd there's a woman with seaweed for hair, her skin is green and when she opens her mouth, i see a rows of sharp teeth lined all the way to the back of her throat.

A tab appears over head with her information.

TYPE: SEA SIREN

LEVEL 3: WATER SPRITE MONSTER

Her eyes turn black and she lets out the most blood curdling, ear bursting, shrilling shriek I've ever heard and a ball of green energy shoots straight for me. The tentacled monster hurls me towards the sea siren and her energy blast. I collide with it and I'm blown back to the rocks.

Energy surges through my body when i open my eyes, I'm glowing. Suddenly, i can breathe. A tab appears in front of me.

“Congratulations, new skill aquired. Water breathing will now be added to your skills. Do you wish to earn 10,000 points for killing a water monster? Accept or Decline?“

I click on accept and more energy surges through me. A different tab appears and spix speaks. “You are too weak to perform this task as a player. Would you like to turn on host mode?“

“Host mode? Yes” i say.

“Host mode activated. Ayra's beserk will now take over” Spix says and a sword of light appears in front of me. I reach for it and the moment it's in my hand, i feel like this has always been mine.

I look up at the sea siren and her malicious grin is gone, replaced by a frightful stare. Her mouth is agape when she she realises i am no ordinary player.

“Took you long enough” A different voice says. A familiar voice that takes me back to the moment i died. I realise it's coming from the glowing sword. Before i could reply, the siren throws another blast of energy at me. The sword cut clean through it like butter. Her mouth falls open and she decides to flee.

“Go after her or you'll lose your points” She says and i charge straight for her. The tentacled monster emerges and tries to drag me down. I swing my sword and slice through three tentacles, it grows right back and four more strike me from behind. It pushes me away while its master makes a run for it.

I tighten my grip around my sword and i can feel all the energy in my body flow to the sword. The sword lights up with a bright light and I hear the crackling of thunder.

“Let's finish this once and for all, host” The familiar voice says and i couldn't agree more.

I draw back the sword and i swing it towards the monsters. Lightning strikes the ocean and the blast from the sword slices through the sea creature and its fleeing master. I watch the lifeless bodies of the monsters sink to dark depths of the ocean.

“Who are you?“ I finally ask the new voice.

“Did you lose your memory on the way here or is my voice that hard to recognise?“ She asks.

Not at all, I'd recognise the sultry sound of her voice anywhere. It's the girl from the hospital. The one who killed me and sent me here.

“Why did you send me here?“

She laughs lightly. “Come find me and I'll tell you.“

“Aren't you in the human world?“

“We've never been in the human world, Knox. Find me, let's escape the system together” she says as a red tab appears in front of me.

What the hell is this? What kind of immense power is this? I ask myself. I watch as the numbers start to fade back to the low level stats it was at the beginning. The sword disappears and so does my energy.

“Wait, come back.“ I call for Ayra but there's no answer.

The tab changes and Spix returns. “Congratulations, host. You've received 10,000 points. These can be spent at the store.“ I close the tab and swim to the surface.

“Where the hell have you been? I thought you drowned” Kara asks. Her hair is drenched with water and she looks disheveled and out of breath like she had taken several dives.

“I learned a skill. I can swim now” i tell her. She looks at me like I'm crazy but she doesn't ask any further questions. Kara swims to the shore and i follow after her, she kicks off her shoes and takes off her jacket.

“You can't swim. You can't fish. You have no powers. You're lucky you didn't get eaten by a sea siren. You're an odd case, you know? Usually, new souls have some power they gained from their past lives. You have none. So you lived your whole life without achieving anything? That's odd” Kara says once we got a fire going and she caught a few fishes we could eat.

My eyes drop to the crackling wood. My whole miserable life flashes through my eyes and disappoint settles in at the thought of it. “I didn't exactly do much in my past life” i tell her.

“So what can you do?“

“Eat, sleep and repeat.“ I look up at Kara. There's a fish stick in her hand and she's giving me the Are-you-crazy look again. She probably thinks i was some lazy neet without a social life ho stayed locked in playing video games. “I was sick…”

Her expressions softens into pity but i don't complain about it. It was a miserable life, I'd pity me too.

“All my life. I couldn't move or talk but i could hear everything that happened around me. Humans aren't their best selves when they think no one else is watching… all the things they said. I didn't meet a lot of people. All i ever knew was test tubes, laboratories, the four white walls of my ward and that dreadful beeping noise“ I close my eyes and lean back on the rock behind me.

“That sounds like a miserable life” i hear her say

“That's why i have to finish this game. Someone gave me a second chance and i intend to use it well. What about you? What was your life like before you came here?” She doesn't respond so i open my eyes and she's glaring at the flames.

“I wouldn't know. The system is all I've ever known” She responds and i remember the tab that had appeared before we fell into the water.

I want to ask what it means but the look on her face tells me she doesn't want to talk about it.

“So what are you going to do now?“ I ask.

“I'm looking for someone” her face lights up at the thought of this 'someone'.

“Ayra?“ I guess. She looks at me with a raised brow. I can't tell her Ayra communicated with me while in the water that would only lead her to suspect that I'm a host.

“I overheard you talking about her with that fire guy” i say instead.

“I'd stay away from those people if i were you. I don't know what kind of agreement you had with Ravena but she's bad news. Get some rest. I'll take you to someone who could help you level up in the morning“ She says, rising to her feet.

“Who is she to you? Ayra.“ I ask because i just have to know. If Ayra wants me to find her and Kara is looking for her then our paths would have to entwine.

Kara pats the dust of her clothes and turns to walk away. “She's my sister” she says before wandering off.

Sister? Could souls have families in Eden Bizarre? Could i have one?
