CHAPTER 3

At that moment every person in that room locked their eyes on Rose. The air felt thick with waiting. What was she going to say? The answer seemed so obvious it wasn't even worth thinking about. A King of War stood ready to marry her. Why would anyone pick differently?

Before Rose could open her mouth, Alex's voice cut through the silence.

“Rose, what we had was real love. You know that. Even Grandfather Lawrence knew it too. He saw something special between us and gave us his blessing to get married. It didn't matter that I had no money or power or fancy title. He looked past all of that because he saw what really mattered between the two of us.”

Then Alex paused and took a breath. His eyes never left Rose's face.

“I left for years. I just found out we have a daughter together. You have every single right to be angry with me. I understand that. But I need to tell you something true right now. Picking any one of these military men would be the biggest mistake of your life. There is nothing they can offer you that I can't give you myself. And besides all that, I know I can be a better father to our daughter than any of them could ever hope to be.”

Alex's words hit the room like a bomb going off. People started yelling and talking over each other. They couldn't wrap their heads around what he just said. Some regular man with no rank claiming he was just as good as trained military commanders? The whole thing sounded like a bad joke.

Mrs. Lawrence felt her blood boil over, she couldn't believe Alex still has the Audacity to see those nonsense words in front of everyone here.

Immediately she pointed her finger at Alex like a weapon.

“How dare you stand there and try to mess with Rose's head after everything you put her through! You disappeared for five whole years and left her alone with your baby girl. Now you show up saying you didn't know about your own daughter? Where were you all this time? Hiding in a cave somewhere? You don't get to come back now and ruin her one chance at having a good life!”

Her voice kept getting louder with each word. Her hands shook at her sides. There was no way in hell she would watch Rose throw away this golden opportunity. All those women in her social groups had treated her like dirt for the past five years. They whispered behind her back and left her out of their fancy parties, business meetings, ladies state development meetings. But if Rose married Henry King tonight, everything would change. She could walk into any room in Lakewood with her head held high and watch all those gossiping women eat their own words.

Master Lawrence raised his voice too.

“Keep your mouth shut, Alex, and let Rose speak for herself. This has nothing to do with you anymore. And who do you think you are claiming to be better than every military man in this room? Do you even understand what their titles mean? Do you know who you're standing next to right now?”

Everyone waited for Alex to back down and slink away with his tail between his legs. But instead, his voice came out calm and steady.

“I know exactly who every single person here is. I know their ranks and what they've done. And I'm telling you right now that I am more of a man than any of them will ever be. But like i said, Master Lawrence, Rose gets to make the final choice here.”

Alex's calm words made Lewis Brown's face turn red with anger. He couldn't stand listening to this nonsense for one more second.

“What the hell makes you think you're better than any of us? You're nobody special. Just some guy with no rank and no respect. We're the ones out there every single day keeping all these people safe from those demons trying to kill everyone.”

Heads bobbed up and down all around the room. People murmured their agreement with Lewis. He was speaking the truth that everyone could see.

Immediately Lewis took several steps closer to Alex. This was his perfect chance to show everyone in the room exactly why he deserved Rose more than anyone else.

“Now the other head commanders here have more stars than me, and I give them the respect they've earned. But my family controls over a hundred soldiers ready to fight at any moment. That's real power right there. Having one star or five stars above me doesn't mean much when you don't have an army backing you up.”

He turned to look at the crowd behind him.

“Ask anyone in this room right now. Wake them up in the middle of the night and they'll tell you the same thing. A man with a hundred trained soldiers under his command is worth way more than some five star head commander sitting behind a desk.”

The crowd ate up every word Lewis said. People whispered to each other about how they had no idea he commanded so many men. This changed everything. Now the real fight was between Lewis and Henry King.

At that moment Lewis felt his chest puff out with pride when he heard all the support from the room. But then Alex spoke again, and Lewis almost couldn't believe what came out of his mouth.

“You're right about one thing. The only person here who has a hundred men under his command is King of War Henry King. He's the only one in this room who outranks you.”

Lewis had to bite his lip to keep from grinning like a fool. This nobody just handed him the best advertising he could have asked for. Now Rose would see exactly why he was better than all the other head commanders standing around. He had real power, real soldiers, real influence.

His confidence shot through the roof. Rose didn't seem too happy with the way Henry King had walked in here acting like he owned the place. And Henry hadn't even bothered bringing any gifts, like he thought just showing up was enough of a prize. Lewis doubted However Rose would pick someone who treated her like she should feel lucky just to be noticed.

The room went dead quiet when Rose's voice cut through all the tension.

“I have made my decision.”

Lily's answer did not require any deliberation. She raised her small arm and pointed directly at Rose with the uncomplicated certainty of someone who has known the answer to this question for a very long time and is simply being asked it for the first time.“Mommy,” she said. “It's because of mommy.”She looked at Alex with eyes that were serious in the way that children are serious when they are saying something they have thought about deeply and privately and have never said out loud before.“I want to protect her,” Lily continued, and her voice was steady and small and absolute. “I don't want anybody to hurt her. I don't want anybody to touch her or say bad things to her or make her cry when she thinks I'm not watching.” She paused. “I know that if I join the military I can protect her. So that's why.”The hall had thinned around them but the few people still nearby went quietly still.Rose made a sound that was not quite a word. She lowered herself to Lily's level without think

Alex stood there with the smile of a man who had been surprised by something and was not trying to hide it even slightly.“The military,” he said, and the word came out wrapped in something between disbelief and pure delight. “She chose the military.” He shook his head slowly, still watching Lily move to the front of the hall with her small back straight and her steps measured and deliberate. “Of all the things she could have chosen. Of all the directions she could have gone.” He laughed under his breath, soft and genuine. “How does a child her age fall in love with it this completely? To the point where she goes school, finds a uniform, puts it on, and walks out in front of all these people like she was born wearing it?”He was not asking anyone in particular. He was just saying it out loud because it needed to be said out loud.Rose watched their daughter reach the front of the hall and turn to face the audience with an expression of calm, focused seriousness that looked, in this

The anchor of the program cleared her throat with the careful deliberateness of someone attempting to draw a clean line between what the evening had been and what it was now going to be.“I want to begin by apologizing,” she said, and her voice carried the genuine discomfort of someone who means it. “For the disruption. For everything that happened in this hall tonight that should not have happened. That is not who we are, or at the very least, it is not who we intend to be going forward.” She straightened her notes. “But that is behind us now, and what is in front of us is what we actually came here for.” She looked up with something that was working its way toward a smile. “So it is my absolute pleasure to invite the one student who has not yet had the opportunity to share her career path with us this evening.”She paused for effect.“A round of applause, please, for Little Alex Lily.”The applause came warm and immediate and genuine.Alex turned. He looked at Rose with an expre

He understood now, with his whole body, what he had walked into. And he understood, with equal completeness, how fortunate he was to be walking out of it with everything intact.Alex let the silence conclude itself naturally and then he looked toward the front of the hall.“I think,” he said, and his voice had returned to the easy unhurried register of a man at the end of an evening that had gone more or less as expected, “that it is time for my daughter to show everyone what she prepared.”The owner turned toward the anchor of the ceremony with an expression that had entirely shed whatever remained of its earlier composure and replaced it with something considerably more urgent.“What exactly are you waiting for?” he said sharply. “Why are you still standing there? Commence the program. Immediately.”Alex walked back through the hall with the same unhurried ease he had carried all evening and settled into the seat beside Rose with the comfortable finality of a man returning from a b

The owner of the school turned from Rose and walked toward Alex with the deliberate unhurried steps of a man who had one more thing to address before this evening could be considered properly closed. He stopped in front of him.And then, to the quiet astonishment of everyone watching, he bowed his head. Not a performative tilt. Not the shallow nod of someone going through a social motion. A genuine lowering of the head from a man who clearly did not do it often and was doing it now because he believed it was owed.“I owe you an apology,” he said. “A real one. Not on behalf of the parents in this room, though that is also necessary. On behalf of this school and on behalf of my family.” He kept his eyes level and his voice clear. “Your daughter has been enduring things in this school that she should never have been subjected to. Your wife has carried humiliations in this building that no parent should ever have to carry. And the institution that my brother and I built, that we poured

The silence that answered him was complete and it was unanimous. Not one voice. Not one raised hand. Not one person in those rows who had spent the evening nodding along to General David's every word found it within themselves to locate an objection now. They looked at each other and they looked at the floor and they looked at the middle distance and not one of them looked at the owner of the school with anything resembling disagreement. He let the silence confirm itself for a full fifteen seconds."Then it is settled," he said simply, and turned to face Rose directly. "You are the new PTA president of this school. As of this moment and with no objection from this parent body." The corners of his mouth moved into something that was almost warm. "A round of applause, please."The clapping started slowly, the way applause does when a room is still recalibrating, and then it built, and then it became something genuine because even in rooms full of complicated people there are moments wh
