He felt guilty immediately. It hit him like a physical blow. His chest tightened, breath breaking as the reality of what he’d done caught up all at once.He cried, quiet at first, then harder, and wrapped his arms around Adams, holding him as if letting go would shatter them both.“I’m here,” he choked out, burying his face into Adams’s shoulder. “I’m here.”Adams didn’t pull away. He held him back just as tightly, one hand gripping the back of his jacket, the other pressed flat between his shoulder blades. The world trembled around them, metal groaning, alarms screaming, but for a heartbeat, that was all that existed.“Four minutes, fifty seconds!” Erica shouted over the noise.A concussive blast tore through the chamber as Erica fired again, sparks exploding from the exposed motherboard.The final barrier gave way with a shriek of tortured metal. Energy surged, unstable and blinding, and the portal snapped open, an oval of violent light clawing at the air, dragging debris toward it.

The void convulsed as a new authority signature slammed into existence.STOP! It hesitated... as if unsure whether Baxter Holmes was allowed to exist anymore. Blue fragments of fractured authority coalesced in front of Aleric, stitching together into a half-formed silhouette. Baxter emerged slowly, his body now fully physical, no longer data. His super suit armor was completely broken and destroyed. His eyes burned with cold, and desperate intelligence.
