When I walked out of the banquet hall, it was still morning.
The streets were not crowded yet. I walked without direction, my hands buried deep inside my pockets.
Sonia’s words kept replaying in my head.
“You embarrassed me in front of everyone, and I didn’t expect that from you.”
Each time I remembered the look in her eyes when she said it, something inside me broke painfully. I had faced ridicule my entire life without blinking, but hearing it from her felt different.
It was not the insult that hurt. It was the dismissal. The way she had looked at me as if I truly was nothing.
I stopped at the corner of the street and let out a slow breath.
“If only you knew who I truly am,” I muttered to myself quietly. “If you knew what I gave up, what I ran from, you would not have spoken to me that way.”
A faint, bitter smile touched my lips.
“I healed you,” I whispered under my breath. “And this is how you see me.”
Before I could sink deeper into my thoughts, dark clouds suddenly rolled overhead. Within seconds, rain began to fall, first as a light drizzle, then heavier. The cool drops soaked into my hair and coat, but I did not move. I barely noticed.
Then, out of nowhere, the low, smooth soound of luxury engines filled the street.
Three black Mercedes-Maybach vehicles turned the corner in perfect formation and came to a stop directly across from me. Their surfaces gleamed even under the rain.
I stared at them.
“No…” I breathed.
The doors of the first car opened almost instantly. Six men in tailored black suits stepped out with synchronized precision. One held a large umbrella. Another carried an extra thick overcoat.
They moved quickly toward me.
When they reached me, they stopped in unison and bowed deeply.
“Sir.”
I slapped my forehead.
“You have got to be kidding me,” I muttered.
Before I could say anything else, the door of the last car opened. A tall man stepped out, adjusting his glasses as he hurried toward me. His suit was slightly more distinguished than the others. I recognized him immediately.
“Mr. Laurent,” I said flatly.
He was the personal assistant to the President of Cardinia.
He stopped in front of me and bowed respectfully despite the rain soaking his shoulders. “Medical God,” he said formally, “we have finally found you.”
I closed my eyes briefly.
Of course they had.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my tone calm but irritated.
Mr. Laurent gestured subtly toward the cars. “We were sent by the President himself.”
“I know exactly who sent you,” I replied. “And I know exactly where you came from.”
Rain continued pouring around us. One of the men tried to hold the umbrella over my head, but I stepped slightly away.
“You should not have come,” I said quietly.
Mr. Laurent looked genuinely troubled. “Sir, Cardinia is in crisis. A pandemic has broken out. The hospitals are overwhelmed. Ever since you disappeared, the medical council has struggled. We need you back.”
I let out a slow breath.
“I told all of you that I am dead to that world,” I said calmly. “I left Cardinia for a reason.”
“Sir,” he pressed desperately, “people are dying. The President has assigned five hundred billion dollars to your name. Three private mansions have been purchased for you, each worth over one hundred million dollars. The entire nation is ready to welcome you back as a hero.”
“I am not interested,” I said without hesitation.
The men exchanged uneasy glances.
“Medical God,” Mr. Laurent continued, lowering his voice, “you are Cardinia’s greatest asset. You are our pride. The people still believe you will return.”
“I am no longer Cardinian,” I said firmly. “I chose to leave. I chose this life.”
He looked confused. “This life? Sir… you are walking alone in the rain.”
“I have a wife,” I replied. “I have responsibilities here.”
The word wife felt heavy in my mouth.
Mr. Laurent’s eyes softened slightly. “Then bring her with you. We will arrange everything.”
“You do not understand,” I said quietly. “I did not leave only for a new beginning. I left to survive.”
His expression changed.
The name that neither of us wanted to mention hung between us.
The Power Reapers.
The secret cult that had tried to capture me, to extract what they called my ‘gift.’ They believed my healing ability was not natural. They wanted to study it. Weaponize it.
“I cannot return,” I repeated. “If I go back, they will come out of hiding again. And this time, they will not fail.”
Mr. Laurent looked shaken. “We have strengthened security.”
“It will not be enough,” I replied.
Rainwater dripped from my hair onto my face. I wiped it away impatiently.
“Go back,” I told them firmly. “Tell the President I am grateful, but I cannot help.”
“Sir—”
“Go back,” I repeated.
I turned and began walking away.
For a few seconds, I heard their footsteps trailing behind me.
“Medical God!” Mr. Laurent called out. “At least reconsider! The nation—”
“I have made my decision,” I said without turning around. “Do not follow me again.”
I walked into a small coffee shop at the corner of the street and pushed the door open.
I chose a table in the far corner and sat down.
I did not order anything.
Instead, I leaned forward and placed my forehead against the cool wooden surface of the table.
If I had told Sonia the truth… if I had told her that I was the so-called Medical God… that nations had once waited for my words… would she have looked at me differently?
Would she have defended me today instead of dismissing me?
Or would she have feared me?
Before I realized it, I had fallen asleep at the table.
I woke when I felt someone gently tapping my shoulder.
“Sir?” a woman’s voice called softly.
I lifted my head and blinked. It was the waitress.
“You have been here since morning,” she said politely. “It is already seven in the evening, and we are about to close.”
I stared at her. “Seven?”
“Yes, sir.”
I straightened immediately. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep here.”
“It’s alright,” she replied kindly. “You looked like you needed the rest.”
“Thank you,” I said. “And I apologize.”
I stepped outside. The rain had stopped, and the streets were dark.
“I need to go home,” I muttered.
I hailed a cab and gave the driver my address. During the ride, one thought stayed in my mind: I should apologize to Sonia. Even if she misunderstood me, I should not let pride create distance between us.
When the cab stopped in front of the villa, I paid the driver and stepped out. The lights inside the house were still on, which struck me as unusual for that hour.
I opened the door quietly and walked in.
The living room was brightly lit.
Then I stopped.
Sonia was standing in the middle of the room. Her back was partly turned toward me.
But she was not alone.
Greg stood very close to her. Too close.
His hands were on her waist, roaming freely over her body.
Before I could react, he leaned down and kissed her.
It was not rushed. It was slow and deliberate.
Sonia did not push him away.
I froze where I stood. My eyes widened as I tried to process what I was seeing. My chest tightened sharply, and for a moment I could not breathe properly.
Greg’s hands remained on her body as they continued kissing.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
And for the first time in a long while, I did not feel humiliation.
I felt betrayal.

“Sonia…”My voice was not loud, but it was enough. The sound of her name from my mouth cut through the room like a blade. Sonia froze immediately. Greg’s hands were still on her waist, but the moment she heard me, she stiffened and quickly stepped away from him.Greg turned his head slowly. Our eyes met.Instead of looking surprised or guilty, he smirked. It was the kind of smirk that said he had already won.Sonia turned around fully, and when she saw me standing there, her expression shifted from shock to something complicated.“I… I didn’t expect you back so early,” she said. Her voice was not trembling. That hurt more than if it had been.I stood where I was, my mind still struggling to accept what I had just witnessed.“What exactly were you planning to say?” I asked quietly. “After I just walked in and saw you kissing him?”The room felt unbearably silent.Greg casually adjusted his suit as though nothing inappropriate had happened.Sonia rubbed her forehead as if she were tryin

CHAPTER 8
For a few long seconds after Greg said the pain was gone, the whole hall felt frozen. No one clapped. No one spoke. They just stared at me like I had done something impossible. Then suddenly, Doctor Han snapped out of his shock.“This is not right,” he said quickly, rushing forward. “There must be a mistake somewhere.”He pushed past two guests and knelt beside Greg again. His movements were hurried now, nothing like the calm and confident doctor from earlier.“There is no logical explanation for salt water healing an unknown lung condition,” he said loudly, almost like he was trying to convince himself. “It does not make medical sense.”I remained where I was. Calm and quiet.Doctor Han grabbed the medical device his assistant had brought earlier. He began checking Greg’s pulse, blood pressure, breathing, all over again…“Check it again,” he told his assistant sharply.“I am checking, Doctor,” the assistant replied nervously. “His vitals are… normal.”“Normal?” Doctor Han repeated.“
CHAPTER 7
Doctor Han lifted his hand and signaled for silence, and gradually the noise in the banquet hall faded into a tense quiet. He turned toward Sonia’s mother, who was still visibly angry and embarrassed by my actions.“Madam,” Doctor Han said in a composed tone, “please allow me to handle him. There is no need for you to concern yourself with this matter.”Sonia’s mother frowned deeply. “Handle him how, Doctor Han? What exactly are you planning to do? This is already shameful enough.”Doctor Han adjusted his glasses slowly and glanced at me with a smile that did not reach his eyes. “Since your son-in-law seems to enjoy talking beyond his ability, I would like to give him the opportunity to prove himself.”A few guests laughed softly at his choice of words.Sonia’s father looked uncomfortable but said nothing.Doctor Han continued speaking, but this time his tone became firmer. “However, if he fails, there must be consequences. We cannot allow people to treat a serious medical emergency
CHAPTER 6
Around Doctor Han, the other physicians straightened their backs instinctively, as though my mere presence was an insult to them. One of them scoffed loudly, making no effort to lower his voice. “Who exactly is this man supposed to be?” he asked, looking me up and down with obvious irritation.“I heard he’s the Davenport family’s live-in son-in-law,” someone in the crowd replied in a mocking but clearly audible tone.“Oh… that one?” another voice sneered from somewhere behind the guests. “The unemployed one who eats off his wife’s family?”The murmurs spread quickly, moving through the hall.Meanwhile, Greg was still sprawled on the floor, gasping for air as though every breath was being squeezed out of him by invisible hands. His fingers clawed desperately at his chest, digging into his suit as if he could physically tear away the pain that gripped him.His mother suddenly rushed toward me, her heels striking the floor sharply with every furious step. Her face was twisted with fea
CHAPTER 5
The silence that followed my words did not last long.Greg stared at me for a moment, then let out a short, dismissive laugh. He shook his head slowly, as if I had just told the most ridiculous joke of the evening.“You speak with a lot of confidence for someone who does not even belong in this room.”A few guests laughed again, grateful that the tension had dissolved back into entertainment. But all of a sudden, to everyone’s shock, Greg’s smile faltered for half a second. His hand, which had been lifting the wine glass again, suddenly froze mid-air.Then his face became pale as he inhaled sharply, gasping for air.“Ah—” The sound escaped him before he could control it.The glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the floor. For a split second, no one understood what had happened.Greg’s hand flew to his chest, clasping it tightly.“What… what is this?” he muttered hoarsely. His breathing changed immediately. It became shallow and strained, as if an invisible weight had s
