Chapter 108
The keys arrived on Monday morning, one at Mason's house and one at Steve's, each in a small cream envelope with no stamp. They were old brass keys, heavy and slightly worn, tied with a length of faded blue ribbon. Each came with a card in neat black ink.*17 Rue des Archives. Tonight at nine. A wedding present, rather late. C.M.*Mason turned the card over. There was nothing on the back.He showed it to Martha at breakfast. She read it twice, then set it down beside her coffee and looked at him across the table for a long moment."Are you going?""Yes.""Is it safe?"He thought about it honestly, because he'd promised her he would always answer honestly. "I don't know," he said. "But I think she'd have told me if it wasn't."Martha nodded. Then she reached across the table and straightened his collar, the way she did every morning now, and kissed him."Come home after," she said.At five to nine, Mason climbed the three worn steps of the narrow stone house and found Steve already sta
Chapter 107
Eight months later, on the first warm Saturday of June, Harrington Stadium opened its gates. Sixty thousand people came. They poured across the new bridge from the south side in black and gold shirts, singing, carrying flags and children on their shoulders. Where Pier 9 had once been a field of grass over a poisoned pit, there was now a great curving bowl of steel and glass rising out of the harbour. Its roof shone white in the afternoon sun, and its stands were packed so tightly that the whole structure seemed to hum. Dário Mendes scored in the eleventh minute. The noise was so loud that people on the north side of the river heard it through their open windows. Steve watched from the directors' box with Aiko on one side of him and Valentina on the other. Aiko had a tablet on her knee and was checking the gate numbers even while the crowd roared. Valentina was on a two-day break from filming in the mountains, still with the remains of Queen Maren's battle scar painted faintly along
Chapter 106
Mason woke at nine o'clock on Sunday morning, which hadn't happened in two years.Pale sunlight lay across the bed. Martha was asleep beside him with one arm flung over her head and her dark hair spread across the pillow, still threaded with a few crushed white flowers from the day before. The ring was on her left hand, resting against the sheet. For a while, he just lay there and looked at her. He didn't count anything. He didn't plan anything. It was a strange, almost frightening feeling, like stepping off a moving train onto solid ground. The door creaked. Lily's face appeared in the gap, followed by the rest of her in yellow pyjamas."Are you awake?" she whispered loudly."No," said Mason."You *are*." She climbed onto the bed without being asked and wriggled in between them, and Martha woke up laughing with the little girl's cold feet pressed against her legs. Lily looked from one of them to the other with enormous seriousness."Are you married now? Properly?""Properly," Martha
Chapter 105
The trustees left first. Evelyn had to be helped from the room by Dame Patricia, still crying. Harold Pike and Brandt went without a word, not looking at anyone. Okafor paused at the door, looked back at Celeste with an expression of pure terror, and then fled.Julian Cruz didn't move from his armchair until Jessica crouched beside him and touched his arm. He looked at his daughter for a long moment. Then he got up, very heavily, like a man twice his age, and let her lead him to the door. He stopped there and looked back at Celeste one last time. She met his eyes. She didn't look away."Fifteen years," Julian said hoarsely."Every word I ever said to you was true," Celeste said. "Including the ones about your books."He looked at her a moment longer. Then he went out, and Jessica closed the door behind them. The three of them were alone. The library was quiet except for the fire. Celeste sat on one side of the long oak table, with her phone face up beside her hand. Mason sat across fr
Chapter 104
Celeste Moreau had counted everything. She'd counted the ambulance's six minutes and the spare inhaler in Martha's handbag. She'd counted the ninety seconds it would take Dr. Reyes to reach the emergency bay, and the exact dose of medication in the hospital nebuliser. She had counted Mason's love for the child before he knew it himself, and she had been right. She had counted Steve's pride and Steve's grief and the precise moment he would stop running from that phone call on the balcony. She had counted Vanessa and Evelyn, three trustees and a frightened judge. For two years, she had held the whole city in her head like a board she could see from above. She had not counted Julian Cruz's face.He was sitting in the armchair by the fireplace, an old man in a tweed suit, staring at her. She had known him for fifteen years. She had sat in his library on wet afternoons and argued with him about commas. She had been the one to tell him, gently, that his king was boring and his steward was t
Chapter 103
The library was the largest room in the house, and tonight it felt small. The trustees took their seats around the long oak table that Felix's men had carried in from the dining room an hour before. There were seven of them. Evelyn Vance sat at the head as chair, with Mason at her right hand. Then came Gregory Sterling's old friend Harold Pike, who ran a shipping insurance firm; Dame Patricia Lowe, a retired judge in her seventies; and two quiet investment managers named Okafor and Brandt, who had both been on the board for decades. Each of them had a thin leather folder in front of them and a glass of water they didn't touch.Mason watched their faces as they sat down. Harold Pike glanced toward the door twice. Brandt kept smoothing his tie. Dame Patricia looked as though she'd rather be anywhere else on earth.Three of them belonged to the Ledger. He was almost certain of it. He just didn't know which three. The door opened again, and Celeste walked in.Nobody had invited her, and n
