The heavy oak door of the war room slammed outward as three masked figures in unmarked black leather burst into the doorway, curved blades drawn and gleaming in the firelight.

They didn't carry the crest of the Frostfang royal guard, nor the sigil of Silvermoon. These were professionals silent, ruthless, and moving with the deadly synchronized rhythm of high-tier mercenary shadow-walkers.

Kaelen didn't ask questions.

He stepped directly into the doorway, his massive broadsword sweeping through the air in a brutal arc. The heavy iron blade shattered the lead assassin’s sword, the sheer kinetic force driving the man back into his accomplices. Smoke billowed up the stairwell behind them, thick and black, choking the narrow passage.

"They aren't here for us," Seraphina called out from behind him, her voice entirely devoid of panic despite the heat radiating off the burning walls. "Look at their belts!"

Kaelen’s crimson eyes flashed as he parried a lethal strike from the second assassin. Strapped to the lead mercenary’s hip were two oil flasks and a lit slow-match. They hadn't come to assassinate the King; they had come to burn the war room and every ledger inside it.

"Protect the desk!" Kaelen growled, his Alpha aura surging out in a concentrated burst.

The pressure slammed into the narrow corridor like a battering ram. The lead assassin staggered, coughing as his lungs compressed under royal force. Kaelen lunged forward, slamming his shoulder into the man’s chest and throwing him down the stone steps.

The third assassin lunged around Kaelen’s flank, his poisoned blade driving straight toward the ledger tucked under Seraphina’s arm.

Seraphina didn't retreat.

She dropped low beneath his blade, her silver boot kicking hard into the back of his knee. As the man buckled, she drove her silver boot-dagger deep into his thigh. The assassin grunted, dropping his blade, but before he could draw his sidearm, Seraphina grabbed the back of his collar and slammed his head hard against the stone doorframe, knocking him unconscious onto the floor.

Kaelen finished the second attacker with a swift, crushing hilt-strike to the temple, clearing the doorway.

"Two minutes past two in the morning," Seraphina said calmly, wiping her blade on her cloak as she looked down at the unconscious man at her feet. "The night guard rotates at two fifteen. Whoever hired them knew the exact twelve-minute window when the upper gallery would be unmonitored."

Kaelen wiped his blade and stepped over the fallen bodies, looking down at Seraphina with a mix of lethal focus and rising fascination. Her hair was dusted with ash, her silver robes stained with soot, but her violet eyes were locked onto the lead assassin down the stairs.

"You fight like a border ranger," Kaelen observed, his voice dark and low.

"I was trained by border rangers," she replied, slinging the leather-bound ledger securely across her back with a leather strap. "Now help me search him before the guards arrive."

Kaelen knelt beside the unconscious lead assassin, flipping the man over and tearing open his leather tunic. Expecting a coin purse or a contract mark, Kaelen’s hand paused on a heavy iron medallion resting against the man’s chest.

It wasn't a noble crest. It was a trade guild seal stamped with the mark of the Southern Ironworks Coalition.

Seraphina leaned in, her eyes narrowing as she studied the mark. "The Southern Ironworks Coalition supplies ninety percent of the raw iron for Duke Alden’s smithies. But look at the casting." She reached out, her fingers gently touching the edge of the seal without disturbing Kaelen's grip. "This isn't southern iron. It’s forged from high-density mountain ore mined exclusively in the northern territories."

Kaelen felt the puzzle shift under his hands. "Northern ore is strictly controlled by my royal crown reserves. Duke Alden couldn't buy northern ore legally without my personal consent."

"Which means someone inside your royal northern command is illegally selling crown ore to southern dukes," Seraphina concluded, looking up into his eyes. "And Duke Alden is using that iron to pay these mercenaries to burn the evidence."

Heavy, frantic footfalls thundered up the staircase as General Vane burst through the smoke, flanked by ten fully armed royal guards with wet cloths tied over their faces.

"Your Majesty!" Vane roared, his sword drawn as he took in the scene the unconscious mercenaries, the smoke pouring from the archives below, and Seraphina standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the King holding the central ledger. "The lower archives are compromised! We need to evacuate you to the inner keep!"

Vane’s eyes flicked to the iron medallion resting in Kaelen’s hand, then to the ledger strapped across Seraphina’s back. For a split second, Vane’s jaw tightened, his amber eyes dropping to the unconscious mercenary.

Kaelen stood up slowly to his full height, closing his hand around the iron medallion and slipping it into his coat pocket.

"The fire is under control, General?" Kaelen asked, his voice smooth as ice, giving away nothing of what they had just discovered.

"My men are smothering the archive flames now, Sire," Vane reported, bowing his head stiffly. "It appears an oil lantern shattered in the vault. A tragic accident."

"An accident accompanied by three armed mercenaries in my war room," Seraphina said coolly, stepping beside Kaelen and locking eyes with Vane. "Fascinating timing, General."

Vane met her glare with unyielding stone. "The citadel is under siege by unknown infiltrators, Lady Seraphina. My first duty is the King's life, not the preservation of old paper."

"Old paper is the only reason you still have a budget, General," Kaelen interjected sharply, his tone cutting off the rising fire between them.

Kaelen turned to his captain of the guard. "Lock these mercenaries in the deepest cell in the dungeon. Strip them of everything, post eight guards on the door, and ensure no one I repeat, no one enters their cell without my direct written order."

"Yes, Your Majesty!" the captain barked, dragging the men away.

Kaelen looked at Seraphina, then back at Vane. "General, assemble the High Council at sunrise. We have a traitor in our northern supply lines, and tomorrow, we begin a full audit of every iron mine in the empire."

Vane bowed low, his expression inscrutable. "At once, Sire."

As Vane marched down the corridor to execute the order, Kaelen leaned toward Seraphina, his voice dropping to a whisper meant for her ears alone. "He saw the medallion."

"He did," Seraphina whispered back, her gaze following Vane's retreating figure. "And whether he’s trying to protect your crown or his own skin, tomorrow morning at the High Council... he’s going to make his move."

The high stone archways of the Sovereign Hall echoed with the harsh clatter of iron as the veteran guards of the 4th Infantry hauled Lord Regent Varick and his six conspirators down the marble steps.Varick’s heavy velvet robes dragged through the dust, his frantic screaming fading into the deep stone corridors of the lower dungeons. The remaining noble lords stood frozen in two sharp rows, their faces pale, holding their breath as Alpha King Kaelen wiped his broadsword with a dark silk cloth and returned it to its scabbard with a sharp, echoing click. The atmosphere in the hall had shifted entirely. The suffocating, heavy Alpha aura that Kaelen had unleashed during the confrontation subsided into a steady, magnetic authority that filled the vast chamber.Beside the throne, General Vane stepped forward, his posture straight and his hand resting on the hilt of his ceremonial sidearm. He turned to face the remaining lords, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet."By decree of the Sov

The quiet of the chamber stretched long and heavy after Vane’s admission. The old soldier remained on his knee, his head bowed, waiting for the blade or the order of execution.Kaelen didn't draw his sword. He stood above his former commander, looking down at the scarred man who had carried him off the blood of Red Ridge ten years ago. His crimson eyes held no rage only the cold, unyielding weight of a King who had finally taken full possession of his throne."Get up, Vane," Kaelen commanded, his deep voice cutting through the silence.Vane blinked, slowly raising his head. "Sire?""You failed me the moment you decided to protect the boy instead of trusting the King," Kaelen said, his tone razor-sharp. "You fought a shadow war alone, and in doing so, you almost handed my continent to traitors.""I am ready to accept whatever punishment""Your punishment," Kaelen interrupted smoothly, "is that you will stand at my right hand tomorrow morning and help us burn this conspiracy to the grou

The northern storm followed them down from the peaks, blanketing the valley in a thick sheet of white fog. By midnight, the black stone spires of the Frostfang Citadel loomed out of the mist like giant, silent sentinels. At the edge of the outer tree line, Kaelen reined in his stallion. Beside him, Seraphina and their three surviving vanguard guards pulled their grey cloaks tight against the freezing sleet."The main gate is garrisoned by thirty Royal Crown Guards," Kaelen said low, his eyes scanning the torchlit battlements above the drawbridge. "If the High Council ordered the ambush in the pass, the gate captain already has instructions to detain us the moment we show our signet.""We aren't using the gate," Seraphina replied, unrolling a hand-drawn leather map against her saddle horn. She pointed a gloved finger at the base of the eastern cliff, where the citadel’s outer wall met the sheer granite face of the mountain. "When your father built the keep forty years ago, he installed

The cold air inside the subterranean bunker smelled of damp stone and bitter dried herbs.Kaelen stood before the mountain of wooden crates, a single vial of the glowing blue wolfsbane extract resting in his gloved palm. The pale light reflected off the hard angles of his jaw, his crimson eyes unreadable.Beside him, Seraphina ran her fingers over the wax seal stamped into the side of a transport crate."The seal belongs to the Northern Imperial Pharmacy," Seraphina said softly, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Wolfsbane processing at this concentration requires a high royal permit. It isn't made in back-alley laboratories, Kaelen. It was refined inside your own capital capital's alchemy wing."Kaelen’s fingers tightened around the glass vial. "The capital alchemists report directly to the High Council of Dukes. The same council that dispatched the Royal Crown Guard to cut us off in the pass.""And the same council that pushed you to strip Vane of his command at sunrise," Serap

Steel clashed against steel, ringing out through the freezing gorge as snow whipped into Kaelen’s eyes. The narrow path left no room for wide cavalry sweeps. Kaelen’s five royal vanguard guards were cut off thirty yards back, their horses trapped in a bottleneck against three attackers, while Kaelen and Seraphina fought shoulder-to-shoulder against the rest.A heavy broadsword swung low toward Seraphina’s horse. Kaelen drove his stallion forward, taking the blow on his iron shoulder guard with a violent CLANG that rattled his teeth. In the same breath, Seraphina ducked under the attacker’s guard, her silver dagger piercing the gap in his neck armor. The warrior collapsed into the snow, his blood steaming on the black rock."Back to back!" Kaelen barked, pulling his horse tight against hers."I have the cliff face!" Seraphina called back. She drew a small iron flask from her saddlebag, lit the short wick off her horse's oil lantern, and hurled it high against the overhang above the rem

Three days out from the citadel, the landscape had stripped away all royal comfort, leaving only black rock, ice, and silence.Kaelen rode at the front of their small six-horse vanguard, his heavy dark fur cloak broad against the wind. Behind him, wrapped tight in a grey wool traveling mantle, Seraphina rode with her reins held in a practiced, easy grip.Kaelen glanced back over his shoulder, checking her distance for the third time in an hour."You don't need to keep checking if I've frozen off my saddle, Your Majesty," Seraphina called out over the wind, a slight, knowing curve on her lips. "Silvermoon border winters make this look like a spring breeze.""I’m not checking if you’re frozen," Kaelen replied smoothly, reining his stallion back until he was riding side-by-side with her horse. "I’m checking your perimeter spacing. A flank ambush in this gorg
