THE FRACTURE WIDENS

The sky was bleeding, and there was no way to stop it.

Thorn stood in the quiet canyon, staring up at the empty space where the golden bird had vanished. His chest heaved with slow, heavy breaths, but his heart felt like a block of ice.

"We need to move now," Lyra said in his head, her ghostly voice sharp with panic. "That messenger bird will reach the high council before the sun sets. Every hunter on the continent is coming for your neck."

"I know," Thorn grunted, taking a step forward.

He stopped instantly, his boots frozen on the dirt. A strange, wet tearing sound filled the air, echoing from high above the slate walls. It did not sound like thunder or cracking rock. It sounded like thick cloth being ripped apart by massive hands.

Thorn looked up.

The blue sky above the canyon split open. A jagged, dark purple tear stretched across the clouds, growing wider by the second. Pale purple light poured out from the rift, casting long, unnatural shadows across the dirt.

"What is that?" Thorn asked, his eyes narrowing as he stepped back.

"You pushed too hard," Lyra muttered, her voice trembling slightly. "I told you this power comes with a price! When you unmade Vane's meridians and shattered the local rules, you tore the thin skin of this world."

"The sky is just color," Thorn said, trying to keep his voice steady.

"It is not just color!" Lyra shouted inside his mind. "It is the barrier holding back the forgotten realms! Every time you erase a rule, reality thins out. Do you see what you have done?"

Thorn watched in silence as the sky above the forest began to break apart. Small pieces of the clouds turned gray and dissolved into nothingness. From deep inside the purple tear, a strange landscape began to spill down into the mortal realm.

A massive chunk of a ruined, ancient city floated out of the void, crashing silently into the tall pine trees a mile away. The trees did not burn or snap. The moment the purple light touched the green leaves, the wood hardened and turned into clear, jagged glass. Green grass turned into cold gray sand, and the air grew so thin it burned to breathe.

"The forest is turning to glass," Thorn whispered, watching a flock of birds freeze mid-flight, their feathers morphing into solid crystal before dropping like stones.

"That is an alien dimension leaking through," Lyra said, her spectral voice laced with dark dread. "A dead world that was locked away ten thousand years ago. If you keep using the artifact, you will pull the whole sky down on our heads."

Thorn lifted his right arm to wipe the sweat from his brow, but his arm felt strange and heavy. He looked down at his sleeve and froze.

The dark cloth of his shirt had been shredded, exposing his forearm to the cold air. The pale skin on his right hand and arm was gone. From his fingertips all the way up to his shoulder, his skin had turned into a dark, shiny stone. It was pitch black, covered in smooth, crystalline facets that caught the purple light from the sky.

He flexed his fingers. They made a soft, clicking sound, like two marbles hitting each other.

"My arm," Thorn grunted, touching the cold, hard surface with his left hand.

"It is mutating," Lyra said softly. "The relic is not just living in your chest anymore. It is taking over your physical body. Bit by bit, piece by piece, you are turning into the same black stone you carry inside you."

Thorn tapped his fingernail against his wrist. It felt completely solid, devoid of warmth or blood. Yet, he felt no pain. He felt no panic. The icy calm in his chest wrapped around his thoughts, keeping his head perfectly clear.

"Does it hurt?" Lyra asked, watching him closely through their mental link.

"No," Thorn replied, his voice flat and empty. "It feels cold. It feels strong."

"You are losing your human body, boy," Lyra warned. "First it took your feelings, now it takes your flesh. Soon there will be nothing left of the human named Thorn."

"Let it take whatever it wants," Thorn said, tightening his black, stone fist. "A human arm cannot stop a high master's blade. This one can."

"You are a terrifying creature," Lyra muttered, letting out a low, bitter laugh. "Most men would scream if their flesh turned to rock. You just treat it like a new coat of armor."

"Survival is the only thing that matters," Thorn said, turning his eyes back toward the canyon exit. "If I have to become a monster to stay alive, then I will be a monster."

He took two quick steps toward the forest, eager to put distance between himself and the bleeding sky. The distorted zone was spreading fast, turning the tall trees into brittle glass that shattered under the light wind.

Before he could reach the mouth of the canyon, the air inside the purple rift pulsated violently.

A wave of heavy, suffocating pressure slammed down onto the earth, forcing Thorn to lock his knees to keep from collapsing. The wind stopped blowing. The falling glass leaves froze in mid-air.

From deep within the dark center of the purple void, a massive voice echoed out. It did not sound like a man, nor did it sound like a god. It was a deep, resonant rumble that shook the mountain roots, vibrating straight through the dirt and into Thorn's chest.

"We hear you," the voice boomed, sending cold shockwaves through the canyon. "The seal of the high lords is broken."

Thorn grabbed his chest as the stone beneath his skin burned like hot iron, pulsing in perfect harmony with the voice from above.

"Who is speaking?" Thorn shouted into the wind, his voice rising above the low rumble.

The voice inside the rift did not answer his question directly. Instead, the ancient force called out across the dying sky, speaking a name Thorn had not heard in five long years.

"Welcome back," the voice thundered from the void. "Prince of the Blackthorn Line."

  • COLD CALCULATIONS

Even a dying god could still burn down the forest.Elder Vane lay spitting blood on the dirt, but his golden eyes burned with pure hatred. He grabbed his sword hilt, pulling the bloody metal free from his own ribs with a wet tear."You think you won, rat?" Vane spat, his voice trembling with crazy rage. "If I die here, I am taking this whole canyon down with me!"Golden light flared around Vane’s body, wild and out of control. The earth beneath them started to shake as the sheer volume of his stored power began to leak out into the air. He was not trying to aim a blade anymore. He was turning his own body into a bomb, preparing to blast every inch of the pass into fine dust."Stop him!" Lyra yelled inside Thorn's mind, her voice sharp with real panic. "He is blowing his spiritual core! If that light detonates, it will vaporize everything within three miles!"Thorn did not back away. He did not run from the rising heat. • THE HUNT BEGINS

Running from a god on wings was a fool's errand.Thorn sprinted through the dense, jagged trees of the outer wilderness, his boots slamming hard against the uneven soil. Above the thick canopy, a bright trail of golden light tore through the clouds, cutting down tall pine trees like dry grass."You cannot hide from the sky, little rat!" Elder Vane’s voice thundered from above, vibrating the dirt beneath Thorn’s feet. "Every breath you take leaves a trail of corrupt magic in the air!"Thorn did not look up. He kept his head down, breathing heavily through his nose as he darted between massive stone boulders. His body burned from the strain of the landslide, and his right hand remained cold and numb."He is closing in fast," Lyra’s sharp voice echoed in his mind. "A high-master can cross three leagues in a single heartbeat while flying. Your legs will fail long before his energy runs dry.""I am not trying to outrun him," Thorn grunted, leaping over a fallen log and skidding down a stee

A single thought could bring down a mountain.Elder Vane did not wait for Thorn to answer. He raised his golden blade, sending a blinding wave of light upward through the ceiling. The light punched clean through the earth, tearing the mountain open to the sky and exposing the dark cavern to the gray afternoon."Purge this filth!" Vane roared, his heavy voice echoing across the entire mountain range. "Burn the camp! Burn the valley! Leave nothing of this cursed place alive!"Above them, the sky exploded in golden fire as the sect disciples unleashed their full power on the mining camp. Screams of sheer terror echoed from the surface as hundreds of miners and lower cultivators were cut down in seconds by falling light."He is destroying the whole valley to wipe out your footprint, boy!" Lyra shrieked in anger, her spectral chains rattling against the crumbling rock face. "Unmake my chains right now or we both die under this mountain!""Shut up," Thorn said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Never make a deal with an entity that has no soul left to lose.Thorn did not back down. He stood his ground on the cold cavern floor, staring straight up at the giant frozen eye hovering in the dark. The purple light from the rift shifted, forming the faint silhouette of a woman bound to the rock wall by nine massive black iron spikes. Her hair floated like silver smoke, and her glowing eyes burned with ancient hatred."A mortal boy," a voice echoed directly inside Thorn's head, sounding like grinding glass. "A fragile, bleeding insect holding the heart of the Unmade Primordial."Thorn clutched his chest, his dark eyes narrowing. "Who are you?""I am Lyra," the voice rasped, her spectral chains rattling in the dark. "I am what remains of the original world before those golden usurpers chained us and called themselves gods. They lied to you, little rat. They did not create this universe. They stole it and locked the true owners under the dirt.""I do not care about your history," Thor

A human life meant nothing when the roof started to cave in.Thorn stared at the massive black door, his fingers trembling as he traced the glowing symbols carved into the metal. The stone in his chest pulsed hard, demanding to be let inside."Hey! What are you doing down here?" a loud voice shouted from behind him.Thorn turned around fast. A older miner stood at the end of the narrow tunnel, holding a flickering oil lamp. His face was covered in thick black dust, and his eyes were wide with suspicion."Get away from there!" the miner yelled, stumbling forward over the loose rocks. "That area is forbidden! The guards will skin us both if they catch us near the old seal!""Go back," Thorn said softly, his voice dead and calm. "You should not have followed me.""I saw you sneaking down the main drift," the man grumbled, waving his pickaxe threateningly. "I am not taking the blame for your mess. We are going back up right now, or I call the watch!""I am not going back," Thorn said.He
