NOLAN POV

I stared at the portrait glowing on the sending stone. The face was mine, down to the scar through the left eyebrow, but the expression belonged to someone else. It looked tired and watchful, like a man listening for footsteps in an empty house.

Mireth had shown it to the whole camp the moment it arrived. Now we stood in a tight circle around the lantern, and nobody wanted to speak first.

"The Vault is a person," Orlisse said at last. "That is not a figure of speech, is it?"

  • Chapter 31: The Message Left by the Dead

NOLAN POVThe rescued prisoners were finally asleep, but what they had told us that afternoon was anything but comforting, and the transmission had made it worse. Edrisane still stood where the veiled figure had appeared, staring at the empty air with her claws pressed hard into her palms."Who was she?" I asked."I do not know yet." She did not turn. "I will not guess aloud until I am certain.""Edrisane.""When I know, you will know." Her voice was quiet but final. "You have my word."Orlisse stepped between us before I could push. "Then we work with what we have," she said. "The prisoners and the papers."Both had come to us that morning. On our way off the black plain we had passed a Meridian staging camp at its rim, abandoned in a panic when the override failed, with nine captives still chained inside the wagons. Orlisse had insisted on cutting them loose, and the delay had cost us an hour of daylight that I had begrudged her. The nine now slept in a second hollow downslope under

  • Chapter 30: The First Choice

NOLAN POVThe ground split open beneath us in a spreading web of black cracks. The chains of pale light that had held the original Nolan still ran from his chest up the stairway to the throne, and they flared white as the interface filled my vision with warnings.OPEN HAND OVERRIDE INITIATED.VESSEL AUTHORITY TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.The system wanted me to take control. I could feel the power waiting behind the command like a hand held out in the dark. One decision would stop the collapse, and every soul connected to the network might become mine to command. I had never wanted a throne, but I had never wanted to die either."Nolan." Veyra gripped my arm. "It is pulling at us."I could feel it too. Threads ran out of me in every direction, tugging at her, at Mireth, at Orlisse, and at Thessari, and past them at hundreds of strangers whose marks had flared across the cities in the last two days. Thessari cried out, and Mireth doubled over with her hand pressed to her chest."I know," I sa

  • Chapter 29: Two Souls, One Body

VEYRA POVI looked at the man behind the barrier, and he had Nolan's face. It was not the face of the man standing beside me, whose expression I had learned to read over days of blood and bad roads. It was the face of the man I had killed. For the first time, I understood that the truth might offer me no forgiveness, no justice, and no clean ending, only another choice that somebody would have to live with."You came back," the original Nolan said. His voice was rough, as though he had not used it in a long time. "I wasn't sure you would.""I came because I need to ask you something." My throat felt tight, and I made myself hold his gaze. "You told me to run. Do you remember?""I remember everything about that night." He pressed his palm flat against the glass. "I knew the Meridian had worked on your memory, Veyra. The closed eye was already in you. But if I had told you everything, I would have exposed the second vessel, and they would have moved on it before anyone could prepare.""

  • Chapter 28: The Throne That Rejected Me

NOLAN POVThe man on the throne wore my face, but something about him was wrong. He sat too still, as though breathing were a habit he had never learned, and the scar through his left eyebrow was a perfect pale line, drawn rather than earned.A woman rose out of the black glass behind him. She was translucent and gray-robed, with a braid that fell to her waist, and Thessari drew a sharp breath beside me. It was the woman from her vision."You were brought here to replace a failure," she said.I stepped forward. "Then tell me what failed."The figure on the throne opened its eyes. They were black from edge to edge, and its voice came out flat and level. "The first Sovereign."The ground trembled. The mark on my wrist, dead and cold since Edrisane's disconnection, flared white without any help from me. The motionless stars overhead began to turn, and the air above the plain filled with pale images of a woman in a white room, threads of light running into her arms. Her hands shook, and o

  • Chapter 27: The Lie of the First Sovereign

NOLAN POVEdrisane did not deny it. She asked only one question. "What exactly did she say?"Thessari repeated the message word for word, her voice steady even though her hands were not. Edrisane closed her eyes, and when she opened them, the calm certainty I had come to associate with her was gone."I was not the first Sovereign," she said. "I was the one who helped bury the truth about the first."Nobody moved. Orlisse set down the map she had been holding, and Veyra shifted half a step closer to me."Explain," Orlisse said."I served during the final years of the original network." Edrisane stood very straight, but her voice had lost its weight. "The first Sovereign was not a ruler. She was a keeper, the one who coordinated every voluntary connection and carried the burden of holding them steady. When an attempt to centralize the system failed, I helped erase her name so that no one could use the network to find her.""She?" Mireth asked."I have already said more than I should. Th

  • Chapter 26: The Woman Behind the Veil

THESSARI POVI have dreamed of her face for weeks, a woman behind a veil of light, standing at the place where every possible future ends. Tonight she stood in front of me without the veil, and she looked at me as though she had been waiting a very long time."You keep trying to save him," she said."Who are you?"The woman smiled, and the smile was not unkind. "The better question is why he was sent to replace me."The vision slipped away like water through my fingers, and I woke in Edrisane's hall with my pulse hammering. The beacons had been burning on the horizon for an hour, and the new marks on strangers' wrists were still spreading through my senses like a rash. I could not wait for the network to show me the next branch. I had to go to her myself."I want to follow the resonance," I told Edrisane. I stood in the middle of the stone circle with my notebook open in both hands. "Deliberately, toward the erased site, before the network can bend the outcome again.""That is dangero
