The reinforced blast doors hissed shut behind him, but the sound was instantly drowned out by the whining shriek of base-wide klaxons. Red emergency strobes washed the metallic corridors in a strobe-light nightmare, painting the walls with streaks of crimson and black.

Darius didn't look back. His boots hammered against the grated decking as he sprinted deeper into the bowels of the maintenance labyrinth, trading the pristine, high-clearance zones for rusted conduits and dripping service pipes. Every breath burned his lungs like inhaling powdered glass. The seed in his solar plexus throbbed—a hot, jagged rhythm that mocked his desperate pace.

"Attention all sectors, Code Red," a metallic, disembodied voice echoed from the overhead speakers. "Target is former Sergeant Darius. Shoot on sight. He is classified as a hostile bioweapon."

Darius ducked sharply as a heavy-caliber pulse bolt scorched the overhead cables, showering him in a cascade of blue sparks. He slid behind a rusted hydraulic housing, pulling his breath into a ragged gasp. Peeking around the corner, he saw a three-man tactical squad sweeping the lower corridor, their assault rifles sweeping side to side, searchlights piercing the gloom.

"He went this way! Check the secondary junction!" the lead operator barked, his voice distorted through a heavy tactical helmet.

Darius didn't wait. He unclipped a standard issue flash-bang from his tactical belt, pulled the pin with his teeth, and bounced it hard off the far wall.

Flash. Bang.

The corridor erupted in blinding white light and a concussive shockwave that rattled Darius's teeth. Shouts of disorientation echoed down the hall. Darius sprang from cover like a coiled spring, closing the distance in three long strides. He swept the legs out from under the first operator, drove the butt of his empty rifle into the helmet visor of the second, and slammed the third against the bulkhead with enough force to send him slumping unconscious to the floor.

He didn't kill them. He didn't have time. Snatching a fresh ammo mag and a secure comms-pad from the fallen leader's vest, Darius bolted toward the outer maintenance shafts.

The outer rim was where the colony bled into the dead rock of the planet. It was a massive, sprawling network of atmospheric seals and heavy transport tunnels that led directly out into the ash-choked plains. If Aris had locked down the primary hangars, the service tunnels were his only ticket off the grid.

Static hissed in his ear.

"Darius! Do you copy? Come in, damn you!"

Darius froze, pressing his back against a dripping steam pipe. He pulled the purloined comms-pad from his pocket. The encryption frequency was flickering. "Kael? How did you get this frequency?"

"Never mind that, are you out of your damn mind?" Kael’s voice was a frantic hiss, half-drowned out by the background noise of heavy machinery and rushing footsteps. "The whole base is locked down tighter than a vault! Aris has declared martial law in the sectors. He’s telling everyone you unleashed the swarm!"

"I didn't unleash a damn thing, Kael, I stopped it," Darius muttered, wiping sweat and soot from his eyes. "And if you’re talking to me on an unsecured line, you’re making yourself an accessory to treason. Get off the comms."

"Screw the comms, and screw Aris!" Kael snapped back, his voice cracking with panic and frustration. "Elara and I are barricaded in the auxiliary lab. They’re tearing the upper decks apart looking for you. Where are you?"

"Heading for the Sector 9 service exit," Darius said, rounding another corner only to find a locked pneumatic gate blocking his path. He slammed his fist against the digital keypad, but the screen flashed a merciless red: ACCESS REVOKED. "Damn it. The blast doors are sealed."

"Hold on, hold on," Kael muttered, the sound of furious keyboard clacking coming through the tiny speaker. "Elara’s overriding the local grid from here. She says... wait, she’s bypassing the firewall now."

"Make it fast, Kael. I’ve got hounds on my tail," Darius warned, drawing his sidearm as heavy boots echoed from the corridor he had just fled. They were catching up. The scent of ozone and burning rubber was growing thicker.

"Talk to me, Elara, come on," Kael muttered under his breath, before speaking up again. "She’s in! Look at your HUD, Darius. The door should be blinking green."

With a sharp click, the heavy pneumatic gate groaned and slid upward, revealing the dark, windswept maw of the outer service tunnel. Bitter, toxic wind rushed in, carrying the smell of sulfur and dead earth.

"I see it," Darius said. "Kael... listen to me. Stay put. Don't let Aris find you with me."

"And where are you going to go, man? You're walking right out into the Dead Zones with nothing but a half-charged rifle and a death wish!"

"I’m going to find the source," Darius said quietly, watching the shadows lengthen in the corridor behind him as the searchlights swept closer. "If I stay here, Aris burns the colony to get to me. If I leave, I draw them out."

"Darius—"

"See you on the other side, Kael. Keep Elara safe."

Darius cut the feed, pocketing the comms-pad just as a barrage of plasma fire chewed up the metal wall inches from his head.

"There he is! At the service exit! Fire!"

Darius didn't hesitate. He dived headfirst through the half-open gate, rolling hard onto the gritty, ash-covered ground outside. Behind him, the pneumatic door slammed downward with a heavy, echoing thud, cutting off the shouts of the security forces and sealing him in the freezing, unforgiving expanse of the wasteland.

He pushed himself up, his muscles aching, the seed in his chest sending a warm, pulsing thrum through his veins like a second, angrier heartbeat. The wind whipped his jacket around his shoulders as he stared out into the jagged silhouette of the ruins.

He was alone now. No military backup, no allies inside the wire, and a target painted squarely on his back by his own people.

He gripped his rifle, took a deep, burning breath of the toxic air, and stepped out into the dark.

The air inside Sub-Level Six tasted of wet rust and old copper. Dr. Elara’s boots echoed against the perforated steel grating as she hurried down the unlit corridor, the narrow beam of her handheld mag-light cutting through the heavy, stagnant gloom. Every breath felt like inhaling fine glass dust. She wasn't supposed to be down here. According to General Aris’s latest directives, this sector was sealed under emergency quarantine, flagged as a high-risk structural hazard. But Aris didn't know about the secondary terminal—an analog, fiber-optic bypass wired deep into the bedrock by the colony's original architects before the military took over and turned the science outpost into an armed garrison.Elara reached the end of the hall, sliding her security badge through a mechanical lock that groaned in protest before the heavy blast door clicked and slid open. The room beyond was a relic. Beside him, Kael dropped to one knee, his breath catching in his throat as the horizon—usually a jagged silhouette of dead skyscrapers against an ash-choked sky—lit up with a blinding, iridescent indigo glare."What the hell is that?" Kael muttered, his grip tightening on his rifle so hard his knuckles turned white. "Is that an Aris-class atmospheric drone?""No," Darius said, his voice dropping an octave as the seed in his chest coiled tight like a struck spring. "That’s something older. Something we weren't supposed to wake up."High above the clouds, the artificial stars of the colony flickered and died, snuffed out not by atmospheric interference, but by a massive, sweeping geometric shadow. It was a vessel—or

The void humming beneath his skin radiating a steady, feverish heat that kept the frostbite at bay, though it tasted like battery acid on the back of his tongue. He stood motionless beside a shattered radar dish, his assault rifle gripped tight in one hand while his eyes scanned the frozen tree line below.A sharp metallic clink echoed from the stairwell. Darius spun on his heel, his finger tightening on the trigger, the violet embers in his irises flaring in the dim gloom."Whoa, whoa! Easy with the fireworks, man! It’s just me!"A figure stumbled through the rusted hatch, huffing clouds of vapor into the freezing air. Kael slammed the door shut against the howling gale, leaning back agai

Through the billowing cloud of grey smoke and sparking wires, a silhouette stepped through the threshold—massive, broad-shouldered, and entirely encased in matte-black, experimental powered armor that hummed with a sickly, cobalt-blue discharge."Target acquired. Sub-level four secured," a synthesized, metallic voice boomed from the armored figure's external speakers. "Surrender immediately, former Sergeant. You are flagged for immediate reclamation under Directive Nine."Behind the primary juggernaut, two more specialized operatives poured into the room, their heavy magnetic rail-rifles locked onto Darius’s chest with terrifying precision. This wasn't a standard military squad sent to execute a fugitive; this was Aris’s personal extraction and pacification unit—the military’s ul

  • Chapter 11: Void Genetic Code

The underground subterranean lab hummed with a low, parasitic frequency that made Darius’s teeth ache. The air tasted of copper and ozone, thick enough to chew. He wiped a streak of dark, viscous sweat from his forehead, his breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches as he stared at the bioluminescent monitor glowing in front of him.The screen wasn't just displaying data; it was screaming at him. Double-helix strands of DNA cascaded down the black glass, twisted and corrupted by jagged, obsidian fractures that looked less like genetic code and more like digital lightning."Damn it," Darius muttered, his voice hoarse. He slammed his bare palm against the cold steel console, the impact sending a jolt of phantom pain shooting straight up his forearm. The seed inside his solar plexus flared in response, a hot, rhythmic burn that pulsed in time with the monitor's erratic heartbeat. Every time the pulse hit, his vision blurred at the edges, bleeding into a suffocating, pitch-black void where

The air inside the auxiliary lab smelled of scorched wiring and unwashed panic. Kael slammed his fist against the central terminal, the heavy thump echoing off the sterile, cramped walls. Across the room, Dr. Elara didn't even flinch; her fingers were a blur over the holographic interface, her eyes darting across cascades of rolling data logs that she was frantically scrubbing."He's out there, Elara! Do you even realize what that means?" Kael spun around, his chest heaving under his flak jacket. His voice was ragged, pitched halfway between fury and sheer terror. "Aris has got half the battalion sweeping the outer perimeter with live rounds. One wrong step and Darius isn't just a prisoner anymore—he's a grease stain on the rocks!""And if he stayed here, he would've been dissected before midnight," Elara replied, her voice dangerously calm as she yanked a heavy data-drive from the main console. She shoved it into a secure pouch on her belt. "General Aris doesn't w
