Exodus’s fingers twisted in a haze of black mist, numbing rather than burning.

In a last-ditch effort to survive, Lyra lunged, driving her rune-carved silver dagger toward his chest. The anti-necromantic symbols on the blade flared with an urgent blue light, designed to cut through spirits.

Yet Exodus didn’t flinch. His sword remained lowered.

With his bare left hand, he caught the blade. The runes screamed as the chill of the Graveyard seeped through the metal. The enchantments flickered, then snuffed out entirely. With a twist, Exodus shattered the once-legendary weapon into shards that clattered on the stone floor.

Before Lyra could react, Exodus grabbed her chest and slammed her against the heavy mahogany desk.

She didn’t feel her ribs break. Instead, a suffocating weight pressed onto her soul. The black mist seeped through her armor and flesh, anchoring deep within her life force.

Her eyes rolled back, a silent scream trapped in her throat. In her mind, the dark archive disappeared. Suddenly, she stood in an endless, gray cemetery under a motionless sky. Tombstones stretched to the horizon, and before her lay a freshly dug grave. A marker bore her name: *LYRA MOONWHISPER*.

The vision shattered, pulling her back to harsh reality.

Exodus released her, stepping back into the shadows. Lyra crumpled to her knees, clutching her chest, gasping for air that felt too warm against her chilled lungs. She tore open her tunic collar. No wound, no blood—just a cold pulse beneath her skin, out of sync with her panicked heartbeat.

“What... what did you do to me?” she rasped, her voice trembling as she faced the gray-skinned specter who had once been her commander.

“I marked you, Lyra,” Exodus replied, his voice echoing eerily. “Your name is etched in the soil. The Graveyard has claimed your soul, allowing your flesh a temporary loan.”

“Kill me then,” she choked out, tears freezing on her cheeks. “If I’m already dead, finish it!”

Exodus gazed at her, his abyssal eyes devoid of mercy. “Death is too kind for a traitor. Your usefulness isn’t over. You, the Spymaster of Solis, control the Empire’s story.”

Lyra’s breath hitched. She understood his plan. “You want me to lie for you.”

“You lied for Marius,” Exodus said, moving toward the sealed exit. “You claimed I died honorably by bandit hands. Now, maintain that lie. If Marius or Viktor learn the truth too soon, the mark on your heart will tighten. The Graveyard will swallow you before dawn.”

He paused, his ghostly eyes flaring. “Every report to Marius will declare the city secure. Any whispers of ghosts will vanish from your ledgers. You will be my shadow in the light, Spymaster.”

“And if I refuse?” Lyra whispered, knowing the answer already. “If I tell Marius anyway?”

In the corner, the shadow-guards went rigid, their eyes turning milky white. Silently, they drew their daggers and slit their own throats, collapsing in unison.

Exodus hadn’t even looked at them. His mere will had commanded their deaths.

“If you refuse,” Exodus said softly, “you will watch your agents turn their weapons on themselves before your heart freezes solid. The choice is yours.”

With a wave, the black ice sealing the mahogany doors dissolved into vapor. The doors swung open, revealing an empty corridor.

Exodus stepped through. As he entered the hallway, his silhouette blurred and vanished into the shadows, leaving no trace.

Lyra remained on her knees, surrounded by shattered ice and fresh corpses. Her hands shook as she felt the alien pulse beneath her ribs.

She was the most powerful intelligence operative in the Holy Empire of Solis, privy to every secret and hidden weapon. Yet, as she stared at the empty doorway, she realized her utter powerlessness.

The hunt hadn’t just begun; it had already consumed her from within.

Slowly, she forced herself to her feet. She approached her desk, her joints creaking. Her fingers fumbled with parchment and inkwell. With a trembling hand, she began writing the daily intelligence briefing for Captain Marius Vex.

*All sectors secure,* she wrote, her chest aching with a cold, relentless throb. *No anomalies detected within the capital.*

Outside, the sun rose over the spires of Solis, casting a golden light indifferent to the cold darkness spreading through the Empire's heart.
