The recessed light on Valentina’s vest flickered to life, cutting through the absolute darkness. Lucas gasped, not from the sudden illumination, but from the sight it revealed.

The pristine white hallway stretched out before them, cold and sterile, a stark contrast to the ruined world they’d just fled. But the floor wasn’t empty. Dozens of sleeping pods lined the walls, sleek metallic sarcophagi, each one housing a still, humanoid figure. Their eyes were open, staring ahead with a hollow, mechanical intensity that sent a chill down Lucas’s spine.

"This bunker isn't empty," Valentina whispered, her blade igniting with a fierce, violet hum, casting long, flickering shadows against the walls. "And they don't look like they’re waiting for us to join them."

Lucas pressed himself further against the cold steel of the hatch. The thundering of the horde outside was a receding echo now, but a new, more immediate threat filled the air. These were not scavengers. These were… something else.

"Are they alive?" Lucas whispered, his voice catching in his throat. His gaze swept over the unmoving faces, each one frozen in an expressionless mask.

"More or less," Valentina replied, her eyes narrowed, scanning the pods. Her blade stayed low, ready. "Looks like some kind of deep-stasis protocol. Or maybe just a very effective way to keep watch."

A low, resonant hum began to emanate from one of the pods furthest down the hall. A figure stirred, its eyelids fluttering, then fully opening to reveal eyes that were a startling shade of amber, unlike the blank stares of its compatriots.

"Identify yourselves," a voice boomed from the pod, amplified and distorted, echoing off the metallic walls. "Unauthorized entry detected. State your purpose."

Valentina didn't flinch. "We’re seeking shelter. The perimeter is compromised."

"Irrelevant," the voice responded, the figure in the pod beginning to rise, its body unlatching from the interior with a soft hiss of hydraulics. "This sector is under corporate jurisdiction. Intruders will be neutralized."

"Corporate jurisdiction?" Lucas muttered, incredulous. "The world is gone, man! Who are you even protecting it for?"

The figure stepped out of its pod, revealing a man in a pristine, dark-blue uniform, heavily armored. He carried a sleek, plasma-carbine, the barrel already glowing with a faint, internal heat. Behind him, more pods began to unlatch, revealing identical figures, all armed, all with those unsettling amber eyes.

"This facility is property of the Veridian Corporation," the lead guard stated, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He raised his carbine, pointing it directly at Valentina. "State your identification. Now."

"My name is Valentina Kusuma," she replied, her own posture defiant, her violet blade still humming. "And you should stand down, guard. I'm not a threat to your bunker."

"Valentina Kusuma," the guard repeated, a flicker of something almost like recognition in his amber eyes. "Our records indicate… you are an operative of the Sector Defense Initiative. Presumed KIA during the Collapse."

"As you can see, your records are outdated," Valentina said, a hint of disdain in her tone. "I'm very much alive. And I just saved your corporate bunker from becoming a dining hall for a thousand infected aberrations."

"The perimeter defenses are impenetrable," the guard retorted, though his weapon remained pointed at her. "No known biomass could breach them."

"Your perimeter sensors are clearly offline, then," Lucas interjected, his voice trembling slightly. "There’s a whole wave of infected out there right now, slamming against that hatch."

A low thud vibrated through the floor, followed by a muffled screech from outside. The guards exchanged glances, a subtle shift in their rigid stances.

"He speaks the truth," Valentina added. "They were drawn by something else, but they would have overrun your position within minutes. We secured the hatch."

The lead guard, who Lucas now realized had a designation patch reading 'Commander' on his uniform, lowered his weapon slightly. "Why should we believe you? For all we know, you led them here."

"Because I didn't have to," Valentina snapped. "If I wanted this bunker, I would have taken it. You think a few glorified security drones are going to stop me?"

"You're bold, operative," the Commander said, his voice retaining its robotic cadence. "But boldness doesn't change the fact that you’re trespassing. And your companion… he’s radiating a significant mana signature. A beacon, as you described."

Lucas flinched. He could feel the familiar thrum of the System in his periphery.

"He’s not a threat," Valentina stated, placing a hand on Lucas’s shoulder, a clear warning in her touch. "He’s an asset."

"An asset?" The Commander scoffed. "He’s a walking liability, drawing every predator in the sector. We have an injured operative. Sustained plasma-burn during reactivation protocols. His life signs are failing. He needs immediate medical attention that our systems cannot provide."

He gestured to one of the pods near the end of the hall. Another guard was slumped inside, his uniform scorched, his skin a grotesque mess of blistered flesh. His breathing was shallow, his eyes fluttering weakly.

"You expect me to heal him?" Lucas asked, a knot forming in his stomach. The memory of the last heal, the searing pain, the lingering ache in his arm, was still too fresh.

"Prove your worth, asset," the Commander said, his amber eyes fixed on Lucas. "Heal him. If you can, we'll consider temporary sanctuary. If you cannot… or if you are a threat… you will both be neutralized."

"He just saved your lives, and you're demanding a test?" Lucas’s voice rose, laced with frustration and a deep fear. "Do you have any idea what that does to me?"

"I understand the principle of equivalent exchange," the Commander replied, unwavering. "Your mana signature indicates a healing aptitude. Use it. Show us you are more than a liability."

Valentina tightened her grip on Lucas’s shoulder. "Do it, Lucas. This is our ticket in."

"Valentina, I'm already at critical," he whispered, gesturing vaguely at his head where the System’s warnings still blinked. "One more big one, and I could..." He trailed off, the implication clear.

"You won't collapse," she murmured, her voice low, for his ears only. "Not yet. I know your limits. Push them."

Lucas looked at the injured guard. The man’s face was contorted in pain, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. He was dying. And Lucas knew, with a sickening certainty, that he was the only one who could help. The guilt, the inherent human need to alleviate suffering, warred with his own instinct for self-preservation.

"Fine," Lucas rasped, pushing past Valentina. "Just… try not to move him after."

He knelt beside the injured guard’s pod, the pristine white walls now feeling less sterile and more like a cage. The plasma burn was horrific, an angry, cauterized wound that covered most of the man's chest and shoulder. Lucas could almost feel the phantom pain already, a premonition of the agony to come.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. The System pulsed in his mind, a cold, taunting reminder of the debt. He stretched out his hands, hovering them over the burn, visualizing the energy flowing, not as a gentle stream, but as a violent torrent that would force the cellular structure to mend.

"Hold still, okay?" Lucas muttered to the barely conscious guard. "This is going to… well, it’s going to work."

He pushed.

The warmth surged, and then the fire. It wasn't the searing line of a blade or the crushing impact of a falling building this time. It was a boiling inferno, spreading across his own chest and shoulder, mimicking the exact, excruciating plasma burn. Lucas screamed, a raw, involuntary sound that tore from his throat.

His vision exploded into pure white light. He felt his consciousness fray, tearing at the edges like cheap fabric. Every nerve ending in his body vibrated with agonizing heat. He collapsed onto his side, clutching his own chest, gasping, choked, as if his lungs had melted.

"Lucas!" Valentina moved instantly, dropping to her knee beside him, her hand gripping his arm.

But Lucas was lost in the pain. He could dimly hear the guard in the pod cry out as his flesh knitted itself back together, healthy new skin forming over the ravaged tissue. He heard the Commander’s astonished gasp, the rustle of the other guards shifting their weight.

Then, a cough ripped through Lucas’s lungs, harsh and wet. He retched, spitting a mouthful of dark, viscous blood onto the pristine floor.

The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by Lucas’s ragged, choking breaths and the distant thud of the horde against the hatch.

"What… what was that?" one of the guards whispered, horrified.

Valentina’s face, usually so impassive, was a mask of shock. Her violet eyes widened, staring at the small, crimson pool on the floor, then at Lucas’s pale, sweat-soaked face.

"He's bleeding," she breathed, her voice barely audible.

The Commander stepped forward, his expression still largely unreadable, but his amber eyes now held a flicker of genuine concern. He looked at the perfectly healed operative in the pod, who was now sitting up, bewildered but whole. Then he looked at Lucas, twitching and coughing on the floor, bleeding from the sheer cost of his gift.

"He… he truly bears the full toll," the Commander stated, a strange awe in his voice. "We have never witnessed such an unmitigated transfer. This is… unprecedented."

Lucas couldn't respond. He lay there, trembling, his chest feeling like a molten cavity, the taste of blood thick and metallic on his tongue. He focused on the System’s display, his vision blurry.

"Cellular degradation," Lucas wheezed, the words barely a whisper. "It’s… it's happening."

Valentina didn't need him to explain. She saw the amber warning text, now glowing with a sickly, urgent pulse in his periphery. She glanced at the Commander, her jaw tight.

"You got what you wanted," she said, her voice sharp and cold. "Now, we have a deal. We stay. And you find him a place to stabilize, or he dies right here, and you lose your only chance at a full-time healer."

The Commander looked from Lucas to Valentina, then back to the healed guard, who was now staring at Lucas with an intensity that seemed… unnatural. His amber eyes, which had initially been dazed, now held a strange, calculating glint. He watched Lucas’s agonizing struggles, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips.

The high-pitched scratching against the steel hatch intensified, a sound so sharp it felt like a needle being dragged across Lucas’s eardrums. He tried to scramble backward, but his legs felt like they were made of lead. "Valentina, that doesn't sound like those things from before."Valentina didn’t look back at him. Her eyes were fixed on the door, her hand already gripping the hilt of her blade. "It’s not. Those things outside are just hunger. This? This is a Seeker. It’s a specialized unit designed for one thing: finding high-value essence signatures. In other words, it’s here for you, Lucas.""For me?" Lucas gulped, his heart hammering against his bruised ribs. He gasped, his chest heaving, his fingers clawing at the dust-covered floorboards of the ruined office. The moon cast skeletal shadows across the room, turning the debris into grotesque, crouching figures."Easy, spark. You’re back in the land of the living," a voice said from the corner.Lucas blinked, trying to clear the haze. Valentina sat on a overturned desk a few feet away, her silhouette framed by the jagged window. Her violet eyes remained locked on him, cold and clinical. "Choices are for people who aren't currently carrying a death warrant in their own biology. You’re just a walking liability.""A liability," Lucas repeated, his voice bitter. He tried to push himself up, but his core felt like it was being shredded by invisible blades. "Glad we’re on the same page.""Don't get snarky. It’s a bad look for a battery."Behind her, the sound of heavy boots crunched against shattered glass. The scavengers—Jax and his crew—hadn't left.
