Zack was regretting bringing the wrong report here. His face was red, and he did not dare make a sound.
"Mr. Reddick, what's going on here?" That hot-tempered board member shouted again. He hated people committing fraud.
"Mr. Campbell, I... I made a mistake. I didn't know that Mr. Wayne was..."
Seeing that he was on the verge of tears, I stood up and took that form from before, presenting it to him.
"Mr. Reddick, please sign this form. Let's take advantage of the fact that you're still the assistant manager. Otherwise, I wouldn't know who to look for, since you're about to be fired," I said half-jokingly.
Zack's eyes were red. He grabbed my hand and begged, "David... No, Mr. Wayne, can you forgive me just this once, for old time's sake? I promise I'll change! Please give me another opportunity, Mr. Wayne!"
"Zack, you don't deserve my forgiveness. You're a stinky rat that ruined the atmosphere in the finance department with your presence. You should quickly pack your stuff and get ready to leave."
I shook off his hand and did not budge no matter how he begged. Mr. Campbell, tired of listening to his prattling, called the security and had him thrown out.
"It turns out that Mr. Wayne once worked at our company. That's great. And here I worried that you would have trouble understanding the circumstances!" said the chairman with a smile.
"I've spent two years in your company, and the stay was neither good nor bad. There is just too much bureaucracy, don't you think?"
The board members just smiled and said nothing. However, they were clear about what I meant.
They assured me that the formalities would be completed by tomorrow and that the entire staff would be present at the ceremony to mark my appointment as CEO of the company.
I nodded and said, "There is no need to make it a big deal. It's the thought that counts."
"How can that be? Mr. Wayne, you're the benefactor of our company. Don't worry, we'll deal with everything!"
When I left the office, I was in high spirits. Seeing Zack's expression towards the end was a real blessing. I returned to the research and investment department humming a song. By now, Jane had already received the news.
"We managed to get five million dollars? Heavens, that's great!"
Since she was in the middle of a call, I did not disturb her and waited until she was finished. She was all smiles, just like a rose in full bloom.
When she saw me, she excitedly ran in my direction to tell me the good news.
"David, did you know? The company managed to get the funds, a whole five million dollars! This might put an end to the liquidity crisis."
From her tone, it did not seem like she knew it was my doing, so I just replied casually, "Really? That sounds great."
"Hehe, I'm very happy. I feel great!"
The ever-serious section chief was now acting like a little girl. I found her adorable.
"Ma'am, what about your business dinner? Are you going to find an excuse and decline the invitation?" I asked.
"Perhaps it would be better if I go. Those clients are all big shots in their companies, and it would be unwise to burn bridges. What, do you really want to accompany me?"
Jane's radiant smile made my heart skip a beat.
"Of course! I can drink in your stead. After all, there is no telling what those guys might try to do."
"You have a point. In that case, let's go to my place. I'll change my clothes, and we'll set out from there!"
"Sure."
Before leaving the company, I told Victor that I would call him if anything important came up.
I was a little nervous when I sat in Jane's car as it was my first time going to her home.
The car stopped at an expensive neighborhood in the center of the city. Real estate prices had to be crazy here. Jane told me that she was the sole owner of the house, and that she lived alone.
We took the elevator and arrived at her apartment. Jane poured me a cup of water and told me to sit down while she went to her room to get ready.
"Ma'am, no need to bother with me. Just focus on getting ready for dinner," I said with a smile.
"We aren't in the company. Just call me Jane!"
"Sure, Jane."
The apartment was big, and the style minimalist. I sat on the sofa and grabbed a magazine.
About half an hour later, Jane came out of her room. I was stunned when I saw her.
She wore a gorgeous purple dress that left her collarbones exposed and a diamond necklace that further set off her beauty. The necklace shone brightly above her deep cleavage.
I found myself mesmerized by the sight. Although I knew that Jane was a beauty, she looked absolutely stunning right now, like a flower that you could not wait to make yours!
Seeing the passion in my eyes, her face flushed
"Do... Do I look good?" she asked, sounding a little nervous.
"Yes, absolutely. You look wonderful."
At my heartfelt praise, Jane smiled happily.
At eight o'clock, we arrived at the restaurant and found our way to the private room. Despite being right on time, the several men in the room were already eating. I even checked if we had gotten in the wrong room, but it did not seem to be the case.
Seeing Jane, they were stunned. They stared at her like hungry wolves gazing at a tender sheep. I found their lecherous gazes loathsome.
After a short moment of embarrassment, Jane said softly, "Gentlemen, it seems I'm a little late. Sorry for the wait."
"Heavens, so you're Miss Sullivan! I didn't expect you to be such a beauty. It surely is a surprise and a pleasant one at that. Come, have a seat!"
The man tried to grab Jane's hand, who subconsciously moved aside, leaving him in an awkward position.
I sat beside Jane and watched the hungry wolves carefully, trying to protect the only sheep at the table.
"Miss Sullivan, let me make the introductions. This is Cherry Corp's Deputy General Manager; this is Soaring Media's Chief Financial Officer; this is..."
Jane was forced to drink a cup of wine after each introduction. I wanted to help her with the drinking, but she signaled me under the table not to make trouble.
After several drinks, Jane's cheeks were flushed. I could almost see the drool on the corners of their mouths!
When they raised their glasses to propose another toast, I got up and said with a smile, "Gentlemen, she has drunk more than she can handle. How about I accompany you from now on?"
Hearing my words, they gave me a contemptuous look and ignored me.
"Miss Sullivan, let's have another toast. Then we can take a break before drinking again."
Unfortunately for them, it wasn't going to be so easy to ignore me. While they were clinking glasses, I said to the Deputy General Manager of Cherry Corp, "Sir, I'm also very happy to make your acquaintance. Let's toast to our meeting."
His face darkened immediately. Next to him, the Chief Financial Officer of Soaring Media lost his temper. He said to Jane, "Miss Sullivan, is this someone from your company? He doesn't understand the custom at all!"
"Ah, he's my secretary. I brought him along because I wanted him to get some experience. It's his first time participating in such an event. Please pay him no heed."
"Hmph, how can we pay him no heed? We were having so much fun, but he ruined everything!"
Jane signaled me to sit down, but I did not move.
"I'm sorry, gentlemen. It's just that my boss has drunk too much. Any more and she might faint."
"So what? Do you think we'll cause her harm?"
"No, that's not it. I was just afraid that someone with not too kind intentions might try to take advantage of her."
"You..."
The tension was rising. Jane kept signaling me to stop with her eyes, but I paid her no mind.
"Miss Sullivan, I feel like you aren't negotiating in good faith. I think it's better to stop this collaboration here."
One of them pretended to leave with a face filled with rage in an attempt to make Jane yield. It took me just a glance to see through his real intentions, but Jane was a little drunk and nowhere as clear-minded as before.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Kane. Let us drink then."
After another two cups, Jane's eyes lost their focus. She was at her limit.
Satisfied, that big shot sat back. Then, they talked endlessly, discussing everything, from bras to underwear. The only thing they did not discuss was work-related stuff.
Their frivolous jokes put Jane in an awkward spot several times.
I could not bear it anymore and spoke again. "Gentlemen, maybe it's better if we get back to business. You know what's going on with our company, so if you're willing to invest, I can guarantee that you'll double in six months!"

When I finished, everyone at the table erupted in laughter. Cherry Corp's Deputy General Manager even spat out his food."Double the money? Heavens! I think you drank too much. Do you think we don't know what's going on with your company? You're facing a liquidity crisis and are almost on the verge of bankruptcy! Yet, you're talking about profit?""He's right. No matter how much money we toss at your company, it's unlikely to turn into profit.""Today, we had dinner with you because of Miss Sullivan. We hoped to give your company a helping hand while we were at it. But who would have expected that a useless bum would ruin all the fun!"I was a bit angry after their repeated insults. I said coldly, "You should be a bit more respectful.""Or what? I'm going to do whatever the hell I want! I can't believe that a small secretary like you is putting on airs at this meeting. Careful, I need to make just a call for your boss to fire you!""I'm Miss Sullivan's secretary. No one other than her

When I got downstairs, Victor was there waiting for me. Next to him were several bodyguards wearing black suits and sunglasses. They were carrying large suitcases, which I assumed were filled with cash."Master, we made you wait.""Don't worry about that. Anyway, the company is going through a liquidity crisis, and I wanted to provide them with the funds. These five million dollars should be enough.""Sounds good. However, I feel like you lack something. Status.""Status?""Yes. I've made some preparations, and this is your new business card."When I saw the business card, I was startled. He acted as if he did not see me and continued with his lecture. It seemed he was promoted while I was away. Otherwise, there was no way he could be so arrogant."You have to always put the company's interest first. Your personal interest comes after, got it? D
