The cold steel of the knife bit deeper into Ethan’s throat, a sharp reminder that his "fresh start" had a very short expiration date. Above them, the distant shouts of the scavengers echoed off the decaying brick walls of the alley.

"I... I really hate Thursdays," Ethan wheezed, his eyes wide and pleading.

The woman didn't blink. Her grip on his collar remained iron-tight. "Thursdays? You drop from a ventilation shaft onto my ribs, and your only defense is a complaint about the calendar?"

"It’s a bad day for me," Ethan gasped, his voice straining against the blade. "I woke up in a freezer, lost thirty years of sleep, and now I’m being hunted by a guy who really wants to keep my head as a trophy. Can we skip the interrogation and go straight to the 'don't-kill-the-stranger' part?"

Lyra’s eyes narrowed, scanning his face with surgical precision. "You don't look like a scavenger. You look like a laboratory test subject that forgot to die."

"I’m more of a 'wrong place, wrong time' kind of guy," Ethan lied, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"The boss back there called out a name," she whispered, her gaze dropping to the scar on his jaw. "Ethan. The Arch-Betrayer. The man who supposedly died in the collapse."

"Ethan? Never heard of him," Ethan chuckled nervously, his voice cracking. "Sounds like a guy with a lot of baggage. I’m just... Dave. Or Steve. Let's go with Steve."

"Steve," she mocked, pressing the knife harder. "Steve has the exact same bone structure as a ghost with a five-hundred-thousand-credit bounty on his head. Explain that."

"Diet and exercise?" Ethan offered weakly. "Look, if I were the famous guy, would I be lying on the ground while a beautiful woman threatens my jugular? I’d be, I don’t know, doing something cool. Like fighting back."

"You’re pathetic," she hissed, though the pressure of the blade eased by a hair.

"I prefer the term 'tactically flexible,'" he countered. "Besides, if you kill me, you’re just one person in a dark alley. If you help me, we both might actually leave this sector with our skins intact. Those guys are ten feet away, by the way."

Heavy boots crunched on glass nearby. A beam of red light swept across the mouth of the alley, bathing them in a crimson glow.

"Spread out!" the boss’s voice bellowed, much closer now. "He couldn't have gone far. The drop killed him or crippled him. Check the perimeter!"

Lyra looked toward the alley entrance, then back at Ethan. She shoved him sideways, tucking him into the dark shadow behind a stack of rusted shipping crates.

"If you make a single sound," she whispered, her voice a razor, "I’ll stop worrying about the bounty and just enjoy the silence."

"Understood. Silence is my middle name," Ethan whispered back. "Wait, it’s actually Steve."

"Shut up, Steve."

The scavengers were right there, their armor clanking. The hound emitted a low, electronic whine, sniffing the air.

"Sir, the sensors are acting up," one of the thugs said. "There’s a high-level heat spike nearby."

"It’s the stasis sickness," the boss grunted. "The idiot is probably leaking thermal energy like a busted radiator. Flush him out."

A metallic thunk echoed as something heavy hit the ground between the crates. A flare. A blinding, magnesium-white light erupted, turning the alley into a stark, high-contrast nightmare.

"They're behind the crates!" the scavenger shouted.

"Run," Lyra hissed, abandoning all caution.

"Which way?" Ethan scrambled to his feet, his muscles screaming in protest.

"Any way but here!"

Lyra sprinted toward the far wall, but the path was blocked by two armed figures. Ethan looked at the ground, spotted a jagged piece of rebar, and did the only thing his panicked brain could muster. He let out a high-pitched, ear-splitting scream—not a tactical shout, but the genuine, unadulterated shriek of a man who realized he was entirely out of his depth.

The scavengers flinched, their focus snapping toward the bizarre sound.

"What the hell was that?" one yelled.

Ethan hurled the rebar at a stack of oil drums. They toppled with a deafening, echoing clatter, drawing the huntress’s gaze away from their position.

"Now!" Lyra grabbed his arm, yanked him toward the ground, and pried open a heavy, rusted sewer grate.

"You've got to be kidding me," Ethan choked out. "The sewer? Really?"

"Do you want to die in the light or hide in the muck?" she barked, kicking him down into the darkness before diving in after him.

The grate slammed shut just as a volley of bullets peppered the spot where they had stood seconds before. They hit the shallow, freezing runoff of the underground tunnels with a sickening splash.

Ethan scrambled to his knees, gasping for air, his clothes soaked in foul-smelling sludge. Lyra landed gracefully, her knife already out and pointed toward the gloom of the tunnel ahead. She was breathing hard, her eyes glowing in the dim light reflected from above.

The world above them was silent again, save for the muffled, angry curses of the scavengers losing their prey.

Lyra wiped a smudge of filth from her cheek, her eyes fixed on Ethan. She stepped toward him, the blade held at his eye level.

"The theatrics," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low hum. "The scream, the 'Steve' act, the sheer clumsiness. You’re either the best actor I’ve ever met, or you’re exactly who they say you are."

Ethan held up his hands, shivering in the cold air. "I told you, I'm just a guy."

"A guy who knows how to trigger a distraction at the exact right second," she countered, closing the distance until the point of her knife touched his chest. "I’m done with the games. Who are you, really?"

Ethan looked into her eyes, searching for a way out, but found only a reflection of his own desperate situation. "If I tell you the truth, will you promise not to kill me until I finish my story?"

"That depends," she whispered, tilting her head. "Is the truth worth the effort of dragging your corpse through the sewers?"

It was a thick, heavy silence—the kind that only existed in places meant to kill you."Tell me that was just a vapor lock," Ethan said. His voice was steady, but his eyes were locked on the dashboard."It was a vapor lock," Kaelen repeated, his hands still white-knuckling the steering wheel. Not even a greasy smear in the lines." Kaelen slammed his palms against the wheel, the sound echoing flatly in the cramped cab. "I told you! "We’re losing compression in three cylinders! Ethan, this isn't a long-haul vehicle! It’s a yard dog! It was never meant to cross the flats!""It’s what we have! Adjust the mixture!""With what? Lyra’s breathing had turned into a rhythmic, wet rattle that set his teeth on edge. Kaelen shoved Ethan toward a narrow gap between two warehouse units. "Third bay. They keep the logistics runners there. Most are stripped for parts, but some still have juice!"Ethan didn’t argue. He didn't lower the submachine gun. The barrel remained centered on Ethan’s solar plexus. "And I don’t need it to be perfect to hit him from six feet away. You know what he is. You know what he represents.""I know what he looks like," Ethan interrupted, his voice intentionally level. He kept his palms open and away from his waist.
