The Corvette's engine purred softly as Nelson pulled into the familiar driveway. The old house looked different now, not because anything had changed physically, but because he saw it through new eyes. The chipped paint, the slightly crooked porch step, the overgrown garden his mother had always wanted to tend but never had the energy for.

He killed the engine and sat for a moment, letting the silence settle around him. This was one of the moments he'd been working toward since the system firs

The room was so quiet that Nelson could hear the sound of blood pumping to and fro his head, neither of them said anything.Hibino was still staring at the phone screen like it might change its search answer if he looked hard enough and long enough, and Nelson had gone somewhere else entirely in thought, somewhere behind his eyes like a world of his own, he just stood there working through something."How," Hibino finally said, dragging the word out. "How does a company owned by the smugs you fired a month ago know about a deal that's only existed for, what, like two days?""That's the part I keep coming back to, I'm trying to come up with a logical explanation for this," Nelson said. He started pacing the empty unit, his footsteps echoing off the bare concrete and steel. "It was just; Me, you, and Maya… That's it. Nobody else knew a single word or detail about the embassy before this morning.""Well it wasn't me," Hibino said immediately, hands up trying to cement his innocence."Duh

By the time the lecture hall emptied out, a small crowd had already gathered around the main notice board in the hallway. Dean Rasheem Casey had personally pinned up a fresh sheet of paper, and in bold, unmistakable lettering, it listed the dates for the final examinations.Graduation was close now. Closer than it had ever felt before.Nelson stood in front of the board with his hands tucked into his pockets, staring at the date circled at the top of the page.Hibino wandered up beside him, staring at the same sheet."I guess we'll actually graduate soon," Hibino said, almost to himself. "And this'll all be over."Nelson nodded slowly. "Yeah… I'm running out of time, Hibz, I can feel it."Hibino turned to him, his easy expression shifting into something more guarded. "Running out of time for what?"They started walking, side by side, out of the building and into the afternoon sunlight and heat rays."My mom," Nelson said finally, his voice quieter than usual. "If I don't get her help

  • Chapter Fifty-One

Before 8am the next morning, Nelson had already gotten up. Taking time to go through the information Maya Lin had provided for him on Dr. Gregory Ortega. The information contained wait-list, booking contact info, testimonials and all worth not. When he was done going through everything, he prepared for school and in just under an hour he was already out the door.On arriving at school, he immediately made a beeline to his designated lecture hall. Immediately he walked through the door of the room, he saw that the hall was packed with engineering students and there was barely any seat left. Using his keen eyes, he spotted an empty seat in one of the middle rows and as fate would have it, it was directly beside Derek Thompson and his gang.As he took his seat, still smirking inwardly, he muttered to himself, “You better fulfil your promise, Derek. Otherwise…” The thought trailed off as he casually glanced around the room.Suddenly, the clear voice of Dean Rasheem Casey rang out, cuttin

Nelson stared at his phone screen with his thumb hovering over Vivian's contact for the eighth time that morning. The call log showed seven consecutive attempts, each one ending in the same mechanical voicemail greeting."Come on, pick up," he muttered, pressing the call button again. The phone line rang once and twice, then three times. He was already about to give up, his thumb already moved towards the end call button, when the ringing stopped and a soft click signaled the line connecting. For the first three seconds, it was utterly silent. Nelson and Vivian trying to string out the other to talk first."Vivian?" Nelson said, eventually giving in. He kept his voice and tone casual, making sure not to sound too serious. "Hey. It's been a while."Another three seconds of silence followed. Then a slow, measured exhale on the other end, the kind of sound someone makes when they're deciding whether a conversation is worth their time or whether they'd just yell at the person abruptly."O

Nelson's eyes shot open before his alarm even had the chance to go off, his mind already racing through everything that needed to happen that morning. There was a project to prepare for, and he wasn't about to waste a single hour of the lead he'd been handed. He was out of bed and into the shower within seconds, the water doing little to slow down the thoughts stacking up in his head. By the time he came back out, toweling his hair dry, he was already half-dressed in his mind.He jogged down the stairs two at a time and found his mother in the kitchen, humming quietly to herself as something sizzled on the stove. Irene was nowhere in sight, she was probably still upstairs, or already gone out to school."Morning, Mom," he said, crossing the kitchen to press a quick kiss to her cheek before snatching his car keys off the counter."Breakfast will be ready in a few minutes," she said, not even turning around, used to his usual morning run of events by now. "Sit down for a bit.""Can't, M
