As silence fell over the garden, everyone took in the devastation left in the wake of the battle. The once-beautiful sanctuary—bursting with rare celestial blossoms, glowing crystal fountains, and whispering trees—was now reduced to rubble and scorched earth. The scent of ash and crushed petals hung in the air, thick and bitter.

A heavy feeling of guilt settled in Ethan's chest as he observed the sorrow on the faces of Sophia and her family. He lowered his head, took a deep breath, and slowly dismissed the golden knights standing guard before him. With a soft shimmer of light, the two holy protectors vanished into thin air.

Facing Alaric and the others, Ethan bowed deeply. “It was my fault… I’m truly sorry for destroying the garden. I didn’t intend to bring harm to something so precious.”

The words were sincere. He didn’t care for etiquette, but he did care about those who had done no wrong—and Sophia clearly treasured this place.

Alaric looked at Ethan with calm seriousness and said, “What do you think? Do you want to become part of this family?”Ethan blinked. The words hit him like a punch to the gut—not because they hurt, but because they were so wildly out of place. He stood there, staring at the Valtair family with a completely speechless expression. A warm breeze swept past, rustling his torn clothes and the ash-ridden remains of the garden. The chaos of battle still hung in the air, but somehow, that one question had shifted the tone entirely. This is not how it’s supposed to go.“This is completely wrong,” Ethan muttered under his breath, shaking his head in disbelief. “This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.”Lucas tilted his head, confused. “What do you mean, Ethan?”Ethan exhaled sharply and raised a hand, pointing around as he spoke. “Well… first of all, I’m the one who’s supposed to ask for Sophia’s hand. You—” he pointed at Alaric—“you’re supposed to scowl at me, say I’m a nobody, not worthy of your

  • Chapter 38 : He is Ethan

Both Ethan and Alaric froze at the sound of that voice. At the same time, as if by instinct, both muttered in unison: “Sophia.” Lucas, Solmira, Lin, and Harry all turned sharply, their expressions painted with shock. Harry was the first to spot her—and gasped. There, standing within a glowing dome of golden light, was Sophia. She stood with red eyes, her eyes brimming with tears, and her voice trembled with desperation as she cried out: “Both of you, stop fighting! Please—just stop!” As soon as she appeared, Lucas, Solmira, Lin, and I rushed toward her. Lucas reached her first—but was suddenly blasted backward by a wave of golden light the moment he got too close. > “Lucas!” Lin shouted, rushing to him. > “What happened?!” Solmira demanded. Lucas groaned, rubbing his arm. “I… I couldn’t get through the barrier. It just rejected me.” Solmira scowled. “Then we’ll just break it open—” > “No, wait!” Sophia interrupted. “Don’t! This must be Ethan’s doing. He must’ve

The light became so intense that all the weaker cultivators had to shield their eyes. It was as if a second sun had appeared right before them. But it didn’t last long. As the divine brilliance began to fade, so too did the searing pain in their bodies. Slowly, hesitantly, people began to open their eyes—blinking, squinting—trying to make sense of what they were seeing. At first, their vision blurred. But then, when clarity returned, their mouths opened wide enough to swallow an egg. Across the entirety of Star City, silence reigned. Even the wild beasts in the forest, normally howling and screeching at this hour, fell deathly still. The streets were quiet. The mansions, the markets, the skies—everything and everyone froze. And then, a scream—not from one, but from many—shattered the silence. > “Whaaat…” “What is that!?” “It’s… it’s an angel!” “Am I dreaming? Someone slap me!” “By the heavens above… is this divine judgment?” “T-that thing… it came from a spell?”

Though he appeared calm on the surface, the flames surrounding him burned hotter than ever. He was shock by Ethan regenerating his arm but it haven’t calmed him—it had only stoked the inferno further. A storm had been brewing in the man’s heart. The once-dignified swordmaster now looked ready to unleash everything. From a distance, Lucas, Solmira, Lin, and Harry watched in stunned silence. The effects of the healing potions they’d taken were beginning to work, but their minds remained dazed. The graden fallen silent. Sophia’s father, Grand Duke Alaric Valtair, stood motionless on the far end of the courtyard. His regal crimson robes fluttered gently in the aftermath of the destruction, and yet, his gaze remained locked—on the ruins of the once beloved garden, and also on his injured children sprawled across the shattered earth. He had not interfered during the earlier clash. Not when the stranger had crashed into the sacred garden his beloved wife had nurtured with tender love and care. Not even when the same stranger—Ethan—had fought back fiercely, wounding his children with frightening skill and power. But now, as his mind replayed the cherished memory of his wife planting those same lilies with glowing smiles and laughter, and the maids singing while tending to the saplings, also his young children playing under the shade of the flowering trees... ...now,now it was all of it reduced to rubble and dust and his children, who he had promise to protect even if it m
