Chapter 7: The Shipyard Trap
The white linen of Maximilian’s fresh shirt felt like a shroud against his skin as he stepped out of the shadows of a rusted crane. The shipyard at Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan was a graveyard of industry, where the salt of the Java Sea gnawed at the bones of old freighter ships. The air was thick, tasting of rust and stagnant water.
Max adjusted his cuffs, his eyes scanning the perimeter. Silence was the only thing greeting him.
"I’m here, Arabella!" Max called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls of a nearby warehouse. "You wanted a show. I’m standing center stage."
A flicker of light sparked inside Warehouse 28. Max didn't hesitate. He moved with a low, predatory grace, his hand hovering near the small of his back where a fresh Glock rested. He pushed through the heavy sliding door, the hinges screaming in protest.
In the center of the cavernous space, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of a single overhead bulb, sat Arabella. She was tied to a heavy wooden chair, her hands bound behind her.
"You’re late," Arabella said. Her voice didn't tremble. She looked up at him, her hair messy but her eyes disturbingly calm. "I was starting to think the canal water finally got to your head."
Max didn't move toward her yet. He scanned the rafters, the dark corners, the stacks of wooden pallets. "Are you hurt?"
"My pride is a bit bruised. The ropes are a bit tight," she replied, tilting her head. "But you look good in white, Max. It suits the 'dead man walking' aesthetic you've got going on."
"Who did this?" Max asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble.
"I did," a high-pitched, nasal voice rang out from the darkness above the mezzanine.
Everett Suryanegara stepped into the light, looking down at Max with a grin that made his skin crawl. He wasn't alone. At least a dozen men in tactical gear emerged from the shadows, their rifles leveled at Max’s chest.
"Everett," Max said, not missing a beat. "I thought we had an understanding. You stay in your lane, and I don't crush your windpipe."
"The lanes changed, Max! You’re a fugitive now! The police want you, your aunt wants you, and frankly, I’m tired of looking at your face," Everett spat, leaning over the railing. "Did you really think she’d lead you to some secret resistance? She led you to a slaughterhouse."
Max looked back at Arabella. She was watching him, a faint, unreadable smile on her lips. "Is that true, Arabella? Was the vault just a way to keep me warm until the trap was set?"
"You’re a big boy, Max. You know how the game works," she said softly. "Information is the only currency that matters. And right now, your head is worth more than a port concession."
"You heard her!" Everett laughed, clapping his hands. "Even the girl knows you're a bad investment. Now, put the gun on the floor, or I’ll have my men turn you into a colander."
"You brought a lot of firepower for one man, Everett," Max noted, his eyes tracking the shooters. "Feeling insecure?"
"I’m feeling thorough! Do you have any idea how much I had to pay to get these guys? These aren't the idiots from the airport. These are professionals," Everett said, gesturing to the men. "Now. The gun. Do it!"
Max slowly reached behind his back, his fingers wrapping around the grip of the Glock. "You know, Everett, my father always said you were a bottom-feeder. He said you’d wait for someone else to do the hunting, then swim in to pick at the scraps."
"Your father is dead! And soon, you’ll be a footnote!" Everett screamed. "Kill him! Now!"
The warehouse erupted.
Max dived behind a stack of steel drums just as a hail of lead tore through the air where he’d been standing. He didn't just hide; he fired back, two precise shots that sent one of Everett’s mercenaries tumbling from the mezzanine.
"Get him! Move up!" Everett’s voice was frantic now, the bravado slipping.
"Is that all you've got, you coward?" Max yelled over the roar of gunfire. He rolled to his left, sliding behind a heavy shipping container as bullets sparked off the metal. "You’re going to need more men!"
"Shut up! Just die already!" Everett ducked behind a pillar, waving his arms at his team. "Flank him! Use the grenades if you have to!"
Arabella was still sitting in the middle of the floor, remarkably untouched by the chaos. "You’re making a mess, Max! You always were a bit clumsy!"
"I’m a bit busy at the moment, Arabella!" Max shouted, popping out to trade shots with a shooter near the back entrance. "Maybe you could help by staying out of the line of fire!"
"Oh, don't worry about me," she called back. Her voice was chillingly melodic amidst the sound of breaking glass and screaming lead. "I’m exactly where I need to be."
Max slammed a fresh magazine into his pistol. He was pinned. The mercenaries were moving in a disciplined pincer movement, closing the distance. He could hear their boots thudding against the concrete, the metallic clack of their weapons.
"Max! Give it up!" Everett called out, his voice shaking with adrenaline. "You’re out of ammo, you’re out of friends, and you’re out of time! Just come out and I’ll make it quick. I might even give you a nice funeral!"
"I’ve always hated funerals, Everett! Too much crying and bad catering!" Max replied. He peeked around the edge of the container, catching a glimpse of a red laser dot dancing across the rusted surface just inches from his face.
"He’s behind the blue box! Fire!" one of the mercenaries barked.
A grenade thudded against the floor nearby. Max scrambled back, covering his head as the blast shattered the remaining windows and sent a cloud of dust and debris into the air. His ears were ringing, the world turning into a blurred mess of grey and fire.
"Did we get him?" Everett’s voice sounded muffled, distant.
Max crawled through the smoke, his lungs burning. He reached the edge of the container, gasping for air. He looked up, trying to find a way out, but the red laser dot returned. This time, it didn't dance.
It settled squarely on the center of Max’s forehead.
He froze. He could feel the cold precision of the sniper’s aim. One twitch, one breath, and it was over.
"End of the line, Boss," a voice said.
Max looked toward the center of the room. The smoke was clearing.
Arabella was no longer in the chair. The ropes lay in a heap on the floor, severed cleanly. She stood tall, smoothing out the wrinkles in a new black jacket she must have had hidden. She wasn't looking at Everett. She was looking at Max.
"Arabella?" Max whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs.
In her right hand, she held a small, black remote detonator. Her thumb rested lightly over the red button.
Everett stepped down from the mezzanine, his face pale as he looked at her. "What are you doing? I told you to wait for my signal!"
"Your signal?" Arabella turned her head, a cold, mocking smile playing on her lips. "Everett, you really are a special kind of stupid. Did you think I was working for you?"
"I paid you! I gave you the codes!" Everett stammered, stepping back. "We had a deal!"
"We had a conversation. There’s a difference," Arabella said. She turned back to Max, her eyes like chips of ice. "You were right, Max. The people I work for are getting impatient. They wanted to see if you were worth the trouble of saving."
"And?" Max asked, his voice steady despite the red dot still burning on his skin. "What’s the verdict?"
Arabella stepped toward him, the detonator glinting in the dim light. The mercenaries didn't fire. They stood like statues, their eyes fixed on her.
"The verdict is that you’re a survivor," she whispered, her voice carrying through the silent warehouse. "But survival isn't enough to run this city. You need to be willing to burn it all down."
"Arabella, put that down," Everett whimpered. "We can talk about this!"
"Goodbye, Everett," Arabella said, her smile widening into something truly predatory. "You were a boring footnote after all."
She looked at Max, her thumb depressing the button halfway. "Are you ready for the fireworks, Max? Because this is where the real game begins."

Then, the world turned into a cold, crushing weight.Max hit the water first, the impact knocking the air from his lungs. He felt the sludge of the canal swallow him, the taste of salt and oil filling his mouth. Chapter 5: Deadly Countdown"Try to keep up, Max. It’d be a shame if you died before I decided whether to kill you myself."The elevator doors hissed shut on Arabella’s smirk, plunging them into a descent that felt like a fall into an abyss. Max checked his watch. Four minutes and forty seconds."Orion, tell me the engine is running," Max snapped into his comms."It’s screaming, Boss. We’re in the lobby basement. Get your asses down here," Orion’s voice crackled back, tight with the kind of stress that only comes when millions of dollars are about to evaporate.Max glanced at Arabella. She was leaning against the mirrored wall of the elevator, casually checking the weight of the Sig Sauer. She looked like she was heading to a gala, not a suicide mission."You’re awfully calm for someone about to drive into a wall of C4," Max said."I’ve always liked fireworks, Max. Besides, if we die, I don’t have to worry about my dry cleaning bill for this dress," she replied, her eyes tracking the

Chapter 4: The Mole's WhispersThe descent down the maintenance ladder was a blur of cold steel and the rhythmic clatter of boots against metal. Max hit the floor of the darkened basement garage first, spinning around with his borrowed pistol raised. Arabella dropped beside him a second later, landing with the silent grace of a shadow."My car’s in bay four," Max whispered, his eyes scanning the rows of parked luxury sedans. "Orion should have moved it by now."Arabella checked the Sig Sauer’s safety, her expression unreadable. "You sure your driver didn't sell you out too? Lucius seemed pretty confident about having the exits covered.""Orion’s the only thing in this city I don't have to buy," Max said.A pair of headlights cut through the gloom. A reinforced black SUV roared toward them, tires screaming as it drifted into a halt. The door flew open, and Orion leaned out, a submachine gun slung over his shoulder."Get in! Now!" Chapter 3: Burning ThresholdMax stood in the hallway for exactly three seconds before he kicked the steel door back open. He didn't look for her on the street; he looked up.A metal fire escape groaned three floors above."You're not getting away that easy!" Max shouted, his voice echoing off the damp brick walls. He didn't wait for an answer. He leapt, catching the bottom rung of the ladder and swinging himself up with the practiced ease of a man who had spent his summers in military camps rather than beach resorts. By the time he reached the roof, Arabella was standing by the ledge, the wind whipping her emerald dress around her legs like a silken flame."I wasn't running, Max," she said, not even turning around. "I was leading. I wanted to see if you’d follow.""I’m a predator, Arabella. Following is what I do. Usually right before I bite.""Is that a threat or an invitation?" She turned t

Chapter 2: The Scent of Roses and GunpowderThe scent of expensive tobacco and French perfume hung heavy in the air of The Obsidian Room, an underground club so exclusive it didn't bother with a sign on the door. Maximilian Adiwangsa adjusted the cuffs of his midnight-blue tuxedo, the fabric a stark contrast to the blood-soaked linen he’d been wearing only hours before."You’re sure she’s here?" Max asked, his voice barely a whisper over the low hum of the cello playing on the stage.Orion, standing half a step behind him, scanned the room with eyes that never stayed still. "My contact at the door confirmed it. Emerald dress, no date. She’s at the bar, Max. But you’ve got company first.""Who?""Everett Suryanegara. Table four, right by the VIP railing.
