Silence lay across the Central Martial Square like a blanket of frozen lead.

On the shattered flagstones of the ring, the three broken shards of the Frost-Biting Sword still hummed with dying frost Qi. Beside the stone pillar, eighteen-year-old Murong Feng lay crumpled in his torn sapphire silks, coughing up frothy crimson onto his chest, his eyes rolling back in stunned unconsciousness. The proud heir of the Murong Clan, celebrated as Border Cloud City's rising sword dragon, had been cast down like a stray hound.

And at the center of the stage stood Lu Chen.

At seventeen, the youth looked untouched by mortal dust. The autumn sun traced the elegant contours of his jaw and high brow, illuminating skin that held the peerless luster of pristine jade. His dark hair drifted lightly in the settling wind, and his hands rested loosely within his azure sleeves. There was no boastful cheer, no wild roar of triumph. His handsome countenance remained as deep and tranquil as an ancient lake, possessing an otherworldly poise that commanded reverence from every breath in the square.

"Brother Lu!" Kuang Yan’s thunderous roar finally shattered the paralysis.

The eighteen-year-old bronze giant vaulted onto the stage, his iron broadsword clattering against his armor. Kuang Yan slammed a massive, calloused hand onto Lu Chen’s shoulder, laughing so hard the stone platform rattled. "Hahaha! Two fingers! You snapped that peacock's steel with two bare fingers! Let’s see who in Border Cloud City dares call you a sluggard again!"

Kuang Yan’s booming voice snapped the crowd out of their trance, sparking a roar that nearly blew the clouds from the valley.

"He won! Senior Brother Lu actually crossed two minor realms and won barehanded!"

"He didn't just win—he used the Murong Clan's own frost sword intent to shatter their heirloom! Did you see that celestial frost from his fingertips? That was genuine Sword Intent!"

"Heavenly comprehension... He is seventeen years old! How could a mortal possess such divine talent?!"

Among the disciples, countless young maidens looked upon Lu Chen with starry, breathless gazes. His ethereal handsomeness, paired with such terrifying martial talent, struck directly at the hearts of the outer court disciples who had spent years admiring arrogant clan scions. Compared to Lu Chen’s tranquil immortal grace, the proud sons of the noble houses seemed petty and crude.

Yet, amid the celebratory uproar, a vicious chill settled over the southern VIP seats.

"Little beast! You dare maim my Murong Clan's heir and destroy our family treasure?!"

A furious roar erupted like a thunderclap. From the Murong Clan's observation box, an elder clad in deep cobalt robes launched himself through the air. Murong Hai, the second elder of the Murong Clan and an expert at the Seventh Layer of Qi Condensation, descended toward the ring like a venomous hawk. His fingers curled into icy claws, wreathed in thick, swirling frost that threatened to tear Lu Chen’s skull from his shoulders!

"Second Elder Murong, halt!" Instructor Zhao blurted out, pale with terror, but was too slow to intervene.

Murong Hai’s heart was consumed by murderous fury. Murong Feng was the future of their bloodline, groomed with tens of thousands of spirit stones. Now, his meridians were shaken, his sword shattered, and his Dao heart fractured before thousands of witnesses. Worse, the Murong Clan’s prestige in Border Cloud City had been stamped into the dirt. If this seventeen-year-old orphan was allowed to grow, the Murong Clan’s dominance in the frontier would crumble within years!

"Die!" Murong Hai snarled, his Seventh Layer frost claw descending with crushing weight!

Lu Chen’s obsidian eyes narrowed, the starlit scripture in his sea of consciousness flaring with warning. But before he could channel his Primordial Qi to evade, a clear, crystalline sword hum rang across the heavens.

SHIIIING!

A streak of pale-blue sword light, pure and razor-sharp as falling glacial ice, descended from the high terrace!

CLANGGG!

The sword light sliced cleanly between Murong Hai and Lu Chen, gouging a three-foot crevice into the stone ring. The frigid shockwave forced the Seventh Layer elder to flip backward through the air, landing heavily on his feet with his cobalt robes shredded at the cuffs.

"Who dares?!" Murong Hai roared, shaking off the numbing frost on his hands.

"I dare."

A voice as cold and clear as frozen jade echoed across the square.

From the high terrace, a figure drifted downward like an immortal fairy descending from the ninth heaven. Chu Qingxuan’s snow-white robes billowed softly in the wind, her Millennium Cold Jade scabbard gleaming at her slender waist. At seventeen years old, her suet-jade face was flawless and aloof, devoid of mortal warmth. Her clear, starlike eyes pinned Murong Hai where he stood, carrying the unyielding weight of the Chu Clan’s peerless sword lineage.

"Chu Qingxuan!" Murong Hai gritted his teeth, his eyes flashing with wariness. "This is an affair between my Murong Clan and that brat! What right does the Chu Clan have to interfere?!"

Chu Qingxuan landed lightly beside Lu Chen, her delicate scent of mountain frost and wild orchids drifting past his shoulder. Her slender figure stood poised and resolute, her voice ringing across the silent pavilion.

"This is Canglan Academy’s Autumn Assessment," Chu Qingxuan said, her tone devoid of emotion. "The Martial Ring is governed by academy rules. Both parties accepted the challenge before elders and disciples alike. Elder Murong, if your clan cannot afford to lose, do you intend to tear up the academy’s charter in front of three thousand witnesses?"

"You—!" Murong Hai choked on his rage, his chest heaving.

Before he could speak another word, another terrifying presence descended upon the stage. Elder Tie of the Discipline Hall dropped onto the ring with the force of an iron boulder, his Seventh Layer peak aura surging outward and pressing Murong Hai back three paces.

"Murong Hai!" Elder Tie barked, his weathered eyes blazing with fury. "You dare attack an academy disciple on my martial stage? Do you take the Discipline Hall as corpses?!"

Murong Hai clenched his fists until his fingernails bit into his flesh. He looked at Elder Tie, then at Chu Qingxuan standing resolutely beside Lu Chen, and finally at the thousands of disciples watching with open contempt.

Border Cloud City was governed by four major clans and Canglan Academy. By violating the assessment rules in broad daylight, Murong Hai had backed the Murong Clan into a political abyss. If he struck again, he would provoke both the Chu Clan and the Academy’s direct wrath.

"Good... very good!" Murong Hai hissed, his venomous eyes shifting to Lu Chen. "Lu Chen, do not think having the academy's protection will shield you forever. Border Cloud City is vast, but mountains are steep and roads are narrow. We shall see how far a boy with no clan backing can walk!"

With a sweep of his cobalt sleeve, Murong Hai scooped up the unconscious Murong Feng, grabbed the three fragments of the Frost-Biting Sword, and vanished toward the academy gates in a streak of blue light.

The Murong faction disciples hurriedly scattered like frightened rats, their arrogant posturing thoroughly erased.

Elder Tie turned toward Lu Chen, his stern, wrinkled face softening into rare respect. "Outer Disciple Lu Chen. In today's assessment, you displayed a Flawless Heaven-Grade Meridian and defeated a Fifth Layer opponent barehanded. By decree of the Discipline Hall and Council of Elders, you are hereby granted promotion to Inner Disciple, with full access to the Hidden Scripture Pavilion!"

The crowd broke into thunderous applause. Disciples bowed their heads in genuine respect as Lu Chen calmly accepted his new silver-trimmed inner disciple jade token.

Beside him, Chu Qingxuan turned her gaze toward Lu Chen. Up close, her glacial beauty was breathtaking. Her pale cheeks held a faint, natural radiance, and her starlike eyes, usually frozen to the world, held an intense curiosity.

"The strike you used to shatter the sword," Chu Qingxuan spoke softly, her voice meant only for his ears. "It wasn't a standard martial art. That was Moon-Cleaving Frost Intent... an ancient sword concept lost to our frontier for centuries. Where did you learn it?"

Lu Chen met her cold, lovely gaze without averting his eyes. A faint, knowing smile curved his lips. At seventeen, standing beside the academy’s most celebrated beauty, his presence was neither servile nor eager; he looked upon her as an equal walking the same boundless Dao.

"Senior Sister Chu has sharp eyes," Lu Chen replied calmly, his voice smooth as flowing spring water. "Frost is born of heaven and earth, not invented by man. If one listens to the wind beneath the willow tree, the ice speaks for itself."

Chu Qingxuan froze slightly, her starlike eyes widening as she processed his words. To ordinary disciples, it sounded like cryptic riddles. But to a sword prodigy who had cultivated frost arts since childhood, those simple words hinted at a terrifying truth: Lu Chen hadn't inherited an ancient art—he had comprehended it directly from the laws of nature!

A rare, fleeting smile touched Chu Qingxuan’s cherry-tinted lips—a sight so breathtaking that Kuang Yan blinked in disbelief beside them.

"Listening to the willow..." Chu Qingxuan murmured, stepping back with an elegant nod. "Lu Chen, the Murong Clan will not swallow this humiliation quietly. Their Patriarch, Murong Ba, is at the Ninth Layer of Qi Condensation and holds sway over the city guard. Be careful."

"Thank you for the reminder, Senior Sister," Lu Chen replied, clasping his hands lightly in courtesy.

As Chu Qingxuan turned and glided back toward the pavilion like a snow fairy, Kuang Yan leaned down, whispering with a wide grin, "Brother Lu, did you see that? The Ice Fairy of the Chu Clan actually smiled at you! In three years at this academy, no man has ever received three words from her, let alone a smile!"

Lu Chen chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Brother Kuang, a smile will not stop Murong Ba’s blades. Let us return to the Eastern Pavilion. The storm has only just begun."

Across the valley, news of the Autumn Assessment spread through Border Cloud City like wildfire.

In the grand hall of the Murong Clan manor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly bleak. Heavy porcelain cups lay shattered across the mahogany floor, and the air was thick with the scent of blood and medicinal herbs. Murong Feng lay pale on a bed, his broken meridians bound in spirit bandages.

Sitting upon the patriarch's throne was Murong Ba. At forty-five years old, with broad shoulders, iron-grey hair, and a face carved from granite, he radiated the suffocating aura of a Ninth Layer Qi Condensation powerhouse. In his hands, he held the three shattered pieces of the Frost-Biting Sword.

"A seventeen-year-old orphan... with two bare fingers?" Murong Ba’s voice was dangerously low, rumbling like distant thunder in the hall.

"Patriarch, it is the truth!" Murong Hai knelt below, his forehead touching the floor. "The boy hid his strength for three years. He awakened a Flawless Heaven-Grade Meridian and mastered lost sword intent. Elder Tie and Chu Qingxuan openly protected him on the stage. If we do not eradicate him now, he will become our clan's executioner!"

Murong Ba crushed one of the sword fragments into fine steel dust with his bare palm. His eyes burned with icy, ruthless determination.

"An unbacked prodigy is merely a ripe fruit waiting to be plucked," Murong Ba growled, his gaze turning toward the dark window overlooking the academy peaks. "Canglan Academy can protect him inside their gates, but the Black Wind Mountain trial begins in seven days. Send word to the Blood Wolf Mercenaries outside the city."

Murong Ba's lips peeled back in a savage sneer.

"Make sure that seventeen-year-old dragon never returns from the mountain."
