A turn around
The news outlets had juicy news about the Brown family, Henry Miller and his lovely wife, Layla Miller.
They were expecting a baby and it was making the headlines.
Scarlet was doing her hair in the hair salon when she heard a group of ladies discussing that and her heart tore apart.
She had woken up two days ago to discover that Kai had run away from their home in the middle of the night.
She was still dealing with the pain of him leaving and wondering what message people would begin to receive.
“What do we do, mother?”
She was heavily perturbed, pacing up and down the living room as they thought of possible places he could have gone to.
“You need to make an official report to the police and make them know you found out for two days but you were hoping that he was only gone for a while.”
“Does that sound plausible, mother?”
“Well, not exactly but it is not looking like we have a lot of options here.”
Scarlet heaved a sigh of exhaustion.
“ When he eventually returns, you can be sure that I will make his life double the hell he has seen here!”
“That is if he is going to return because the maids informed me that he cleared all his things,” Valentina replied with a wry smile. “I hope for his sake that he did not steal things from us.”
“I had that checked earlier, as soon as I noticed he was gone.”
She was sad. Not that she was missing him but because she was worried about what the media would think and how the story could be told.
She did make a.police report stating that he was missing and a reward was attached for anyone who had information about his disappearance.
She was not done dealing with that, and now, Henry's wife's pregnancy is making the news.
Scarlet sat on the salon chair feeling struck with deep seated jealousy.
Her heart throbbed within her as she pulled out her Phone to call Henry.
His phone rang but he wasn't picking up.
Her frustration rose with immediate effect.
With Layla, talk to you later. Kisses 😘
Scarlet read through the message with pain bugging her heart.
“Are we ever really going to get our happily ever after eventually?” She thought to herself , angrily shutting off her mobile phone.
Her feelings metamorphosed into depression and she suddenly lost interest in getting her nails done.
That evening, Scarlet rolled in her bed restlessly, thinking about her relationship with Henry and her missing husband, Kai.
“How is he surviving? How is he not coming back yet to look for my help or for some money from me?”
She hated feeling helpless and now, she really felt sunk in a state of helplessness with no thoughts on what could be done.
Her cell phone rang and she picked it up. It was Henry.
She was too angry to respond to his calls but had to do it.
“Baby,” he called out to her with his masculine voice. “I am sorry. I was with Layla almost all day.”
“I have seen the news, Henry. She is expecting a baby!” Scarlet yelled at him. “Was this the plan? I thought you said she was never going to have your kids?”
“What? You saw what on the news?” Henry sounded worried. “Calm down babe. I mean, I know I made that promise but I had no idea when this happened. I love you and it is you and I.”
“I find that hard to believe after seeing the spicy pictures of you and your wife all over the media. I am heartbroken!”
Her voice died off in harsh sobs.
“Where are you babe?”
“Where else, my house!” Her voice was haughty and she was angry.
“Do you want to hang out?”
Scarlet was hesitant to reply but Henry pleaded with her and she finally did.
“Fine! I will see you in thirty minutes, the Choral centre restaurant.”
She quickly threw on a pair of jeans and a loose blouse. Her belly was now very protruded and bumpy.
She got into her car and drove herself to the location.
Henry was there as expected and when she got down from her car, he walked up to her and hugged her passionately, taking her lips for a kiss.
He was wearing a hooded polo and he had sunshades on.
“I missed you so badly,” Henry cooed in her ears. “I could take you right now.”
Scarlet giggled, feeling excited that he still wanted her in that form.
“This is a public place, we could be arrested for that.”
Henry gripped her arse and Scarlet giggled once again, leaning into his arm.
“I was really worried about losing you to Layla. I have kept away from the media all these years for your sake.”
They were now seated in the bar.
“Excuse me sir, what would you like to have?” One of the waiters interrupted them.
Scarlet gave the waiter a disdainful look and Henry shook his head, “we are fine. Thank you.”
The waiter nodded and walked away from them.
“What is the plan, Henry? Is there ever going to be an us with Layla expecting a baby?”
Henry gripped her hands and squeezed them lovingly, “we will be together in a while babe. Just give me time to get myself together and gain all that I can from the Millers.”
“But you have said these same words over and over again, babe. I want to be your wife! I hate being hidden.”
She was frustrated and it was etched in her face.
“What do you want me to do then? Send Layla divorce papers?”
His voice was coarse and it mirrored his dissatisfaction with her pushy words.
“Just get whatever you have to do with her already so that we can have the moment we have Always wanted.”
Henry let out a sigh of exhaustion. He was worn out by the conversation but did not want to show her how irritated he was.
“Layla is our ticket to a better life. We have to lay low for a while babe, please.”
His eyes were pleading with her and she couldn't say no to him.
In addition to that, she knew how important the relationship with the Millers was. If she broke them apart, it would tell a lot on their finances and his public affiliations.
He needed the Millers to sustain his position in the society.
“I know what your plans are but I guess I just feel slightly bothered,” she said softly.
“Why?” Henry asked, rubbing her palm lovingly.
Scarlet adjusted on her seat.
“It should have a lot to do with Kai's disappearance. You know what his role was. As long as we remained married, the world would not suspect my relationship with you. Now, the fool is gone!”
“Calm down babe. He isn't gone, he is missing and you have put out a police report. He will be found.”
“You know, before he left, he asked me for a divorce.”
Henry laughed hysterically at Kai's demand.
“If he is gone, isn't that good riddance? You will be fine, just ignore him and move on.”
“I love you ,” she mumbled and Henry placed a finger on her lips.
“I could kiss those curvaceous lips of yours now,” he chuckled and Scarlet giggled.
Henry pulled her in and gave her a kiss.
Both of them got up and tipped the waiter who had come to their table earlier before walking out of the door.
***
Across the state, Kai was in his bedroom, studying all the important details about his father's company.
His phone beeped countless times with messages.
Kai smiled wickedly when he saw the content of the messages.
“Hmm, finally, I have all the evidence I need,” he muttered proudly, looking through the contents of the message received.
Pure Joy was etched on Kai's face for the first time in a long while.
***
Three months had gone by like the wind and Kai was nowhere to be found.
“You cannot tell me that my husband just disappeared like that without saying a word,” Scarlet squealed in the police station. “I am becoming heavily impatient with this case and the way it is being handled.”
“We are doing our very best, Miss Ross. The dynamics of the case makes it difficult to decipher anything.”
Scarlet was frustrated. As much as she wanted to vent her frustration on the police chief, she knew so well that it had nothing to do with him.
“Face the fact, he walked out on you…” her intuition mocked her and she shrugged off the mockery. “But I am fine!” She muttered to herself, loud enough to douse out the noise in her head.
“I think it is best you go home ma'am. We will keep our ears to the ground Incase we hear anything or have new evidence.”
Scarlet left the station feeling slightly weakened by the entire situation. Her greatest fear was people putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
She walked out of the police station and walked to her car.
Once she got in, she saw a beautiful sports car pull up right in front of her.
The car seemed familiar because she had seen it one time with Henry.
“This has to be the Miller chick,” Scarlet whispered, rubbing her steering.
Layla Miller got down from the car, her red floral dress creating beautiful patterns.
Her skin flourished and her baby bump stood out in the day, screaming publicity.
“Henry lied to me ! That bump looks older than mine!”
Scarlet's mind raced with venom as she watched the lady walk gracefully into the supermarket that was beside the police station.
The level of jealousy she has for her was deep seated and cruel.
She hated that Layla seemed to be living the life that she had hoped to be living with Henry.
A few weeks later, Scarlet and Henry are alone in the Ross mansion, catching up on old moments.
Scarlet mentioned that she had seen Layla a few days back and that the bump has grown so much.
“What are you trying to insinuate?” He requested, twitching his lips. “Does it matter how large the bump is?”
“She typically got pregnant before me!” Scarlet slammed her hands on his chest, feeling sad.
“Stop it babe. Do you think I would be lying to you?”
Scarlet was sitting on his lap when the door flung open and a man dressed up so nicely and smelling so good walked in.
“Who the hell are you?” Scarlet asked, jumping off from the couch. “How do you just stride into someone's apartment without knocking on their doors first?”
She kept looking at him, her belly rising and falling rhythmically with her chest.
Henry too stood up and walked up to her, standing beside her protectively.
The man ignored them and pulled out an envelope from a file he had and dropped it on the floor.
“There, those are our divorce papers, sign them as soon as possible and fax them back to me. My address is right there in the envelope.
”
It was then that Scarlet and Henry could figure out who it was.
“Kai?” she called out, gazing at him with disdain in her eyes.
He looked so good and so different that she barely recognized him.

Kai’s heart thudded like a caged bird as he stepped into the marble-floored foyer of the Mitchell estate—a place he hadn’t seen in years. He could almost hear the ghostly echoes of childhood footsteps. Yet, today wasn’t about memories—it was about reclaiming a future. In the hushed quiet of the corridor, Kai’s footsteps faltered. His mind raced with questions he’d long avoided: Could a man so broken ever find a place among titans? Would his father’s towering shadow now provide shelter, or simply remind him of all that he had lost? He paused at a heavy oak door, its surface etched with the delicate filigree of a bygone era. His hand trembled before he knocked, a faint, cadenced knock that sounded far louder than he heard. The door creaked open, revealing James Mitchell standing there. "Today's a new start, Kai," James announced the moment they stepped into a sparsely furnished training room. The room was more theater than gym—naked walls, frayed mats, and some equipment that had better days behind it. But it felt purposeful.Kai rocked back, knotted tension inside his belly. "I'm still that cowering kid," he admitted softly, his words raspy with emotion. "Every punch I take, every step I take—it still throbs like I'm there by myself."James nodded, his expression solemn but gentle. "It's not about forgetting the past, son. It's about applying it. "Kai, may I have a minute?" a gentle voice asked as lights above hummed in harmony. Kai's breath quickened and he stopped at a bend in the mansion's less-traveled hallway. "Who is this?" he answered back, his own voice whisper-thin and guarded, all in spite of the whirlpool of emotions buried beneath his peaceful façade.A lean, tall figure emerged out of the shadows—a woman, young and with eyes that darted nervously but shone with unspoken truths. "Did you hear what Madame Tilda whispered this morning?" Mark, the veteran butler, whispered as he stepped in close to Rosa, a timid maid, by the kitchen door."I did," Rosa whispered. "Kai, are you sure you want to do this?" Marcus breathed quietly as they slipped through the side door of the mansion. The air inside was thick with murmured secrets and suppressed tension. Meridian has provided the financial core of Ross's business for much too long. If we manage to scupper this deal, it'll be the first big crack in their hold.""Right," said Marcus, "and I've made arrangements through our insider sources. Layla promised me that several key files and emails that prove fraudulent transactions are in position. They are kept on Meridian's secure servers."Kai’s eyes narrowed, and his tone grew firm, “This coup is the culmination of everything—the long nights spent piecing together evidence, every whispered secret from disillusioned insiders. Layla's insider evidence is the key.".There was a pause before Kai answered, "That's the kind of truth we're looking for. If we can attack them where their money is being tampered with and their transactions sealed by fraud, we may finally crack their operation wide open."."Ah yes indeed," Marcus stated. The emails which were meant to be flawless now have errors, and the board members are already questioning the decisions I have made.""Are you referring to the previous quarterly report?" Clarissa asked softly, worry on her face."Just exactly," Scarlett shot back, her fists bunching into tight fists, "I published the forecast and—ugh—there were errors. It wasn't an error.
