Hospital Roof

A twin-turbine black stealth helicopter cut through the storm clouds, descending over Saint Mary’s Hospital.

Downwash from the spinning blades whipped rain across the gravel rooftop. The landing skids touched down with a metallic scrape, and Caleb jumped onto the roof before the rotors even began to slow.

Behind him, Marcus Vance and four Apex tactical operatives moved in tight formation, suppressed pistols drawn.

Caleb shoved through the heavy metal fire door leading to the tenth-floor intensive care wing.

The hallway was dead silent.

Too silent.

The fluorescent lights flickered erratically. At the nursing station, two registered nurses slumped across the counter, unconscious, with zip-ties binding their wrists. Further down the corridor, the door to Room 1004—the private suite Caleb had funded with his wife’s meager contract allowances for three long years—hung open.

Caleb’s footsteps made no sound against the linoleum floor.

Inside the room, two men in gray surgical scrubs stood over the bed. Neither of them held medical instruments. One had his hand wrapped around the central ventilator power cable, while the other held a clear syringe filled with an opaque, milky fluid.

On the bed lay a frail, pale young woman, her face half-hidden beneath an oxygen mask, eyes closed, monitors beeping faintly beside her.

"Do it fast," the man with the syringe whispered. "Young Master Hayes said make it look like sudden cardiac arrest. Once this beggar's sister is dead, he won't have any reason to hold out."

"Pulling the line now," the second man replied, gripping the plug.

"Touch that cable," a voice cut through the hum of the machines, "and you will swallow your own hands."

Both men froze.

They spun around. In the doorway stood Caleb, drenched in rain, water dripping from his dark hair onto the white floor. His eyes were completely void of emotion.

The man with the syringe reacted first. He dropped the needle, pulled a snub-nosed revolver from under his scrubs, and aimed directly at Caleb’s chest.

He never managed to pull the trigger.

Caleb closed the eight-foot gap in a blur. His hand struck the man’s wrist like an iron hammer.

Crack.

The bones in the man's forearm snapped in half. The gun fell into Caleb's waiting palm. Without breaking stride, Caleb jammed the cold steel barrel into the second man’s mouth, shoving him hard against the wall.

The drywall cracked behind the man's skull. He whimpered in pure terror, his eyes bulging as he stared down the dark barrel of his partner's gun.

"Who sent you?" Caleb asked, his tone level, devoid of anger.

The first man was rolling on the floor, clutching his broken arm in silent agony. The man against the wall trembled violently, saliva and blood dribbling down the metal in his mouth.

"H-H... Hayes..." the man choked out through the steel. "Trenton Hayes... gave us... two hundred grand..."

"Marcus," Caleb said quietly.

Marcus stepped into the room, stepping over the man on the floor. "Lord Vance."

"Take them to the sub-basement. Squeeze out every contact, every offshore account, and every dirty asset Hayes Logistics owns. Then hand them over to the federal bureau."

"Understood, sir," Marcus answered. He grabbed both men by their collars and dragged them out of the room like discarded trash.

Caleb turned back toward the hospital bed.

The heart monitor let out its rhythmic, rhythmic pulse. The pale woman lay completely still under the white sheets.

For three years, Caleb had endured the Sterling family's insults, eaten their table scraps, and accepted every drop of mockery purely to keep the hospital bills paid for this room. This was the vow he made to his master: endure total obscurity until his sister’s condition could be stabilized.

Caleb stepped up to the bedside. He reached down and took the young woman’s limp wrist, pressing his thumb against her meridian pulse to check her vitality.

His brow furrowed.

Caleb’s eyes narrowed instantly. He leaned closer, inspecting the girl’s earlobe and the line of her jaw under the fluorescent light.

There was no small birthmark beneath the left ear.

His fingers slid to the pulse point again. The inner pulse flow was smooth and healthy—completely different from the shattered internal meridians his sister had suffered when she was abducted fifteen years ago.

Footsteps approached rapidly from the hall.

An elderly man with silver hair and a crisp medical coat walked in, flanked by two armed Apex guards. It was Dr. Chen, the premier medical grandmaster of the Apex Consortium, flown in via private jet from the capital.

"Lord Vance," Dr. Chen bowed deeply, breathless from the stairs. "I came as soon as your unsealing signal reached the capital."

"Dr. Chen," Caleb said, his voice unusually low. "Look at this patient."

Dr. Chen stepped forward, took a magnifying penlight from his pocket, and gently pulled down the woman’s lower eyelid. Then he checked the back of her neck, scraping a tiny trace of skin-colored prosthetic wax with his fingernail.

Dr. Chen’s breath hitched. He turned to Caleb, his old eyes wide with disbelief.

"My Lord... this woman is not Miss Liviana."

The room seemed to drop below freezing.

"Speak," Caleb commanded.

"This is a professional decoy," Dr. Chen stammered, pulling back the sheet to reveal a faded tattoo on the woman’s shoulder—a coiled black viper. "She was surgically altered years ago. Her vitals are kept artificially suppressed with mild sedatives to mimic a deep coma. Someone switched your sister out before you even married into the Sterling family!"

Caleb stood entirely still.

The three years of humiliation, the contract marriage, the daily insults he endured to keep this room paid—it was all built on an elaborate lie.

Before Caleb could speak, his burner phone buzzed against his chest.

It was an unknown, encrypted caller ID.

Caleb clicked answer and pressed it to his ear.

A distorted, mocking female voice came through the receiver:

"Did you enjoy playing house for three years, Caleb Vance? If you want to see your real sister alive, be at the Dragon Gate Arena tomorrow night. Come alone... or Liviana dies."
