The porcelain shattered across the floor.

Caleb Vance did not flinch. He looked down at the broken green stone with his worn shoes.

"Trash," Julian Sterling laughed. "You brought a fifty-dollar rock to Grandmother’s seventieth birthday? You really have no shame, Caleb."

Laughter spread through the ballroom. The guests looked at Caleb like he was a circus animal.

For three years, Caleb had been the live-in son-in-law of the Sterling family. He washed their floors, cooked their food, and took their insults. The whole city called him a useless freeloader.

Caleb knelt down quietly and picked up the broken pieces.

It wasn't a cheap rock. It was mutton-fat imperial jade from his family’s northern vault. It was worth more than the entire hotel. But these people only saw ordinary stone.

"Julian, stop it," a sharp voice said.

Vivian Sterling stepped forward. Her green dress looked expensive, but her hands were shaking. Her company, Sterling Cosmetics, was going broke. Tonight was her last chance to beg the family elders for help.

"Stop?" Julian sneered. "Vivian, your beggar husband is humiliating us. He shouldn't even be in the same room as Grandmother."

Old Madam Sterling sat at the head table with her gold cane. She did not even look at Caleb.

"Vivian," the old woman said coldly. "You married this stray three years ago to claim your grandfather's money. Today, that contract ends. And so does my patience."

Before Vivian could speak, the doors banged open.

Trenton Hayes walked in, surrounded by bodyguards. He was the heir to Hayes Logistics, the biggest shipping firm in the city.

"Old Madam Sterling, sorry I'm late," Trenton said with a wide smile.

He snapped his fingers. A guard opened a black box. Inside was a diamond watch.

"Two million dollars," Trenton announced. "A small gift from the Hayes family."

Old Madam Sterling smiled warmly. "Young Master Hayes is too generous."

Trenton turned his eyes to Vivian. Then he looked down at Caleb, who was still kneeling on the floor.

Trenton laughed. "It's sad to see a woman like Vivian tied to a stray dog."

Vivian frowned. "Mr. Hayes, this is a family party. Keep to business."

"This is business," Trenton said.

He pulled a folded paper from his suit and tossed it on the table.

"I bought your bank debt this afternoon. Sterling Cosmetics owes forty million dollars tomorrow at noon. When you can't pay, I take your company."

Vivian’s face went white. "That's impossible. The loan isn't due yet—"

"I own the bank now," Trenton cut in. "I decide when it's due. But there is a way out. Sign this divorce paper right now. Dump this beggar. Marry me. If you do, I will forgive the entire debt."

"Sign it, Vivian!" Julian shouted. "Save the family!"

"Yes, sign it!" the relatives yelled.

Vivian looked around the room. Her family only stared back with cold eyes. No one cared about her. They only cared about money.

She looked down at Caleb.

Caleb put the last piece of jade into his pocket. His face did not change. His heart rate did not speed up.

Trenton took two steps and stood right over Caleb.

"Still picking up trash, little husband?" Trenton whispered.

Then, Trenton lifted his designer shoe and slammed it down onto Caleb’s right hand.

He ground his heel into Caleb's knuckles against the hard floor.

Vivian gasped. "Trenton, stop!"

"Why?" Trenton laughed, putting all his weight on Caleb's hand. "Look at him, Vivian. He won't even bark. A real man would fight back. But this coward? He's just a stepping stone."

Sharp pain shot up Caleb’s arm, but he did not make a sound.

His eyes were locked on his cheap digital watch.

The screen showed: 11:59:45 PM.

Fifteen seconds left.

For three years, his master’s oath had sealed his strength, his billions, and his true identity as the head of the Apex Consortium. The rule was simple: absolute silence and total obedience for three years.

Ten seconds.

Trenton leaned down to Caleb's ear. "Bark like a dog, Caleb. Bark three times, and maybe I'll give you bus fare before I take your wife tonight."

Five seconds.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

The watch beeped softly: 12:00:00 AM.

Caleb lifted his head. His dull, lifeless eyes turned ice-cold.

Under Trenton's shoe, the hand did not break.

Instead, Caleb's fingers slowly wrapped around Trenton’s ankle.
