Faye stepped out of the station, heels clicking on the pavement, heart still hammering. Her phone trembled in her palm as she debated dialing Yemin again.

But he hadn’t come out.

Why didn’t he call? Why didn’t he stop them?

A part of her felt sick for leaving him there. Another part whispered—he told me not to worry. But still, guilt gnawed at her.

What kind of woman abandons someone who just got arrested trying to protect her?

She sighed and hailed a cab, forcing herself toward the party. The entire city’s business circle would be there. Backing out now would be social suicide—and Faye Langford couldn’t afford that.

The hotel ballroom glittered like a diamond mine—crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and rich men shaking hands with fake smiles. Katherine Shaw stood at the center, all eyes on her, a smug smile carved into her flawless face.

James Franx leaned against her, his voice loud enough to be heard across the dance floor.

“Ladies and gentlemen! Some of you might’ve met a certain Yemin Morgan earlier today.”

He laughed cruelly.

“Turns out he’s not some mysterious VIP. He’s just a car thief. Got himself arrested in a stolen Chevy on the way to my girlfriend’s birthday!”

The crowd gasped. Laughter followed.

“Imagine the nerve!” Katherine added, eyes sparkling with venom. “He even had the audacity to act like a somebody. My God—he was nothing but a parasite clinging to Faye.”

Faye stiffened at the entrance. Her eyes scanned the crowd, watching the poison pour from their mouths like champagne.

She took a deep breath and walked in, trying to pretend she hadn’t heard. But it was too late.

A woman in a red dress whispered loudly to her friend, “Isn’t that the girl who was with the thief?”

Someone else muttered, “She probably helped him steal the damn car.”

Katherine’s voice turned syrup-sweet as she spotted her.

“Faye! Glad you made it. Did they let your friend make a phone call yet, or is he still crying in lock-up?”

Faye clenched her fists.

“I don’t know what happened,” she said stiffly. “Yemin said it was his car.”

James laughed like she’d told a joke.

“Oh, sure. And I’m the president. Sweetheart, he probably borrowed that car from a tow yard.”

Katherine tilted her head. “Wait… you’re not still defending him, are you?”

All eyes were on her now. Faye felt like she was being shoved onto a ledge with no way down.

If I defend him now… I’ll be labeled his accomplice. If I stay quiet, I’m spineless.

“I…” Faye faltered, then forced a cold breath. “I don’t know where he got the car from. I wasn’t involved.”

Katherine’s smile widened, satisfied.

“Smart girl. Better to distance yourself from garbage before it stains you.”

Coward.

The word echoed in Faye’s mind louder than Katherine’s gloating. But she said nothing. She couldn’t afford to lose her future over someone who may already be broken.

Back at the station, the police chief stood with his head bowed low in front of Yemin, hands shaking.

“Chairman Morgan, I swear on my badge—if I knew you were being held here, this would never have happened.”

Yemin didn’t speak. He simply stared.

The silence stretched until it burned.

The chief turned toward the captain—the same man who had mocked, shoved, and nearly beat Yemin to death.

“Do it,” Yemin said flatly.

The chief didn’t hesitate.

SLAP!

The captain reeled from the blow, eyes wide in shock.

“You piece of trash!” the chief roared. “You laid your hands on Chairman Morgan? Do you want to dig your own grave?! Apologize!”

“I—I didn’t know—” the captain stammered, but the chief cut him off.

“I don’t care if you were blind and deaf! You’re going to escort Chairman Morgan to that damn party and make sure he arrives safely. And if he so much as chips a nail, I’ll make sure you’re guarding trash bins by tomorrow.”

Yemin adjusted his watch, expression unreadable.

“I’m done playing games,” he said coldly. “Let’s go.”

The captain nodded silently, swallowing the last of his pride. Every step behind Yemin felt like walking into a firing squad.

Yemin Ravollor stood motionless in his living room, the evening sun casting long shadows across the imported marble floors of their penthouse. You think we don’t know you're just putting on a show?"She shook her head in mock pity, her voice dripping with disdain. "Pathetic. Despite being a man who commanded respect in boardrooms across the country, his demeanor instantly transformed to one of deference. His eyes, normally sharp and commanding, now held a mixture of reverence and careful restraint."Chairman Ravol," the CEO said, his voice softer than when addressing his own board members. He bowed his head slightly—a gesture he rarely offered to anyone. It’s one thing to get thrown out of a restaurant, but now you’re just making up ridiculous stories?"The others around them laughed, their amusement laced with ridicule and disdain."Even if you somehow got inside, what makes you think they’d invite you to their table?" one of James’s associates sneered. "What are you, their personal waiter?"Another snickered. "Maybe they needed someone to clean their shoes before the meal."James smirked. "Honestly, Yemin, I almost feel bad for you." She slapped the officer's hand away as he reached for her."Get your filthy hands off me! "Katherine's invitation isn't genuine. She wants revenge."Faye sighed, looking out at the passing buildings. "I know, but what choice do we have? Peter's hosting it personally. After what happened with Tommy, we can't risk offending him again."Yemin's lips tightened slightly. He knew more than he was letting on, but explaining would accomplish nothing at this point. Some lessons had to be learned through experience."That's a nice car for someone who was supposedly broke just weeks ago," Faye remarked, changing the subject. "I remember giving you rides because you didn't have transportation."A faint smile crossed Yemin's face. "People see what they expect to see."The flash of blue and red lights cut through

"Of all people, my ex-husband decides to ruin the most important night of the year."James lounged on her designer sofa, scrolling through his phone with casual indifference. Peter stood nervously before the Yemin, his earlier aggression completely dissolved into deference. He cleared his throat and glanced around the room, his eyes landing on the "Happy Birthday" banner hanging limply from one wall."Wait, is this a birthday celebration?" Peter asked, his voice unnaturally cordial. His gaze settled on Katherine, who was still clutching James's arm.Katherine nodded hesitantly. "Yes... it's mine," she stammered, utterly confused by the shift in dynamics.Peter's face brightened with an artificial smile. Perfect excuse to get out of here with some dignity intact, he thought, mentally calculating how to extract himself from this humiliating situation without losing more face."Well, this is unfortunate timing," Peter said, spreading his hands apologetically.
