His hand was steady.
That was the strange part. No shaking, no visible rage, just cold clarity spreading through him and settling into his bones like ice forming on a lake.
He walked to the window and looked out at the sprawl of Milano below, the ancient city glittering in the night.
The Duomo rose in the distance, floodlit and magnificent.
The streets wound through the historic center like arteries, pulsing with late night traffic and the glow of trattorias still serving dinner to tourists who didn't know any better than to eat past midnight.
His phone buzzed in his hand.
A notification. X. Jasper Doom posted something new.
Kevin's thumb hovered over the screen for a moment before he opened it.
The photo had been taken from a high angle, clearly a selfie.
Jasper held the phone with one hand while lying in the hospital bed, his face tilted just slightly toward the camera.
He looked fragile, his skin pale against the white sheets, dark circles under his eyes that made him seem younger and more vulnerable. But his expression was the worst part.
His eyes were soft, almost glassy with what could have been tears or gratitude or both, and his mouth curved in the smallest, gentlest smile.
Not a grin. Nothing obvious. Just a subtle upturn of his lips that radiated quiet contentment, like he'd just received the greatest gift in the world.
Sarah stood beside the bed in the background, slightly out of focus but unmistakable in her cream coat.
She was leaning over him, adjusting his IV line, her face angled down toward him with such open concern.
The angle made it look intimate, like a tender moment between two people who understood each other completely.
The caption read: "Didn't want to worry anyone, but ended up in hospital tonight. Tried to tell her not to come, that it could wait until tomorrow, but she insisted. Even left her honeymoon suite to be here. I don't deserve a friend like this. Hope her husband can forgive me for borrowing her tonight. Sorry for the trouble."
No exclamation marks. No dramatic language. Just simple, humble words that sounded so genuine, so apologetic, that anyone reading them would think Jasper was the victim here.
The kind, selfless employee who hated being a burden. And Sarah, the saint who sacrificed her wedding night out of pure compassion.
The post already had two thousand likes. Four hundred comments pouring in.
"You're so lucky to have her."
"What an amazing woman."
"Sarah's husband should be proud to have such a caring wife."
"Real friendship right here."
"Hope you feel better soon, you deserve someone who cares this much."
And scattered among them, the subtler ones that made Kevin's blood run cold.
"She left her wedding night for you? That's dedication."
"Her husband is a lucky man to have such a kind wife... hope he appreciates her."
"Some bonds go deeper than marriage I guess."
Kevin set the phone down on the marble table.
Three years. He'd given this woman three years of his life, hidden who he really was and what he'd built with his own blood and will.
He'd played the role of the soft supportive partner because she'd asked him to be patient, to give her time, to understand that her career had to come first and that their intimacy would happen when she was ready.
And on their wedding night, the one night that was supposed to belong only to them, she'd chosen Jasper Doom.
A smile crossed Kevin's face. It didn't reach his eyes or touch the cold spreading through his chest like frost across glass.
What kind of groom decided to divorce on his wedding night? What kind of love story ended before it even began?
The thought should have been painful. Should have felt like failure, like throwing away three years of investment and hope.
And it did hurt. It hurt like hell, a dull ache spreading through his chest that made breathing feel like work. But the decision was made, and there was no going back now. .
He crossed to the closet and pulled out the small black suitcase he'd brought but never unpacked.
Inside, beneath a false bottom, sat a locked metal box.
The password was muscle memory. Three years since he'd last opened it, but his fingers remembered the combination like they remembered how to make a fist.
Inside lay a sleek encrypted wrist device, all black composite material and sealed circuits that looked like they belonged in a spy film.
He pressed the power button and watched it come to life with a soft blue glow that lit up his face in the darkened room.
He entered the twelve digit code. The screen unlocked. One contact. No name, just a designation: Command.
He dialed.
It rang once.
"War God." The voice on the other end was sharp and immediate, almost vibrating with barely contained energy. "We've been waiting for this call."
"Prepare a divorce contract," Kevin said, and his voice was calm, empty of everything except cold instruction. "Standard terms. No fault. Clean separation of assets. I'll meet you to pick it up."
"Consider it done, sir. Anything else you need?"
"Status report on the Temple."
"All divisions are operational and awaiting your return. Seven active contracts are in progress, three pending negotiations, and twelve governments requesting a formal audience. The northern territories are specifically asking when you'll resume direct command of operations."
"Soon."
"How soon, sir?"
"Very soon. Keep this conversation classified. No one outside the inner circle learns I've made contact. Understood?"
"Perfectly understood, War God. Welcome back, sir."
Kevin ended the call. Powered down the device and looked around the honeymoon suite one last time.
Rose petals on the floor, champagne is growing warmer, and the sheets were still rumpled from where Sarah had been beneath him just an hour ago.
None of it mattered anymore.
He changed into street clothes, packed the device back into the suitcase, and walked out.
The hotel lobby was nearly empty. A few late-night staff members who didn't look up as he passed. Outside, the night air was cool and clean after the perfumed warmth of the suite.
A taxi pulled up in front of him. "Where to?" the driver asked.
Kevin gave him the address of the small apartment he'd shared with Sarah before the wedding.

Chapter 36: Kevin's back?
"Jasper, wait."He stopped at the door, one hand on the handle, his back still turned to her. Sarah could see the tension in his shoulders, the slight tremor in his fingers, the posture of a man bracing himself for one more rejection."Come sit down." Her voice was softer now, tired. "Let's talk about how to make this work."Jasper turned slowly. The hope on his face was so careful, so fragile, that Sarah felt a pang of guilt for doubting him at all. He lowered himself back into the chair and waited."I'll give you access to the arms department," Sarah said. "But I need you to promise me three things. First, if anything feels wrong physically, you stop. No exceptions. Second, you report every major decision to me directly before you act on it. And third, you don't overwork yourself. No late nights. No skipping meals. No being a hero.""I promise." His voice was thick with gratitude. "All three. Every single one. I won't let you down, Sarah.""I know you won't." She managed a small smi
Chapter 35: Best Victim
He paused, his eyes dropping to the floor. "And now he's gone and left the military reports unfinished, knowing the acceptance conference is two weeks away. Knowing the contracts are worth hundreds of millions. Knowing you'd be the one left holding everything together." He shook his head slowly. "It makes me sad, Sarah. It really does. That someone would let their pride become more important than the woman they're supposed to love."Every sentence was a carefully placed stone in a path leading Sarah further from Kevin and closer to Jasper. Each word painted Kevin as selfish and irresponsible while Jasper glowed with forgiveness and selflessness.Sarah's expression softened. "Don't overthink it, Jasper. None of this is on you. Just focus on recovering and getting your strength back.""I'm trying." He smiled weakly. "But it's hard to rest when I know you're drowning."The warmth in his voice loosened something tight in Sarah's chest. She felt her mood shift, the heavy cloud of the past
Chapter 34: Kevin's fault
"I'm dedicated. There's a difference." His smile was warm and easy, the smile of a man who understood her in ways that Kevin apparently couldn't.Sarah shook her head, but the tension in her shoulders loosened. Having Jasper here, calm and reasonable and healthy enough to joke, made the suffocating weight of the past three days feel slightly less crushing.Jasper's eyes drifted to the computer monitor. He read the email on screen, his expression shifting to thoughtful concern. "The weapons acceptance conference? That's coming up fast. Have the quality inspection reports been prepared yet?"Sarah's jaw tightened. "No.""Isn't that usually Kevin's responsibility? The coordination, the technical reports, all of it?""Yes.""And he still hasn't come back?"Sarah pressed her lips together. The admission felt like swallowing glass. "No. He hasn't called. Hasn't messaged. Nothing.""So the reports haven't been started at all?""No, Jasper. They haven't been started because the only person wh
Chapter 33: Replacement
From an angle Sarah couldn't see, the side of his face turned away from her against the pillow, Jasper's mouth curved into a slow, satisfied smile. His eyes, hidden from her view, were sharp and clear and nothing at all like the eyes of a man who had nearly died. The injuries were real, the pain was real, but neither was anywhere near as severe as the performance suggested.Sarah noticed none of it. She adjusted his blanket, checked his IV drip, and began asking the nurse about his medication schedule with the focused concern of a woman who had completely forgotten that her own husband might be bleeding to death somewhere across the city.Three days passed.Sarah sat in her office at Sterling Corporation, the morning light falling across a desk covered in military correspondence. An email glowed on her monitor, formal language stamped with military insignia, informing her of the upcoming weapons acceptance conference. She was required to prepare quality inspection reports for every ba
Chapter 32: The cold shoulder
Sarah stood in the hospital corridor holding the dead phone against her ear for a long time after Kevin hung up. His words echoed inside her skull. Did you ask whether I was injured? The question sat in her chest like a splinter she couldn't reach. For a brief moment, doubt crept in. What if Kevin was telling the truth? What if Jasper had been the one to push first? What if the traffic cameras and dashcam footage would tell a different story from the one she'd accepted without question? She should investigate. Should pull the footage. Should at least consider the possibility that she'd made a mistake.A weak groan came from inside the hospital room.Sarah turned. Through the glass panel in the door, she saw Jasper's eyes flutter open on the hospital bed. His face was swollen and purple. Bandages wrapped around his torso. His left leg hung in a cast suspended from a metal frame above the bed. He looked broken and fragile and barely alive. The doubt vanished like smoke. She pushed open
Chapter 31: Restart
"No.""Kevin...""I said no. This isn't a battlefield problem. It's a personal one, and I'll handle it my way."His phone rang.Sarah.Kevin stared at the screen. Quentina glanced at it, then at him, her expression making it clear exactly what she thought he should do with the phone and where Sarah could put her call.It rang five times. Six. Seven. Kevin let it ring. On the ninth ring, something cold and tired made him press accept."Kevin, where are you?" Sarah's voice came through tight and clipped, not worried, not relieved, just angry. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"He said nothing."Jasper is in surgery right now. Three broken ribs. Multiple internal organs bleeding. His left leg is fractured in two places. The doctors said if the ambulance had been five minutes later, he could have died. Died, Kevin. Because of you."Kevin closed his eyes. The taste of blood was still in his mouth."You need to come to the hospital right now and apologize to him the moment he wakes up
