The clock tower loomed above the industrial district like a skeletal finger pointing at the sky.

Midnight. Exactly on time.

I approached the rusted iron door, the obsidian key warm against my chest. Every instinct screamed that this was a trap. Sera Vance worked for Alexander. She was the enemy.

But Gus was dead. And she was my only lead.

The door swung open before I could touch it.

"Right on time." Sera stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by flickering candlelight. "I appreciate punctuality."

"Where's your backup?"

"Don't have any." She stepped aside. "Come in. Or don't. I don't care either way."

I entered the tower.

The interior was empty. No furniture. No electronics. Just cold stone walls and a spiral staircase climbing into darkness. A single table sat in the center of the room, holding two glasses of whiskey.

"Drink?" Sera offered.

"I don't trust you."

"Smart." She picked up one glass and took a long sip. "It's not poisoned. If I wanted you dead, I would have just let Alexander's men find you."

I didn't touch the other glass. "You said you wanted to help me. Why?"

Sera set the glass down. Her eyes were hard, calculating. "Because Alexander is a problem. A growing problem. He's destabilizing the Order. Making enemies. Taking risks that put all of us in danger."

"So you want him gone."

"I want him managed. Controlled. The Obsidian Order has stood for a thousand years because we operate from the shadows. We influence. We don't conquer." She stepped closer. "Alexander wants to conquer. And that makes him a threat to everything I've built."

I studied her face. There was no deception there. Just cold, ruthless pragmatism.

"You're using me."

"Of course I'm using you." Her smile was thin. "Just like you're using me. We both want Alexander dead. We both want the vault beneath the throne. The difference is that I know how to get it."

"Then tell me."

Sera walked to the staircase. "The vault isn't a place. It's a state of being. A connection to the ancient power that the Blackwood family once commanded."

"The Sigil."

"The Sigil is just a key. A tool. The real power lies in the bloodline itself. Your bloodline." She turned to face me. "The Obsidian Throne isn't a seat. It's a network. A web of loyalists bound to the Blackwood name by ancient pacts."

"Gus mentioned something like that. Observers."

"Observers. Guardians. Servants. They're scattered across the world, waiting for the true heir to claim his birthright." Sera's eyes glittered. "But they've been dormant for thirty years. Sleeping. Hidden. Alexander has been hunting them down one by one."

I felt the key pulse against my chest. "How do I wake them?"

"You prove yourself worthy." She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, black folder. "Here. Inside is the location of a man named Killian Reed. He was your father's most trusted Observer. He went underground when Alexander took power. He's the only one who knows the full extent of the network."

I took the folder. "Why are you giving me this?"

"Because I need you to succeed." Her face was unreadable. "And because Killian is the key to everything. Find him. Wake him. And he'll show you how to reclaim your throne."

---

I left the clock tower with the folder burning a hole in my pocket.

The night air was cold. My breath formed clouds as I walked through the empty streets. My mind raced with questions.

Why was Sera helping me? What did she really want?

And could I trust her?

I found a bench in a small park and opened the folder. Killian Reed's file was thin. A photo of an old man with white hair and kind eyes. An address in a small town three hours north. A list of aliases and safe houses.

But something else caught my eye.

A handwritten note at the bottom.

*Killian knows the truth about your mother's death. Ask him about the night she made her deal.*

I read the line three times.

My mother's death. The deal she made to save me. The sacrifice that had kept me alive for thirty years.

I never knew her. I never even saw a photo. Gus had told me she was brave. Selfless. That she gave her life so I could live.

But what if there was more to the story?

---

I walked back to the safe house I'd been using since Gus died.

It was a small apartment above a laundromat. Cramped. Dirty. But it was safe.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the obsidian key.

"Show me," I whispered. "Show me the truth."

The key pulsed. Warmth spread through my fingers and up my arm. For a moment, I felt a connection to something vast and ancient. A web of power that stretched across the entire world.

And in that moment, I understood.

The vault wasn't just a treasury. It wasn't just a place. It was the heart of the Obsidian Order itself. A network of power that connected the Blackwood bloodline to a thousand years of secret history.

And Alexander had corrupted it. Twisted it. Used it for his own ends.

I could feel the corruption. The disease that had spread through the Order like a cancer.

It had to be cleansed.

And only I could do it.

---

My phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

*Killian Reed was found dead this morning. House fire. Alexander's men are getting closer.*

I stared at the screen.

Dead. My only lead was dead.

I threw the phone against the wall. It shattered into pieces.

Rage burned through me. Hot. Uncontrollable. The key pulsed in response, feeding on my anger.

"Not yet," I growled. "I'm not done yet."

I picked up the folder. Scanned it again. There had to be something else. Something I missed.

And then I saw it.

Tucked inside the back cover was a second photo. A woman. Young. Beautiful. With the same sharp jaw and cold eyes as me.

My mother.

And on the back, written in her handwriting:

*Kaelen. When you're ready, find the woman who wears the silver ring. She will lead you to the truth.*

The silver ring.

I had no idea what that meant. But I had no other leads.

I stood up. Packed my bag. Took the obsidian key and held it tight.

"Okay," I said to myself. "One more step. One more chance."

I walked to the door. Paused.

The phone buzzed again. A new number. A new text.

*You're making a mistake, Blackwood. Sera is playing you. She always plays everyone.*

*Don't trust her.*

*Trust no one.*

I looked at the message for a long moment. Then I deleted it.

There was only one person I could trust now.

Myself.

The night was young. The hunt was just beginning. And somewhere out there, a woman with a silver ring was waiting for me.

I walked out the door into the darkness, leaving the burning apartment behind me. The key pulsed against my chest, guiding me forward.

I would find the truth. I would find the vault. And I would make Alexander pay for everything he'd taken from me.

My name was Kaelen Blackwood. And I was coming for my throne.

The mountain road was treacherous. Hairpin turns. Steep drops. No guardrails.I drove the rusted pickup slowly, headlights cutting through the fog. The keys beneath my skin pulsed with each mile, guiding me forward like a compass pointing home. The cabin appeared at dawn.It was small. Wooden. Smoke rising from a stone chimney. Nestled in a clearing surrounded by ancient pines. Exactly the kind of place where nobody would think to look for a fugitive prince.I killed the engine. "I was starting to think you'd gotten yourself killed."She was older than her photo. White hair pulled back in a simple braid. Kind eyes lined with laughter and grief. The kind of place where people came to forget their problems or create new ones.I walked in as Viktor Ross. The disguise was simple. A fake beard. Dark contacts. A scar painted on my cheek. Old leather jacket that smelled like cigarettes and cheap whiskey. I moved with a swagger I didn't feel, projecting confidence I didn't have. The bar was half-empty. A few drunks nursed their beers. • The Escape from Below

Drake moved like a predator. He grabbed my arm and yanked me toward a wall of ancient symbols. His hand pressed against a carved stone, and the wall slid open, revealing a narrow passage."Through here. Now."I didn't argue. I dove into the darkness just as the first gunshots echoed from the staircase above. The passage was tight. Cold stone pressed against my shoulders on both sides. I could hear Drake behind me, his breathing steady and controlled."Keep moving," he growled. "They know the layout. They'll have men waiting at the other end.""How do you know?""Because I used to work for Alexander."I stopped."Keep moving!" Drake shoved me forward."You worked for Alexander?" I kept running, but my mind was racing. "That's how you know everything? You were one of them?""I was. Until he killed my brother." Drake's voice was flat. "Now I'm your best chance at survival. • The First Observer

The white light faded slowly, leaving behind a world that wasn't quite right.I stood in a vast chamber. Stone walls. High ceilings. Torches flickered in iron brackets, casting dancing shadows across ancient symbols carved into every surface. The air was cold and still, heavy with the weight of centuries. My keys were gone.I looked down at my hands. The obsidian fragments had merged. Melted into my skin. I could feel them pulsing beneath the surface, alive and waiting."Welcome, Kaelen Blackwood."The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. Deep. Ancient. Resonant.I turned slowly. A figure stood at the center of the chamber. Tall. Cloaked in shadows. Its face was hidden, but its eyes burned with pale blue light."Who are you?""I am the first Observer. The one who bound himself to your bloodline a thousand years ago." The figure raised a hand.
