“Halt! What are you doing here?” A man whose shoulders were squared high, standing guard at the wooden gate of a small, secluded manor on the edge of town, barked sharply.

His hand was already resting on the hilt of his curved blade, his eyes narrowing at the figure approaching.

Torchlight flickered against the rough stone walls of the gatehouse, casting long shadows across the cobbled path.

“It’s me, Daku. I have some crucial information for Elder Sato,” Daku said, his voice calm but his tone edged with urgency.

Two guards stood before him, their postures stiff and suspicious.

Before they could react further, the faint scrape of leather boots sounded behind Daku.

Someone emerged silently from the darkness — the man who had been tailing him all this time.

The spy gave the faintest nod toward the guards, an unspoken signal that the boy had indeed come under his watch.
