Four Hundred Twelve

The nearest changed panel belonged to someone with six fingers on each hand and a face Jace's interface refused to classify as human.

The chamber still offered the same inventory fields it had given everyone else.

SUBJECT 244 — INDEXED

Bloodline Value: Unclassified.

Stability: Stable.

Usefulness: Retained.

Projected Charge Yield: 0.4 units/hour.

Estimated Remaining Term: 1,100 years.

"Eleven hundred years," Seraphina said.

"That isn't a lifespan," Jace replied. "That's a supply contract."

Farther down, the dates stopped agreeing with any calendar the System admitted existed. One chamber displayed symbols that would not translate, then offered an approximate conversion placing its index date four thousand years before anyone thought to build a subway beneath Manhattan.

VAULT LORE — CODEX ENTRY UNLOCKED

Human indexing represents the most recent expansion of an existing system.

Prior Species Identified: 9.

Origin Eras: Non-Contiguous.

Earth Inclusion Status: RECENT.

"We're not the first," Jace said. "We're the newest inventory."

"Nine species," Seraphina said. "Someone kept every one of them breathing long enough to be useful, then went looking for a tenth."

The conduits beneath the chambers pulsed.

CHARGE-YIELD METER — VAULT AGGREGATE

Active Yield Sources: 211.

Current Output: 84.4 Charge/hour.

Dormant Reserve: 198 subjects.

Unstable Sources: 3.

Total Output Since Activation: UNRESOLVABLE AT CURRENT ACCESS.

Uninterrupted Operation: CONFIRMED.

"Previous readout counted ambient extraction," Caleb said. "Only 211 feed the active route."

"This has been running under the city the entire time," Seraphina said. "While people went to work. While my family bought ships."

Jace had not meant the thought as an accusation, but she received it like one anyway. Seraphina stared at the pale current and seemed to follow it upward through every ship, barrier, and family title she had once trusted. She did not ask to be excused for not knowing.

Neither of them tried to make the thought gentler.

Theodore stood silently three chambers behind them, watching.

"It is still preservation," he said.

Jace turned. "You said you couldn't say that anymore."

"I said I could not call the extraction a byproduct. Three hundred and seven healthy subjects make that a lie." His voice remained level, which somehow made the admission heavier. "But every person here is alive. If containment fails, many die. No one in this room gets to discard that because the other truth is uglier."

"I'm not discarding it. This is a basement full of prisoners that happens to keep them breathing. Both parts are true. Only one gets used as a defense."

"It is a constraint, not a defense. If you open every chamber tonight, people die tonight. Sunchain built the mechanism that trapped them, but your decision would still be the final action."

"And leaving them here keeps them batteries."

"Yes," Theodore said. "That is the shape of it."

Elijah had moved to the far wall while they argued. He opened record after record, stripping the chamber summaries into separate layers.

"They're divided," he said.

"The records?" Jace asked.

"The people."

Breach Sight followed Elijah's hand into the vault architecture.

BREACH SIGHT — STRUCTURAL READ

Record Layers: Body / Name / Memory / Bloodline / Yield.

Body Layer: ACTIVE.

Name Layer: SEALED — ALL SUBJECTS.

Memory Layer: SEALED — ALL SUBJECTS.

Yield Layer: ACTIVE.

Breach Sight Proficiency: 16% → 21%.

Elijah looked at the rows rather than anyone standing near him. "You don't need a person's name removed to keep their heart beating. You only need it gone if you want the heart to stop belonging to someone."

Caleb stopped working on Chamber 401.

He did not contradict him.

"I spent eleven years believing what happened to me was a side effect," Elijah continued. "A cost attached to being saved. Something regrettable." His hand shook once over the sealed name layer. "It is a design feature. They did not take my name because recovery required it. They took it because a person with a name is harder to file."

Theodore said nothing.

Elijah kept his hand near the sealed layer. The missing name no longer looked like damage done only to him. It looked standardized, a clean administrative step repeated because the vault worked better when nobody inside could answer who was being used.

Jace let the silence remain. Elijah had earned a room in which nobody hurried to translate his pain into policy.

The System opened a new panel.

ETHICAL QUEST — THE HUMAN ASSET LAYER

Assume administrative authority over 412 indexed subjects?

Grants: Chamber Control. Charge Redirection. Release Authorization.

Requirement: Register all subjects under claimant identity.

Legal Effect: Registered subjects become claimed property.

Accept / Decline

"There it is," Seraphina said. "The same trap in a larger room."

"The chain offered to own me," Jace said. "This offers to let me own four hundred and twelve people and calls that rescue."

"Can you release them without accepting?"

"No."

"With it?"

"Yes. They would wake up belonging to someone again."

Jace read both options again, searching for the concealed third line. Nothing appeared. The System understood ownership and abandonment, rescue purchased through possession or suffering preserved without permission. It had no field for helping someone who never became yours.

He selected the only answer he could live with.

DECLINE.

QUEST RESOLUTION — OWNERSHIP REFUSED

Discovery Overflow Experience: 54,000 → 57,500.

Human Asset Layer Authority: UNCLAIMED.

Alternative Resolution Path: UNDETECTED.

Nothing else improved. Health remained 108/420. Stamina remained 0/160. Charge remained 34/140. Corruption stayed at 89%. The failing-chamber clock continued counting while the System rewarded him for keeping his hands clean.

UNSTABLE CHAMBER TIMER: 00:19:06.

Refusal had saved nobody. It had only prevented him from becoming the next person authorized to call ownership protection, and Jace was beginning to understand that moral cleanliness was another resource a crisis could exhaust.

He started back toward Caleb and the failing chambers.

A panel that had remained dark on the way in lit when he passed.

HIDDEN QUEST SIGNAL DETECTED.

Target: Unnamed Indexed Heir.

Immediate Reward: NONE.

Completion Requirement: Subject must be freed without claimant registration.

The chamber label changed.

COMPATIBLE CLAIMANT DETECTED.
