The names were the first thing missing.

Four hundred and twelve chambers glowed around Jace, each prepared to explain the value of the person inside and none willing to explain who that person was. Bloodline. Stability. Usefulness. Yield. The vault knew exactly how long a body could produce and apparently considered everything else decorative.

Jace walked because standing still felt too much like accepting the inventory. Seraphina stayed beside him, one hand locked around his arm, and neither mentioned that she was holding him up now more than holding him back.

SUBJECT 047 — INDEXED

Bloodline Value: Moderate.

Stability: Stable.

Usefulness: Retained.

Projected Charge Yield: 0.4 units/hour.

Estimated Remaining Term: 140 years.

“A hundred and forty years,” Seraphina said, reading it twice.

“That isn’t a sentence,” Jace said. “It’s a lifespan projection. They aren’t counting how long he’s imprisoned. They’re counting how long he’ll keep producing.”

He moved farther down the row and stopped at Subject 053.

The person inside was small. Not small the way an adult can be small. Small the way someone is before they finish becoming one.

SUBJECT 053 — INDEXED

Bloodline Value: High.

Stability: Stable.

Usefulness: Retained.

Projected Charge Yield: 0.4 units/hour.

Estimated Remaining Term: 190 years.

“Theodore,” Jace said.

“I see it.”

“Say preservation again.”

Theodore did not. He stopped a full pace short of the chamber, close enough to read the panel and not close enough to see the face beneath it.

Elijah stood four chambers back, staring at a girl who could not have been more than nine. His hands had gone still in a way louder than shaking.

“She’s stable,” he said. “That’s what makes it worse. She isn’t dying. She wasn’t dying when they put her here. Nothing in her needed interrupting.”

“That is not knowable from the current chamber data,” Caleb said.

“It’s on the panel.” Elijah’s voice never rose. “Stable. Not degrading. Not critical. Read it and tell me which part describes someone at the point of failure.”

Caleb read it. He remained quiet a fraction too long.

“Subject 053 may have been indexed under another protocol.”

“That isn’t a correction,” Elijah said. “That’s a larger admission wearing a smaller coat.”

INDIVIDUAL SCAN — SUBJECT 053

Condition at Index: Healthy.

Instability Detected: None.

Index Justification: Bloodline Value.

The frost around the girl’s face thinned as the scan completed. She looked asleep except for the perfect stillness of her eyelids and the thin line carrying pale Charge from the base of her chamber into the floor.

“She wasn’t recovered,” Jace said. “She was collected.”

“That is one chamber,” Caleb replied, and even he seemed to hear how little protection the sentence offered.

“Then check another,” Seraphina said. “You keep telling us the records are exhaustive.”

Elijah started walking.

He did not stop after one scan. His hand opened panel after panel, faster than his expression could change, until a line of cold gold followed him down the wall. Healthy adults. Stable adolescents. Children entered under bloodline-priority orders. Every new result took something from the preservation argument without giving Elijah anything useful back.

AGGREGATE SCAN — 412 SUBJECTS

Condition at Index — Critical: 61.

Condition at Index — Degrading: 44.

Condition at Index — Healthy: 307.

Three hundred and seven.

The number remained on the wall without apology.

Jace watched Elijah absorb the number and understood that this was not the moment he learned Sunchain lied. Elijah had already known that in pieces: the missing name, the cold room, the careful kindness afterward. This was the moment those pieces stopped being private damage and became architecture. Four hundred and twelve chambers stood around him proving that what happened to him had not been an exception, a mistake, or even a particularly cruel recovery. It had been a method, repeated until the method looked old enough to call itself necessary. And methods did not apologize when one subject remembered.

“Say it now,” Elijah said, turning toward Theodore. “Say extraction is a byproduct. I’ll listen. I’ve listened for eleven years, and I never once made you finish the sentence.”

Theodore looked at the total.

“I can’t,” he said.

It was not a large sentence. It changed the room anyway.

Caleb’s head lifted sharply. “That is a statement against House interest.”

“Yes.”

“I am obligated to record it.”

“I know what you are obligated to do,” Theodore said. “I’ve watched you do it for six years without asking whether the thing being recorded deserved to become official.”

Caleb held the report open above his palm.

Then he closed it.

HOUSE SUNCHAIN REPORT STATUS

Required Dissent Entry: WITHHELD.

Internal Compliance: COMPROMISED.

He turned toward the unstable chambers as though nothing had happened. Jace understood he had just watched Caleb choose something for the first time in a career built around eliminating choices.

UNSTABLE CHAMBER WARNING

Chambers 388, 401, 409: Containment failing.

Estimated Time to Breach: 00:22:00.

Subject Survival Without Containment: Unknown.

“I can slow two,” Caleb said. “Not three. The third requires claimant authority I do not possess, and Command will not grant it before arrival.”

“And if I had it?”

“Then the decision would belong to you instead of nobody.” Caleb moved between the failing readouts. “I am not certain that is an improvement.”

Jace looked down a room where three hundred and seven healthy people had been filed as inventory, where a child had one hundred ninety productive years listed beneath her face, and felt the exhaustion of understanding the problem completely while having zero Stamina and twenty-two minutes to touch any part of it.

Farther down the vault, the panels changed.

Not the values. The categories.

Species fields returned symbols his interface could not translate. Dates ran backward beyond every calendar the System admitted existed. Origin records named worlds, cities, and eras that had been gone long enough for history to forget they had ever needed names.
