The voice stayed in the chamber after it finished speaking.

The seal remained closed, one unbroken meter of stone insisting nothing inside had moved. The System had no panel for a warning delivered through an intact barrier, so for once it offered none.

“Did everyone hear that,” Jace said, “or am I finally getting the hallucinations I was promised?”

“I heard it,” Seraphina said.

“We all heard it,” Theodore confirmed.

Elijah said nothing. He had moved three steps closer to the seal without appearing to decide to, and his hand had left his wrist for the first time all night.

The door opened the way old machines open: without ceremony, one section sliding inside another until there was suddenly space where there had only been stone. Cold rolled over them, dry enough to sting Jace’s eyes.

SUNCHAIN VAULT — QUEST UPDATE

Stage One: Establish access to the sealed structure — COMPLETE.

Stage Two: Identify the active yield source.

External Indexing Risk: ACTIVE.

Jace crossed the threshold before the System could recommend who should own it.

Lights rose inside the vault, and he stopped.

The chamber extended farther than the Spire was wide. Clear-fronted compartments lined both walls from floor to ceiling, frost silvering their edges, and every one held a person.

Not bodies. People. Chests rose slowly behind the glass, all on the same measured rhythm, too even for sleep and too present for death.

VAULT INVENTORY — ACTIVE

Indexed Heirs: 412.

Active Yield Sources: 211.

Dormant Yield Sources: 198.

Unstable / Do Not Disturb: 3.

“Four hundred and twelve,” Seraphina said quietly, as if the number might hear her.

The room kept going after Jace’s eyes wanted it to stop. Maintenance aisles cut between the stacked chambers. Thin tubes ran from each compartment into the floor, carrying pale light toward a central channel. Every few seconds it pulsed, and two hundred eleven separate breaths answered without waking.

The nearest chamber held a woman in clothing Jace did not recognize, hands folded over her stomach, face slack in a way that suggested someone else had arranged it. Frost traced the conduit pattern around her head.

“They’re alive,” Jace said.

“Yes,” Theodore replied.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Guess.”

“I would rather not.”

“You knew rooms like this existed.”

“Not this room.” Theodore’s voice flattened. “Sunchain vaults hold materials, contracts, claim anchors. They do not hold four hundred living heirs beneath an unregistered city foundation.”

Caleb moved toward the three chambers marked unstable, gold diagnostics opening over his palm before he reached them.

ENVIRONMENTAL DRAIN RATE

Extraction: 0.4 Charge per active subject per hour.

Active Aggregate Yield: 84.4 Charge per hour.

Dormant Reserve: 198 subjects.

Destination: Untraceable from current position.

Jace read the numbers twice and understood exactly what the room was for. A prison was built to hold people. This place held them because keeping them alive made the taking last longer, one measured fraction at a time.

The knowledge sat differently from the projection upstairs. That had been a future designed to frighten him. This was infrastructure: maintained, scheduled, ordinary. Somewhere above, noble barriers held because people down here had been prevented from finishing either their lives or their deaths. Jace had spent the night refusing to become an asset. Now he stood inside the reason the word existed.

“That’s where their Charge comes from,” he said.

Nobody corrected him.

“Ships,” Seraphina said. “Palaces. Claims. My house’s anchors.”

“Harvested,” Jace said.

She touched the nearest chamber, then pulled her hand away as if the glass had burned her.

“Preserved,” Theodore said.

The word landed like something dropped in a quiet room.

“Say that again,” Jace said. “Slower.”

“These heirs would be dead without containment,” Theodore answered, and he did not sound like a man quoting policy. He sounded like a man who had needed the sentence to be true. “Untreated bloodline instability can kill within days. Recovery interrupts that failure. Charge extraction is a byproduct of continued preservation, not its purpose.”

“You believe that.”

“I have believed it for eleven years.” He looked down the rows. “I have never stood inside the room while saying it.”

Caleb stopped beside a darkened chamber. “Containment degradation confirmed. Three units are unstable. If they fail, the subjects fail with them.”

“Then open them.”

“Opening them ends preservation. Their original conditions would resume from the point of interruption.”

“So they’re alive enough to produce and too dead to release.”

“That is crude,” Caleb said. “It is not inaccurate.”

Elijah reached the nearest chamber and placed both hands against the glass.

Elijah’s reflection lay over the sleeping woman’s face, older than the memory in his voice and less certain than his uniform. He stayed close enough for his breath to cloud the glass, as if leaving first would repeat something he had survived only because he could no longer remember all of it.

When he spoke, his voice sounded younger, stripped of the careful flatness Sunchain had spent years installing. “I was in one of these.”

Everyone turned.

“Not this vault. One like it.” He kept his palms against the frost. “I remember the cold. I remember waiting long enough that time stopped being useful. I thought someone would come.”

“Someone did,” Theodore said.

“You did.” Elijah finally looked at him. “Then I couldn’t remember my name, and everyone said that meant recovery was working.”

“Elijah—”

“You said it kindly. I never thought you were lying.” His fingers curled against the glass. “That isn’t the part that keeps me awake.”

The chamber brightened beneath his touch.

SUBJECT 001 — INDEXED

Bloodline Value: High.

Stability: Degrading.

Usefulness: Retained.

Projected Charge Yield: 0.4 units/hour.

Estimated Remaining Term: 61 years.

Then every chamber in the vault lit at once.

The room had found a way to inventory breathing.

Four hundred and twelve living people received the same four labels, and not one of them received a name.
