Don’t Let Them Index You

The stairwell narrowed around Jace before his eyes adjusted to the dark.

Brick gave way to something older, cut in a pattern too regular to be natural and too rough for Sunchain. Seraphina kept his weight against her shoulder while he felt for each step with his good foot. Twice the stone shifted beneath him. Twice her hand tightened before either of them acknowledged how close he had come to falling.

ASSISTED DESCENT ACTIVE

Movement Efficiency: 31%.

Stamina: 0/160.

“Still planning on not falling?” she asked.

“Working theory.”

CONDUIT SCAN — IN PROGRESS

Detected: Power Routing. Signal Routing. Unknown Routing.

Three systems lay over one another like sediment, and only two had functions the System could name.

“That isn’t subway wiring,” Seraphina said, indicating a dark cable threaded through hand-cut brackets along the wall.

“No. It’s older than the subway. Probably older than the Spire.”

“Older than Sunchain.”

“Older than whoever taught Sunchain how to build.”

She traced the air above one bracket without touching it. “My house claims its foundations go back farther than anyone can verify. I thought that was a boast.”

“Could be a warning nobody translated.”

The passage bent beneath a rusted transit support, crossed a service tunnel filled with dead rails, then sank through an arch carved from black stone. Modern vibration hummed overhead. The buried conduits answered below, carrying a slower pulse in the same direction.

CONDUIT LAYER CORRELATION

Manhattan Transit Alignment: 97%.

Original Infrastructure Coverage: 41% mapped.

Unexplored Network: 59%.

The tunnel opened into a chamber too large for the throat leading to it. Dormant conduit covered the walls in looping patterns, gold long since gone dark. The design repeated around the room and converged at the far wall, where every line ended around the outline of a door.

VAULT SEAL ANALYSIS

Seal Integrity: 100%.

Breach History: NONE.

Classification: Pre-System Infrastructure.

Access Method: UNKNOWN.

“It’s sealed,” Jace said. “Not collapsed. Sealed on purpose.”

The System answered with more enthusiasm than his body had left.

BASEMENT DRIVE — CODEX UNLOCKED.

CONDUIT LAYER 7 — MAP AVAILABLE.

QUEST CHAIN INITIATED: SUNCHAIN VAULT.

EXPLORATION REWARD

Overflow Experience: 52,000 → 54,000.

Perception Proficiency Track Unlocked: 8%.

SPIRE DASHBOARD EXPANDED

Dormant Structure Slots: 0 → 1.

New Structure: Spire Sub-Level [Dormant].

The rewards arrived like bills disguised as gifts, each line promising ownership over something nobody had understood five minutes earlier.

Jace watched the new dashboard slot settle into place and felt the particular unease of seeing a room become a resource before anyone had opened it. The System had not asked whether the structure belonged to him, only whether his claim could reach it. That was how ownership kept arriving: first as access, then responsibility, then a sentence explaining that surrendering either would endanger everyone nearby. He had seen enough generous offers tonight to recognize the shape, even when the wrapping changed.

“What does the quest want?” Seraphina asked.

Jace opened it.

SUNCHAIN VAULT — STAGE ONE

Objective: Establish access to the sealed structure.

Suggested Method: Register substructure under claimant authority.

Failure Condition: External faction indexing.

Behavioral Requirement: Assume administrative responsibility for all contents.

“There it is,” Jace said.

“What?”

“The part where finding the door means I’m responsible for whatever is behind it.”

“Can you decline?”

“Probably. Right after Sunchain claims everything first.”

Footsteps sounded in the passage behind them.

Theodore entered the chamber with Caleb close behind. Elijah came last, his hand already at his wrist, as if the room were reaching for something he preferred not to remember.

“You came anyway,” Jace said.

SUNCHAIN RESPONSE ETA: 09:07.

“I bought six additional minutes,” Theodore replied. “Command accepted senior verification before formal indexing.”

“Generous math.”

“I have become fluent in it tonight.”

Caleb moved directly to the seal. Gold readouts formed above his hand, failed to classify the material, and folded back into themselves.

“Registry access denied,” he said.

“By who?” Seraphina asked.

“There is no claimant signature.”

“Then what denied you?”

Caleb tried again. The seal remained dark.

ACCESS REQUEST REJECTED.

Reason: INDEXED AUTHORITY NOT RECOGNIZED.

No one spoke for a moment.

Theodore walked the chamber’s edge, one hand hovering near the dormant lines without touching them. He stopped where the patterns converged.

“I don’t recognize this construction,” he said. “Sunchain does not build like this. No house I have served builds like this.”

“Whoever sealed it didn’t want your kind opening it,” Jace said.

“Possibly.” Theodore studied the door. “Or they expected us to become the kind of people it would refuse.”

That landed harder than Jace expected.

Theodore looked at his own reflection in the dead seal, distorted by grooves older than the city. “Recovery taught me to treat every unknown as something safer after classification. This room is the first unknown I have found that appears safer because we cannot classify it.”

“Does that bother you?”

“Yes.” Theodore’s answer came without delay. “I am trying to determine whether that is fear or recognition.”

Caleb continued searching for a category. For once, the not-knowing sat visibly on him, like a coat tailored for someone else.

Elijah stayed near the entrance, eyes fixed on the door. “It isn’t hostile,” he said.

Caleb looked back. “You cannot verify that.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Elijah’s fingers tightened around his wrist. “The same way I knew this place was old. Something in me remembers being safe from Sunchain before Sunchain taught me safety meant them.”

Nothing about the discovery healed Jace. His hand still shook. Corruption remained at eighty-nine percent. The System had rewarded him for reaching the vault without paying back anything the journey cost, because progression had never promised mercy. It only made the next obligation easier to see.

The seal groaned.

Dust slipped from the ceiling. Every dormant line in the chamber flashed once, a pale color older than gold, then died.

Nobody moved.

A voice came from inside the vault, quiet, clear, and utterly calm.

“Don’t let them index you.”
