“Pathetic beasts!” Ember spat out as she heard the ground shaking violently immediately after Darian’s warning as if the beasts wanted to prove he was right that they were coming as said.

Alden did not relax to even look around despite the terrifying sound of beasts coming closer with each passing second, his eyes were on the wolf he and Ember were attacking to kill.

‘At this point! We need to quickly deal with these two beasts before the real threat arrives,’ there was a hidden panicked look on his face which he refused to allow to reflect on his face.

From the earthquake-like sound that was coming from afar, this time around the beasts were not small. Getting surrounded here when they are still battling against these wolves will put them at a big disadvantage and the risk of being overwhelmed by the enemy's strikes.

‘So this is what the main characters in novels always face. And now it’s me. This is crazy!’

Alden thought as he silently took in a deep breath as he admitted thoughtfully that it was not easy especially now when he was the one in the main character’s shoes and experiencing the problem, something on earth he would never have imagined would happen to him in his lifetime.

The wolf near him with reddish-bloodied eyes jumped in front of him with the intention to pounce on him with its deadly force and finish him off as its prey.

Alden did not allow the beast to do as he pleased, he sprinted forward and slid across the ground, greatly avoiding the dangerous attack that could have cost him his life if he was not careful and thought fast.

While the beast was still mid-air, about to land, Ember’s arrow shot forward like a kite and slammed into the scor-eye wolf’s underbelly.

But only a scratch of the wound could be seen as the arrow could not penetrate an inch into the beast, not even a tiny drop of blood came from the injury to show how ineffective the arrow was against it.

Alden on the ground, quickly jumped up and faced the wolf whose sight was now on Ember for raining arrows upon it and its pack members, targeting her as a threat.

“Ember, quickly, launch another arrow at its forehead,” Alden hurriedly shouted to Ember who already instantly had another arrow prepared to fire off.

Ember did not hesitate and released her grip on the bowstring, allowing the arrow to go forth like a roaring beast.

Alden, at the back of the beast, tried to use a trick by using wind control to boost the arrow just like he did with his dagger to defeat one of the wolves a few minutes ago.

Thinking it was going to work but nothing happened no matter how he focused his attention and mind on the arrow. The wind was blowing up, reacting to his call but strangely enough the arrow of Ember could not be controlled to his will.

“Fuck! Looks like I still need to go deeper into the skills before I can use the skill to take control of another person's attack,” Alden muttered as he concluded.

Crashing into the wolf’s forehead as Ember targeted, the arrow did not pierce through but delayed it for a second or two.

Alden, seeing this, did not hold back anymore.

His body shifted forward by the wind circling around, making him cover the distance between him and the beast in a single second.

He knew the situation they were in, holding back now was not wise thinking, they needed to settle themselves before the other threat parties showed up any moment from now before them.

With his sword in his right hand and one of his daggers in his left hand, Alden forced it down on the wolf from behind.

As if the wolf had an invisible eye at its back, it unexpectedly moved to the side causing Alden to miss his step and stagger to the front of the wolf.

Giving the beast the opportunity to attack him by swiping its claws at him, Alden could not balance himself in time and before he could react to the arriving claw, it was already too late.

The attack struck his chest, ripping his black tight robe and making the five bloody claws of the wolf imprint there. The wound was a little deep, blood began to pour out in no time.

Ouch!

Alden screamed out in pain, his dagger dropping from his hand as he clutched his chest tight, trying to stop the blood flow with his hand.

“No, no, no, no!” Ember nearby yelled in fear as she saw the wolf’s attack catch up with Alden.

She fired another arrow at the wolf to get its attention away from Alden but it was impossible as if the wolf was hell-bent on finishing off Alden.

Saliva dripped down the mouth of the wolf, the fresh scent of Alden's blood empowering it to focus on Alden.

Alden received several bad notifications at once, showing how bad his condition was right now.

“I did not expect that move from the motherfucker,” he said through gritted teeth, trying to bear the unbearable pain.

Ahhh!

He could not stop the painful cry from leaving his mouth, his chest was burning like mad.

“I can't even handle a common Level 1 F-rank wolf for a minute,” Alden hissed to himself. “How can I become stronger this way to fight against more powerful beasts?”

Just as he contemplated on himself, he could hear the faint steps of the beast getting nearer to him.

Alden tried to push himself off the ground, he found it difficult to accomplish.

The wolf was already getting close to him, his instinct kicked in as he swiped his sword at the wolf that was not even near him.

Shockingly, a white light burst out of the sword and the next second hit the wolf, though it did not do much to the beast but pushed it back from taking another step.

Howl!

The wolf screamed in anger, about to rush forward.

And a steel whip wrapped around its body, lifting it up and slamming it heavily against a tree.

Crack!

The sound of crackling was heard all over the place, as an unknown number of the beast’s bones broke inside its body.

The wolf tried to struggle and get up but Zara made her move again and swiftly reached the beast’s side and crushed down with her boot on the wolf's head before it could get up.

The head of the beast burst open, its messy brain spilling on the ground in disgust.

“You should have come earlier in time to finish it off, senior sister,” Ember arrived at her sister’s side and said in a slightly angry voice.

“Then are you guys going to grow in experience without experiencing hardship?” Zara said in her usual cold tone before walking past Ember.

She turned and walked past her, heading toward Alden. As she passed by, she spoke without looking at him. “I saved your life. So now we’re even.”

“Really a weird fellow,” Alden whispered under his breath that only he could hear.

Ember hurriedly ran to Alden's side. When she saw the wound on his chest, cold chills ran down her spine at the horrible sight of it.

“The son of a bitch really did you dirty, huh?” Ember said, trying to sound calm but an iota of shock could still be heard in her voice.

“I guess so,” Alden answered with a weak smile.

“I will start the healing now,” Ember stretched forth her hands on his wound as the whitish light gathered in her hands and began to flow into Alden’s body.

“This is going to take time to heal and we don't have time on our side,” Ember bit her lips in worry, her eyes looking around for the sign of the incoming rushing beasts.

Meanwhile, Darian had just finished off the last wolf.

“We can’t run anymore,” he said seriously.

“We’re already trapped in the middle of the soon-to-come chaos. We’ll have to fight head-on.”

“Brother!” Ember called out. “Alden is badly hurt!”

Darian glanced at Alden’s wound, his eyes carried a concerned look. Then he sighed deeply.

“Ember, just focus on healing him as fast as you can,” he said. “But stay alert. I’ll hold the line with Zara and Storm to buy you time.”

“Zara, it’s high time you cast that nonchalant side of yours away and seriously battle the soon-arriving scumbags,” Darian looked at Zara who stood at the side with her whip coiled around her arm, that icy look never leaving her face.

Zara’s icy eyes met his. “You don’t have to tell me what to do. I’m not stupid,” she replied sharply.

And then it happened.

The ground shaking. Louder. Stronger this time.

Out of every corner.

The next wave had arrived.

  • Chapter 20: Trapped

Inside the dark forest, the scary sound of beasts echoed from all directions. Soon, the group was surrounded by dangerous scor-eye wolves circling around them, ready to tear them apart for trespassing into their territory. "Holy crab!" Ember cursed inwardly, but she refused to allow any fear to overtake her heart, knowing fully well that it wasn't going to help matters. Each one of them had already drawn out their weapons, their eyes fixed on the six beasts around them, trying to intimidate them with their numbers. Darian held out his two short swords. "Don't be scared of their numbers," he said directly to Alden and Ember, trying to ease any worries in their hearts. "They are just Level 1 F-rank beasts, so do not fall for their tricks or get trapped among them and also try to finish them off quickly with each of your attacks," he declared, staring at the beasts with a fierce glare. Zara, the quiet one, did nothing but extend her spiked steel whip. She wanted nothing more than t
