CHAPTER 13: At The Gates
Twenty seven days had passed since the roof of the Hollow Spire. Kai stood in the backyard of a small blue house on the west side of the city, the neighborhood he and Kim had grown up in. A new family lived there now. Their laundry hung on a line strung between two oak trees, a radio played old pop songs through an open kitchen window. In the far corner, half hidden by overgrown ivy, sat the rusted frame of a boy's bicycle. He had bought it with his first ever paycheck from the Association, when he was sixteen. His dad had spent three nights after work putting it together in the living room, his fingers covered in grease, yelling when he lost a small screw under the couch. Kai had ridden it up and down the street until the sun came up, Kim running behind him screaming for a turn.He stepped over the low wooden fence, ignoring the bark of the family's small dog behind the porch. He knelt down and ran a finger over the rusted handlebars. The memory hit him all at once, not the blurry fa
CHAPTER 12: Trinity
The van rattled down the dirt highway back toward the city, dawn painting the badlands pale pink behind them. Kim slept curled on Kai's lap, her head pillowed on his good arm, her breath soft against his jacket. Ripley drove with one hand on the wheel, her other arm strapped tight to her chest in a sling Mina had rigged from a strip of old tent canvas. Baylor was passed out in the back row, his broken arm propped on a stack of old blankets, his head lolling against Nix's shoulder. Niko rode shotgun, staring out the windshield at the empty road, his daggers loose in his lap. Mina sat on the bench seat next to Kai, watching him out of the corner of her eye, saying nothing. No one turned on the radio. No one joked. The only sound was the rumble of the engine and the wind whistling through the cracked passenger window.Kai ran his fingers lightly through Kim's messy hair. He could feel the three powers in his chest now, quiet as sleeping things. The Thousand Systems hummed low and familia
CHAPTER 11: The Stone
Tomas moved like he had never moved in the warehouse. The Void had burned away all the slowness, all the hesitation, leaving only sharp, hungry rage. His dagger cut through the wind so fast it whistled. Kai ducked the first strike by a hair, the blade nicking his ear. Blood trickled down his neck. They traded blows fast as lightning across the roof. Kai used Quick Step to dart in and out, copying the Void strength in his fists to match Tomas's. Every strike sent shockwaves rippling through the stone under their feet. Cracks spiderwebbed out from where their fists landed. The low wall around the roof crumbled in chunks, falling a hundred floors to the rocks below.Tomas was not alone up there. Every time Kai landed a solid hit, the big Void charm on the man's chest flared purple, and the damage melted away. His skin knit back together, his bones reset, his cuts closed like they had never been there. He did not tire. He did not slow down. He just kept coming, laughing that same cruel la
CHAPTER 10: On The Roof
The stone stairs creaked under their boots as they climbed. Forty four minutes until sundown. The air grew thinner the higher they went, sharp with cold and the faint metallic tang of old magic. Kim limped at the back, leaning most of her weight on Mina, her face still pale from the collar. She had not said a word since they left the third floor, her eyes fixed on the back of Kai's jacket. They stopped on the seventh floor landing. A heavy iron storage door stood half open, the room behind it stacked with rotting crates and old stone furniture. No windows. No easy way in except the door."You stay here," Kai said to Kim. He dragged a heavy oak shelf in front of the door, leaving only a small gap to slip through. Nix wired a small trip mine to the frame, quiet enough that no one would hear it until it was too late. Niko left a curved dagger on the crate nearest the door, its blade glowing faint silver.Kim crossed her arms. "I am not hiding in a closet while you fight a god on the roof
CHAPTER 9: Ritual Floor
The third floor hit Kai like a physical blow the second he stepped through the archway. The air was thick enough to chew, heavy with the smell of old blood and burnt incense and something else, something sharp and metallic that tasted like pennies at the back of his throat. His vision swam. The system glitched so bad the blue text in his eyes warped into meaningless lines for three full seconds before it stabilized.[VOID DENSITY: 94%][WARNING: EXPOSURE BEYOND RECOMMENDED LIMITS][LORD RESONANCE: 31%]The room was huge, circular, the walls lined with hundreds of stone alcoves cut into the rock. Each one held a body. Men, women, kids, all wearing the tattered remains of hunter uniforms from every era of the last thousand years. Their skin was gray, their eyes closed, their chests not moving. But every single one of them was breathing. Slow, shallow, in perfect sync with each other, like the whole room was one giant sleeping lung.In the center of the floor stood a stone altar, ten fee
CHAPTER 8: Siphon
Park moved faster than a thing that size had any right to. His claws tore through the air inches from Kai's throat before anyone could yell. Ripley lunged between them, her forearms crossed to block the blow. The impact sent her sliding ten feet back, her boots leaving deep gouges in the stone floor. She grunted, blood trickling from a cut above her eye, but did not go down.Kai used Quick Step to circle behind the abomination. He drove his fist into the small of Park's back, hard enough to crack regular bone. Park did not even flinch. He spun, his elbow catching Kai in the side of the head. Kai's vision swam for a second. He tasted copper in his mouth.[VOID INTERFERENCE: TIME REWIND UNSTABLE][USE NOT RECOMMENDED]Kai tried to trigger it anyway. The world flickered, stuttered, then snapped back to the present without moving. Park's fist slammed into his chest, sending him crashing into a stone pillar. Dust rained down on his shoulders. The other three abominations moved in. Jun, Hyo
