CHAPTER EIGHT: Dream
Gilgal returned an hour later, having buried the corpses and set up wards around their temporary camp. There was no water to wash his clothes, so he’d stripped them off, wrapping himself up in a black cloak. Vera had frowned at that. All Knights had a spare, Nur had told her that. And besides, she was sure she’d caught a glimpse of another set folded neatly in Gilgal’s saddlebag. But she soon stopped caring about his state of undress when the first clap of thunder sounded outside. It was so loud and sudden that she couldn’t stifle the yelp that escaped her lips. Gilgal was completely calm, though. He sat cross-legged like a statue except for the steady rhythm of his heartbeat and breath. He’d removed his medallion and gauntlets before stepping into the carriage, and the atmosphere around him steadily grew charged and oppressive. She had no explanation for it except that he was trying to comprehend the nature of lightning using the storm. It was such an outdated concept for young
CHAPTER SEVEN: Meeting the Competition
Vera watched the Purger Knight, Gilgamesh, who’d claimed a spot in Nur Haley’s heart for the better part of a century, and she couldn’t help but feel jealous. Before the romantic relationship between him and Nur, they’d already shared a student-teacher relationship that she herself could never have. Even broken up, the man before her still knew more about Nur Haley than she ever could. But it wasn’t the jealousy that she focused on now, nor the appearance of the man that her father often spoke about in exaltation. It was rather his reaction to her words. She’d only seen him twice before. Once, in the portrait hall back in the Castle, and again in her dreams where he had the golden eyes and spoke words that shook the earth. His reaction to the mention of the golden eyes had been peculiar, to say the least. Then he’d trembled with the next words that came out of her mouth, like it was a taboo he didn’t want to hear. At any other time, she’d discount his reaction as simply bein
CHAPTER SIX: Road to Castle Org
Nearly two days after Gilgal finally left the kingdom of Laos, he paid for passage on the ferry; paying extra for Harvey. After the crossing, he continued on his way through the forests around the kingdom of Nialli for five days before he finally made it unto the dirt and winding roads cutting through the mountain ranges around the Castle. He was only slightly alert, nearly falling asleep on Harvey as the proximity of the Castle lulled him into a sense of security, then he heard the hushed voices before him. Harvey stopped to a mental command, and he dismounted silently. The voices became more discernible as he crept closer to the bend in the road, until he got a view of the action.A band of large men dressed as guards were slowly boxing a woman into a corner. Along the road were horses and a carriage tipped over on its side, with the wheels broken. Chests were already dotting the ground around the carriage, along with pieces of fabric spilling free from opened chests.
CHAPTER FIVE: Yvaine Regina Immortalis
Yvaine Regina Immortalis watched the young man curiously. There was certainly Demon blood in his body, but no trace of Human, nor any of the other lesser inhabitants of the Middle Aether. The other part of his blood was pure, but she’d never come across it before. It was so strong, nearly overshadowing his Demon blood even.Very curious. He looked nothing like his mother, except in the eyes, sporting the same green pupils and heavy eyebrows. But he was beautiful, though. His age wasn’t shown on his body, though she was sure he couldn’t be more than 350 years old. His physical constitution was as perfect as one would expect of a Daemon, and even his magic level was decent, but he was weak. She looked at him again, unconsciously cocking her head as she pondered. Meeting him here was a surprise, and the questions she couldn’t answer about his parentage interested her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t stay to examine him to her heart’s content because they’d be picking up her trail soon.G
CHAPTER FOUR: A Meeting
Gilgal walked away from the burning pile, keeping his distance from the tongues of flame and smoke rising from it. He didn’t bother this time with a kerchief, and neither did anybody else. He suspected their reasons must be similar to his; giving honor to the dead by not rejecting even the last embers of their sacrificed lives. He turned to see Jedaz and the mayor still standing vigil over the burning bodies and wondered if Wharfdale will ever return to her former glory. He knew of course that the mayor had already sent a report of the events to the King, but he also knew that King Rovenard the second of Laos was never one to support what he considered lost causes. And Wharfdale could be described as nothing else now.The guardsmen were all dead, so she was left defenseless. The fishermen were all devoured by the Demon Austinphas, and what remained of them wouldn’t be hauling any nets for the better part of a year. With the war looming, Wharfdale had no chance of making a return, espe
