Cecile burst into laughter beside her.

Susan looked at her friend's face in question before Cecile tried to stop her laugh.

“I am sorry. It’s just…” she turned to Julian with a mocking look. “I have always known you are such a big baby, and an attention-seeker. But this? I will admit I didn’t expect you to sink this low.”

“What is she talking about?” Julian wondered, his gaze intent on her.

Slightly surprised by his cold look, Cecile continued anyway, “Just because Susan is finally getting the kind of man you will never be, you are throwing tantrums? What, you bought a fake stamp to make it look real just to get her attention. What a loser!”

Susan frowned as she looked at the court stamp already on the document close to where Julian had already signed.

Of course, it was fake. She had never heard of any divorce agreement getting stamped before signing.

She couldn’t believe Julian would be so shameless that he would even commit the crime of impersonating a judge.

Earlier, she had even felt bad for how everything turned out and she had stopped her mum from calling him because she would scold him heavily.

Susan thought he left because he felt sad about her engagement, so she had offered to call him instead.

Who knew this was the nonsense he went to do?

“I can’t believe you are trying to drag my family down with you. If the police find out about this, and come for you, you will ruin my day. Or is that your intention anyway?” She narrowed her eyes at him, her tightened hand wrinkling the paper.

He gave her a mocking look. “The police will come for me? I am afraid if the police come for anyone, it will be you. Bigamy is a crime in this country, yet you are not afraid to get engaged to another man while you are still married to me. I suggest you sign that quickly to save yourself and your precious family.”

Guilt pulsed in Susan’s chest, and an uneasy feeling tugged at her.

He had never spoken to her this coldly before. Had she really pushed him too far this time?

She looked down at the papers in her hand. “Could he really bear to…”

“Oh, quit your drama. Just get out of here and go make yourself useful,” Cecile’s taunt cut into Susan’s thoughts.

She shrugged off the impossible thought and glared at Julian. “Stop this nonsense already. I was thinking of compensating you with something for your efforts before. But if you keep up with this, you won’t even get to see my shadow for months. So just get out of here already before I lose my temper.”

She was expecting him to beg. Instead, he gave her a deadpan look and asked, “Are you done? Sign the damn papers and you never have to see me again.”

“Who the hell do you even think you are?” Cecile stepped forward with the aim to slap him.

“Cecile,” Susan called to stop her.

“Look at the time, Susan. This loser wants to delay you so you will get to your own engagement party late. Do you know how bad that would make Mr Anderson look?”

Relief rushed through Susan as she finally understood.

Julian was jealous, but his damn ego wouldn’t let him beg her.

So, he wanted to use this silly game to delay her and make Isaac cancel this arrangement.

Foolish man. He wouldn’t dare to let go of her after all.

She thought with satisfaction.

“So, you want to play this game? Fine. I will play your stupid game and sign the paper. After that, you better quietly go to the venue and do everything mum tells you to.”

She looked around the dresser.

No pen. Great.

“I don’t have a pen here with me. Go and get one.”

She would lock the door after him and…

Her eyes widened as he calmly passed her a pen.

She furiously signed on the line and slapped the paper against his chest.

“Now, get out. Better be careful around me from now on, Julian. Guess what? Your stupid game just gave me the perfect idea. I should just divorce your arse. Putting up with you for five years is enough.”

Now he would beg her, she thought.

Instead, he calmly said, “I want it back.”

“Want what back?” she asked, as she jerked her hand at the paper he was holding already.

Was he losing his mind with jealousy? Serve him right for making her panic just now.

Why did she panic anyway? she wondered in surprise.

“The ring you never wore,” he answered her question.

Susan's perfect brow was slightly marred as she frowned in thought.

“That? I trashed it. You seriously do not think I would hold on to that junk, do you?”

His eyes blazed with anger so hot that Susan stepped back reflexively.

“You threw it away?” he gritted out harshly.

“What? You think Susan would wear the kind of cheap ring a loser like you can afford?” Cecile tossed at him.

“Cheap?” Julian scoffed with his eyes on Susan’s. “You never even opened the box, did you?”

Of course, she hadn’t. The cheap plain box was enough to put Susan off.

After promising him she would wear it later, she had had the maid throw it in the trash right after her grandpa died.

What would she do with a cheap ring when she could have the best, like what Isaac had promised her?

Julian nodded as he saw the answer on her face.

“Good. Enjoy your social climbing, Susan. Try not to break your neck,” Julian said as he tucked the papers back into the envelope.

What did he mean by that? she wondered and snapped at him, “Stop annoying me and go make yourself useful at the venue.”

He turned away without answering her, and something on his face made it seem like she had just done something she would regret.

“Your arrogance is disgusting! I don’t know what gives you the right to act all high and mighty when you’ve got nothing anyway.”

She heard the front door close behind him, and she sagged back onto the stool before the mirror.

She realised she had said those last words to get a rise out of him.

She wanted him to say something. Anything at all that wouldn’t seem so final, like what he said earlier.

She looked at the pen in her hand and threw it at the spot he was standing earlier.

“Let’s get you ready, Susan. Don’t let that big fool ruin your mood for your big day,” Cecile said as she drew the make-up kit closer.

“You are right,” Susan said in a disheartened tone.

Then she set herself to dressing to impress her fiancé.

“If only Julian is as capable as Isaac,” she suddenly thought. “He is more handsome and takes care of me, after all.”

She shrugged off her thoughts, tucking away the unease she had felt about the whole exchange too.

Julian was just throwing a tantrum, she assured herself.

He would crawl back to beg her soon.

Her voice held a hint of excitement as she looked from the last clue in her hand to something on the wall. “I think we found it.”Julian came forward as she pressed on the lever on the wall. True enough, the exit sign blazed at the end of the corridor and the door swung open as they approached.

    Not Again

As they stepped into the narrow corridor beyond the door, the door clanged shut behind them with such a final note that Julian looked back uneasily. Just as he was looking back, he saw a glowing yellow write-up on the wall asking, “Do you dare to escape?” He looked at the woman trudging ahead of him like she was waltzing through the most glamorous halls in Quiset. He briefly wondered if under all that gorgeousness, the heiress was somehow unhinged and was about to involve him in some twisted game. He shrugged off his silly thoughts and was about to call her when they rounded a corner to their left.

He looked at the clock. Five minutes to four.Carlisle had had a permanent scowl on his face since Julian was introduced to all as Henry's assistant. That scowl looked permanently carved on his face now as he glowered at Julian, as if daring him to talk.“I am sorry, Carlisle, but this will have to wait till tomorrow. I finished the last sorting twenty minutes ago, and I fail to believe you just realised you needed this now. My boss says I close by 4pm. Look at the clock, Carlisle, it is four minutes to closing hour. I am not working overtime on my first day,” Julian said with an agreeable smile.“Look here, you dimwit.
