CHAPTER 6: NEW DAY, NEW REALITY.
Jessica was home, fast asleep on the couch in her living room. She felt a touch and was stunned, jerking awake. She looked around to see what touched her.
"Hey, Jess."
"Michael?" she said, squinting her eyes. Yawning, she stretched herself.
"You didn't tell anyone you were leaving, nor were you answering your calls. You had us all worried."
"Like anyone cares," she snorted sluggishly. "That should be the least of anyone's worries right now."
Shrugging aside their concern, she stood up. To her, it was petty. She staggered as she got up, falling back on the couch.
"Whoa! Are you alright?" Michael asked as he rushed to her. She was smitten by a slight migraine, causing her to scrunch her face.
"I'm fine. Just, leave me alone," she said, pushing him off of her as she got up again. But Michael held her nevertheless, supporting her as he saw she was dazed.
"Gosh. You reek of alcohol," Michael noted, but there was no bottle or glass of alcohol lying around that he could see.
"And you reek of a woman's perfume."
"What are you talking about?" Michael chuckled while they walked toward the stairs.
"The fragrance on you isn't mine, nor is it yours. So, whose is it?" Jessica asked, stopping as they were a few steps up the stairs.
"You're drunk, babe. Stop assuming things. And besides, aren't we all just returning from a place where everyone's cologne has a lasting effect? I probably got smeared by one stronger than mine, and yours. So stop letting your mind cook up things that aren't real," Michael responded.
Jessica looked at him keenly, even though she was drunk. She shrugged and they continued up the stairs. The fragrance rang a bell in Jessica's head, but she was way too drunk to figure out whose it was.
Lying her in bed, Michael tucked her in and kissed her on the cheek. She drifted off to sleep almost immediately.
Michael got up and stealthily crept his way out of the bedroom. He reached for his phone in his pocket and dialed a number.
"Meet me at our usual spot, pronto!" He smiled as he ended the call, then he left Jessica's house.
_______________
A gentle gust of wind blew, making the white inner curtain that draped down the glass wall separating the room from the balcony, and also preventing visibility from Peeping Toms, but allowing mild visibility to the occupant of the room, to fly, letting in some air which woke Jack from his slumber.
Lying on the left side where the wind blew in from, he opened his eyes, his hair a bit ruffled. He sat up by the edge of his king-size bed wearing only the pants of his pajamas. He sighed deeply, gaining coordination.
He went ahead to check what the time was on his phone which he kept beside him on the side stool. He found that the alarm went off close to an hour ago without him realizing it did.
"Hmm. I must have slept really deeply," he remarked, sighing. Then he heard a knock on his door. He got up and walked to the door, opening it. He saw that it was a maid.
"Good morning, sir. I-"
The maid was stunned to see him shirtless. His ripped but lean athletic physique caught her off guard. With her mouth gaping, she drank in Jack's physique as lustful thoughts filled her head.
"Are you okay, Miss?" Jack asked.
"Uh, yeah. Yes, sir," she gulped, snapping out of her daze. "I uh, came to inform you that breakfast is ready, sir."
"Okay. Thank you," Jack nodded. She nodded in acknowledgment, then Jack shut the door.
"I guess my consistency with working out really paid off," he remarked, shrugging.
He went ahead to make his bed by himself and took a shower. He got dressed, wearing a new striped ash suit. Looking at himself in the mirror, it was fitting. His physique greatly contributed to that, anyway.
He grabbed a briefcase from his closet and headed out. Taking the stairs down, he met another who greeted him, bowing slightly. He responded appropriately to the greeting, taking the side exit to the outdoor dining area, where he usually had breakfast with his father.
"Good morning, Dad" he greeted, arriving at the table.
"Someone woke up late today."
"Yeah. I also wonder why," Jack replied, sitting down next to his father who was seated at the head of the table.
"Had you not come home right after the inauguration, I'd suspect you spent some time with a girl, and that's why you're this tired. But just being with one girl wouldn't get you to wake up late. Or would it?" Mr Norman asked.
Jack simply chuckled, saying nothing. The maid who came to his room earlier came with another and they served Jack his breakfast. Jack had taken note of her face from the moment they met earlier.
As they left, Jack took a sip of the coffee. It was savory, just the way he liked it.
"So, you're ready for your first day at work?" Mr Norman asked.
"Sure. I was born ready," Jack answered. His father nodded, elated at his enthusiasm.
"My secretary and Chief Operations Officer will help put you through with everything that you need. They are awaiting your arrival. You'll be in great hands," Mr Norman added.
"Alright. Thank you, Dad," Jack responded, munching on some of the French fries and egg.
Not long after, he was done eating, setting down his cutlery. "I best be heading off now."
"Sure. Call me if you need anything."
Jack nodded, accompanied by a mild smile. Then he walked away, taking his briefcase.
He got to where the cars were parked outside and got into one as the guard standing beside it, corporately dressed, opened the door for him, then they drove off, accompanied by a second car with two men.
Arriving at Rosker Group Headquarters, he met a couple folks standing opposite each other at the entrance. It was a welcome party. As the vehicle stopped right at the front entrance, he alighted and walked toward the door amid the people.
They clapped cheerfully for him, but he was cold and seemingly unmoved by their gesture. A woman, wearing a grin approached him bearing a bouquet of flowers.
"Welcome to Rosker Group, Mr Rosker," she said, offering him the bouquet. He received it, but his demeanor remained unchanged.
"I am Genevieve Martinez, the secretary of the former President," she added.
"And I am Kaplan Morgan," a man said as he approached them. "The Chief Operations Officer."
He offered a handshake. Jack looked at him for a bit, analytically.
"Clear your office. You're fired."
The COO chuckled in a nervous and confused manner. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure I got you."
"I'm not repeating myself," Jack replied, coldly. Then he began walking to the door as Kaplan stood frozen and stunned. Jack halted and turned his head to the side.
"Are you showing me in, or what?" he said to Genevieve.
"Sure!" she gulped, then scampered to Jack. She was stunned just as the rest of the welcome party was.
There arose some chattering amongst them. Jack just made a first impression that they would never forget in a hurry.

CHAPTER 26: MOMENT OF TRUTH.Jessica sat in her car, caught in traffic behind a couple of cars as the traffic light turned red at an intersection. It was daytime, but she was living a nightmare. This was the worst day of her life. A bunch of negative thoughts ravaged her mind. Right before her eyes, she watched everything slip out of her hands. They weren't hers to begin with. Overwhelmed with grief, she screamed, slamming her hand against the steering wheel, causing the horn to blare. It startled some of the people who were also caught in traffic. Folks who from the side looked at her, talking amongst themselves."Are you okay, honey?" A woman, up to her mother's age inquired from the side. But Jessica didn't even spare her the courtesy of a look, not even a response. She buried her face between her hands on the steering wheel. Shortly after, there was an eruption of horns honking. "Hey! Move it, will you?" the commuters yelled at Jessica. The traffic light had turned green, but
SAVING THE DAY.

I know you wouldn't want to do anything stupid that would jeopardize your future, now would you?" The girl was in tears as she looked hatefully at the young man, Jack, subdued. A lot of wicked thoughts ran through her head."Hand me the knife," Jack requested with his hand
UNEXPECTED SCENES.
CHAPTER 24: UNEXPECTED SCENES. Jack was home that morning. It was the weekend. So he used the opportunity to kick back and relax. It was quite an eventful week. He was up early as usual, so he went out for a jog, alone. Wearing an Adidas tracksuit, he ran comfortably. His phone was strapped to his arm for effective movement, and he had on his AirPods, listening to his favorite playlist. The neighborhood was quite lonely as most of the neighbors hadn't woken up. It was 7:45 in the morning. Well, not many of the rich folks were given to physical fitness as he was. Most of them start out late after they have turned fifty years of age. Well, not Jack. He was thirty minutes into the jog when he heard his phone ringing. He checked to see the caller ID. Seeing it was his lawyer, he halted and answered the call. "McQueen.""Good morning, Mr Rosker. I hope I didn't wake you up?" McQueen said. "Not at all," Jack replied. "Okay, sir. So, the FTB paid the Seans a visit this morning.""Oh,

He was still a bit drowsy.Wearing just her flip flops, she raced out of the room, her hair still ruffled, as expected of one who had just woken up. "Babe?" Michael called to her as she opened the door but she ignored him, heading down the stairs. He got up and followed her, wondering what was going on."Babe? What's the matter?" he asked from the top of the stairs. Jessica had already grabbed the car keys and was at the door. He knew there was definitely trouble."Jess, wait up, would you?" he called out as he rushed down the stairs. "I don't friggin have time to waste!" she replied and hastened out of the house, slamming the door behind her. Michael stopped in the living room and sighed. "What could be the matter?" he asked himself, pondering for a bit. Jessica got
UNEXPECTED TROUBLE.
CHAPTER 22: UNEXPECTED TROUBLE.Sitting in front of the dressing mirror, Jessica is getting ready for the meeting with the potential buyers of her company. She just finished taking a shower. As she combed her hair, her mind journeyed far. Although she faced the mirror, it wasn't her image that was before her. The angry faces of the miners were all she could see. Their angry voices re-echoed in her head. She couldn't even address the workers. She didn't have the balls to do so. What was she going to say even? She wasn't the one who decided to shortchange them, depriving them of what's theirs. As she drove out, the workers stood in her way, chanting and ranting what they had been chanting all the while they were there. Some of them angrily slammed their hands against her car. Another who stood in front threw his lemonade at her windshield, causing her to cringe and duck. She had the same reaction as she sat before her mirror, unconsciously ducking in fright. Jessica quickly realized

She was exhausted - It had been an eventful evening the previous day as a result of the incident with Samantha's husband. She needed some rest. Michael, on the other hand, had headed out about an hour before this time, leaving Jessica all alone at her penthouse. She binged a romcom after she woke up, barely sleeping for up to three hours. Her mind was not at rest. Ergo the reason she had to distract herself with the marathon episodes of the romcom. Sighing frustratedly, Jessica tossed aside the TV's remote control and got up. She headed to her room and got dressed. She couldn't sit at home. She needed to go to her company. She took the elevator down, got into her car, and drove off. It was already 2:30 pm. About twenty minutes later, she arrived at the company. But she met a sight that caused her to furrow her brow, looking a bit perplexed. "What the hell's going on?" she asked herself a
