Chapter 6

Serenity said with a smile, “What do I need your cousin for? He has a girlfriend. It’s too late now because the papers are signed! Keep it between us and don’t let my sister know. I don’t want her to be sad.”

Jasmine was speechless.

Her best friend sure pulled one heck of a move.

“There are all those Lifetime movies and romance novels about blindly marrying a multi-billionaire. Maybe that’s the case with you too, Seren.”

Smacking her best friend in the head, Serenity remarked with a grin, “I bet you read all the chick lit in the shop. Dream on about marrying a billionaire at first sight. Do you think the place is crawling with billionaires?”

Jasmine rubbed on the bump and sighed as Serenity had a point. Jasmine then asked, “Where’s your husband’s place?”

“Brynfield.”

“Not bad. It’s a good neighborhood and easily accessible. Plus, it’s not far from our shop. Where does your husband work? He must earn a lot of money since he bought a house in Wiltspoon and in an expensive neighborhood like Brynfield. What are his wages like? Do you need help with the mortgage?

“Seren, get your name on the title deed if he wants you to contribute to the mortgage. It’s to protect yourself. Not to jinx it but you won’t get anything when you guys fall out and divorce since it’s a prenuptial property.”

Studying her best friend’s face, Serenity answered, “You sound like my sister. He bought and paid the house in full, so there’s no mortgage. I don’t think it’s nice to put my name on the title deed when I didn’t spend a dime on it.”

Jasmine replied, “It won’t matter if the husband and wife get along.”

It struck Serenity that her brother-in-law bought the family house before marriage. He was also paying the monthly house loan, but the renovation was paid with Liberty’s money. Still, Liberty was not named on the property deed. With her mind harking back to her brother-in-law accusing Liberty of blowing cash, Serenity began to worry about her sister.

She ought to bring it up to her sister one of these days.

Serenity closed the shop at eleven o’clock at night.

Since Jasmine’s home was nearby and a family member was buying her dinner, Serenity told Jasmine to get on home.

Having shut the main door, Serenity took out her keys and walked to her e-bike.

She rode for twenty minutes until she arrived downstairs at her sister’s place. It was only when Serenity parked the bike that she realized she no longer lived there.

Lifting her head, Serenity glanced at the floor her sister was on and found that the lights were out. Although feeling down, Serenity left the family of three to be and rode her e-bike into the night.

It was midnight by the time she reached Brynfield.

She was welcomed by darkness as she pushed the door and entered the house. It did not feel like anyone lived in this space.

Grabbing her pajamas from the suitcase, Serenity took a hot shower and allowed the weariness to rock her to sleep.

Meanwhile, flanked by bodyguards, Zachary walked out of the Wiltspoon Hotel, which was owned by his family. He had just closed a big deal with a major client and arranged for the client to stay in the presidential suite. With his new wife coming into mind, Zachary decided to take a trip home.

“Sir, will it be the estate or the hilltop villa?”

The estate was the Yorks’ family home while the villa on the hill was a property belonging to Zachary. His permanent domicile was the villa, but he would catch up and have dinner with the elders of the family at the estate every now and then.

“To Brynfield.”

Having learned her lesson, Rosalie did not dare drink recklessly anymore. She was terrified of getting drunk and making another catastrophic mistake.Mandy tried to console her. “Just think of it as treating Mr. York to two meals a day, Ms. Lafayette. The blind dates are just a side task. It’s not like he’s actually serious about them anyway.”With River’s status, he did not need blind dates. If he were willing to give women a chance, there would be no shortage of accomplished ladies lining up to marry him.“Even without the blind dates, I’d still have to treat him to meals. I owe him that much.“I don’t know what kind of cursed luck I’ve been having lately. I keep losing to River. No, this weekend, I’m going to visit my astrologer, ask if there’s some way to stop him from screwing me over.”Mandy burst out laughing. “I thought you didn’t believe in all that, Ms. Lafayette? You always say, ‘Fate is in your own hands. If you want something, you have to work for it.’“‘If gods and

“A matchmaker can arrange the meeting, but can’t guarantee a match every time.“It was an honor just having the chance to meet Mr. York today. I never dared to expect he’d be interested in someone like me. I came in with no expectations, so this outcome isn’t surprising at all.”Rosalie glanced at her briefly before returning her focus to the road.“Madeline, you’re still young and just starting your career. Focus on your work first. Gain some achievements. That’ll give you an advantage when it comes to dating or marriage later.“At least you won’t be looked down upon by any potential in-laws.”Madeline agreed. “You’re absolutely right. I’ll concentrate on my career for now. After a few years, once I’ve made some progress, then I’ll think about relationships and marriage. There’s no rush anyway.”“Keep it up. I believe you’ll go far.”“Thank you, Ms. Lafayette. I will.”When they arrived back at the office, Madeline got out of the car first. Instead of heading straight into the

River smiled. “Alright, let’s head back in. You should have a proper meal, and you especially need to eat more. You really have lost weight.”Rosalie ignored him and strode back into the private room first.Seeing Madeline eating calmly, without any trace of awkwardness or sadness, Rosalie quietly sighed in relief.Even though she was the Lafayettes’ eldest daughter and the company’s vice president, meaning Madeline would not dare hold anything against her, she still felt guilty. What kind of matchmaker sets up a blind date only for the guy to ignore the girl and dote on herself instead?Rosalie decided that once Madeline completed a year at the company, she would consider promoting her based on performance.“Madeline, this is La Grande Solville’s signature dish.”She served Madeline a portion with a smile. “Try it.”Madeline thanked her warmly. “I already did, Ms. Lafayette. It’s amazing. No wonder it’s their specialty. Every dish here is incredible.”While the two had been o

Rosalie’s expression darkened.“River! Can you be serious for once?”River said innocently, “I am being serious. I’m not even smiling. Everything I said is true.”Rosalie was momentarily speechless. After a pause, she tried again. “So do you actually want to go on these blind dates or not? If not, I won’t waste time arranging tonight’s blind date, and I’ll cancel this whole month’s blind dates.“Yes, we signed an agreement, and I can’t go back on it, but if you’re the one not cooperating, that’s on you. It wouldn’t be my fault even if I canceled the dates.”River replied, “But I showed up, didn’t I? You arranged a blind date with your employee, and I came. I even brought her flowers. How is that not cooperating?”Rosalie gritted her teeth. “You came, but you didn’t engage. You didn’t even serve her food.“Why did you keep serving me? Do you have any idea how that looks? She probably thinks I’m the one you’re interested in!”River said guilelessly, “But I don’t know Ms. Lejeune

This bastard.River had not changed at all.Even as Rosalie glared at him, he leaned halfway across the table, stretching out a hand to lightly tap her forehead.“Rosalie, you look too serious when you glare. I prefer you smiling.” His tone was infuriatingly fond.Rosalie smacked his hand away and stood abruptly, her expression icy.“River. Come outside with me now. I have something to say to you.”River replied with an innocent smile, “Can’t we talk here?”She ignored him, turning on her heel and striding out.River had no choice but to follow.Madeline had not even gotten the chance to exchange more than two sentences with him the entire time.He had not looked at her once.Watching their retreating figures, she let out a quiet, bitter laugh. Why would the vice president play matchmaker for Mr. York and try to set her up with him?It was painfully obvious that he was into the vice president. Her presence here was just an excuse for a free meal.He had zero interest in h

“Rosalie, did you say something? I couldn’t quite hear you. Maybe you should sit next to me.”River grinned, pulling out the chair beside him in invitation.“It would make it easier to serve you, too.”Rosalie shot him another glare. He just kept smiling.Of course, there was no way she was moving. She was the matchmaker. What kind of image would it give if she sat next to him, letting him dote on her?Instead, she turned to Madeline with a bright smile.“Help yourself, and don’t forget to serve River, too. He’s not picky and he eats anything.“Plus, his cooking is amazing. Those lucky enough to taste it still rave about it.”Rosalie had only heard about this, of course.Given their rivalry, she never had the privilege of sampling River’s culinary skills.People claimed his cooking surpassed five-star chefs.Rosalie thought those people were just kissing River’s ass and refused to believe it, not without proof.Still, as the matchmaker, she had to sell his virtues.“Madel
