[61] The debate 2
The debate began, and Dave started strong, at least on the surface. His voice was smooth, and his points well-rehearsed. He spoke about preserving elite traditions and maintaining the prestige of the institution. He often dropped a subtle dig at scholarship students between the lines, with statements like "Without a set of people, I believe the standard of this academy would be unmatched anywhere in the world." Whenever he talked about lowering standards, Dave's eyes flicked to Jace’s side of the room. At the same time, the elite audience nodded approvingly, almost every one of them agreed with his hinted discriminatory speech. As for the scholarship students, they shifted uncomfortably, because Dave spoke with so much confidence and Charisma that would make anyone agree with him. Even Tristan Coleman nodded his head at intervals. When Dave finished, he took a bow and stepped back from the podium, the elite audience erupted with cheers and applauses, and then finally it was Jace’s

THE NEXT DAYThe morning sun didn’t rise gently over campus, it exploded, flooding every corner with gold as though it wanted to illuminate the sequence of events that was about to unfold. From the moment Jace stepped out of his dorm, all eyes followed him and whispered voices trailed behind, each one was laced with either pity or quiet anticipation. Even Jace himself was slightly tensed, but he tried not to show it.By the time he reached the debate hall, the crowd was already swelling, a thick sea of students, both scholarship and elite, neatly divided between the left and right side of the hall, the seating arrangement wasn't a laid out rule, but everyone subconsciously knew thier places and would rather avoid trouble. On the left, the scholarship students sat in tight clusters, their faces tight with anxiety, some even refused to make eye contact with him at all.On the right, the elite circle, relaxed in their expensive jackets with smirks carved into their expressions like they

Jace made it to the restroom before the lecture hall, peeling off the coffee-soaked shirt and inspecting the burn in the mirror. It wasn’t bad enough to need a nurse, but it was irritating. He splashed cold water over the stain, muttering,“First coffee, who knows, next time they’ll throw gold bricks… at least then I could sell them.”"Hey Jace!" A familiar voice called his attention from behind, and Jace quickly looked into the mirror, recognising the young man from his reflection."Uhm, hi," he answered. It happens to be the same boy that Jace is trying to defend."We meet again it seems," Jace added."No, I was following you." The boy cut in, his tone dripped with sincerity."I'm sorry about what he did to you. That's Dave's brother; they are bullies, all of them.""I guess I've learnt that now," Jace nodded, but the boy interrupted him again."I... I'm trying to beg you... again," he babbled, "It's not too late to back out of the fight now, cancel the debate and apologise to Dav

"Yes mum, I'm fine and no... I'm not causing any trouble in college, don't you trust me?" Jace mumbled with a smirk while speaking with his mom over the phone. He had just returned from the classroom and wanted to take a quick snack before the next class. Normally, he would have done this at the dining lounge, where all students, both scholarship and elite, go for lunch, but he didn’t want to draw any unnecessary attention, and he didn't want to meet with anyone who would offend him."Yes Mom, I'm taking care of myself, it's only been a day since I got here," Jace rolled his eyes,"Don't worry I'll be fine."With that, he ended the call and heaved a sigh of relief."Sheesh... mom," he muttered with a smile. He reached for the refrigerator and took out a can of soda. It's a good thing Jack wasn't in the room, else he'd remind Jace of how he didn't deserve those drinks as a scholarship student."Those fools acting like the world belongs to them," he mumbled, taking his seat on the edge

The class went silent, all eyes staring down at Jace with eyes wide open. His words carried such weight that they pulled down their shoulders even though they were yet to confirm."You?" One of the students asked, breaking the silence and bursting into laughter."I love your confidence, but you don't even stand a chance to apply for it, haha!""Exactly!" Another student chimed in,"I don't even know why that bottle didn't hit you on the face, it should have broken that stupid mouth of yours... return to your seat and stay silent just like that scholarship rag that you are.""Oh?" Jace tilted his head slightly, letting the laughter and insults echo around him without even flinching, while the rich boy who had thrown the bottle was smirking like he’d just won a duel.[ Charisma at 1% activated! ]“Return to my seat?” Jace finally spoke up. His voice was soft but how he said it made the air feel colder and tense. He picked up the bottle and stepped forward slowly, closing the distance un

The next day, Jace sat at the back of the classroom, quietly observing his new classmates. Despite the chaos of the previous day, being assaulted, made a secret acting president, and discovering he now shared a room with Jack, he still showed up early, composed and unreadable. He didn’t speak, nor did he draw attention to himself. Dressed in his usual simple shirt and jeans, there was no presidential glow, no trace of the influence he now held, he looked just like any other student.Around him, gossip and news spread like wildfire, and it was one thing they all talked about.“Did you hear the president officially stepped down?” a girl with glittering earrings whispered excitedly. “He is graduating soon, so the position is open to everyone."“I wonder who’s next?” another chimed in. “It’s got to be one of the seniors. Or maybe Jane, I wonder why she hasn't taken up that role yet, considering that her father owns the school... it would be very easy to get it done."“Ugh. Obviously,” s
